Absolute Hammer Bullets

As anyone used the 172s in a 280ai? With my 6.5 saum shooting 140s well was thinking about seeing about getting these to shoot and use as a dedicated elk rifle. its a 26" carbon bencharmk 1:8. Unfortunately I have a bunch of h1000 and 4831sc but I am hearing too slow for the AHs. it shoots the 143 decent at 3180 and 168 ABLRs well at 2850 so maybe stick with that? was hoping my 6.5 would shoot the 156s why I haven't tried yet not sure its throated long enuff.

I was trying to find the same info before i started my build. It seems noone has played with that combo, even Steve at hammer had no answers. So i ended up building a 7rem mag so i could have a little extra case capacity for the 172's. You should be able to get the 155gr absolutes to around 3,100-3,200 iirc. I think that'd be a good load.

Why do you want to shoot 172s in the AH? Mono bullets you don't need to shoot as heavy as bonded bullets to achieve results. I'd drop down to either 155 AH, or 143 AH and go kill elk. I've killed elk with 145LRX from Barnes and they were extremely effective. 2 steps and dead. If I'm going to shoot heavy 7mm bullets it'll be out of a 28Nos , not out of my 280AI. The 280AI really shines with those loads up to about 160gr, anything over that I'm looking for more horsepower to push those heavies. You'll need to find different powders regardless, neither of those are going to be fast enough for your AH.

For what it’s worth I run the 155 hammer hunter at 3k from a 24 inch tube. Absolutes would probably end up 100-150fps faster, maybe more with your extra barrel length.

Just kicking it around as i already have a good load for the 143 at 3180 and 168 ABLRs but both those loads at 800 are about the same or really close to the 6.5 saum so was just kicking sthing around way different.

Yes 143 at 3180. It’s scooting. That’s in the 280ai. Not 6.5 behind 62 grs h4831sc and 215m primers

man thats screaming but was hoping to get somehting bigger going say 3k or 3100 like the 155 or 172 i see now the 172 may not be the best bet. Steve indicated 4831 may work. I have my 6.5 saum for 140 class bullets was hoping a bigger bullet around 3100 for elk. its a 1:8 and stabilized the 168 LRAB well.

Gotcha. The 155s sound like a good bet. I would be careful of the ablr if you want a tough bullet. My pops shot a broadside caribou with the 7mm 175 ABLRs with a mv of just over 3k. Shots were 250yards. No exits.

Buddy of mine shot a broadside cow elk this year with the 168s in a light loaded 7mag just under 3k. Nowhere near the shoulder. Also no exit. Both animals died. But we are talking 2 very different bullets between the ablr that seem to blow up a bit and a penetrating hammer or other mono

Have you penciled out the BC numbers pros/cons with whatever hypothetical velocity you are thinking? I know when I glanced at the 30cal 178 absolute hammer vs the 181 hammer hunter the BC difference still favored the 181 even if I could push the 178s a couple hundred fps faster.

Funny you mention that as i started doing that and plugging in the 143 HH at 3180 and 155 AH guessed around 3200 and the 168 ABLR at 2850 for my 280ai and 140 berger elite in the 6.5 going 3080-3100 and was shocked the dang 6.5 if I entered correctly in the berger site held its velocity (1800) to 950 the others even way faster was aroun 850-900 i know we are talking two different bullets but I am a huge fan of the bullet dumping its energy into the critter i like a bang flop. De got me thinking maybe just stick with 143 HH or 168 or 155 for elk as tougher bullet and critter and keep my 6.5 for deer and antelope. I dont worry about pass throughs unless its my bow.

I just purchased some hammer bullets. Sounds like the 30 cal is best to stay with hh if larger caliber such as 300 wsm and up.I ordered 257 and sounds like 3700fps with 90 ah’s.

I think you'd be above 3200 with the 155AH. I'll take any mono over a Berger. Too many failures with Bergers for me.
