This is not mine. I was doing some on-line "scouting" for various stuff and it popped up in the search results.
It is a long video of a guys solo moose hunt up here this last fall. Lots of good things to think about when hunting moose, or when planning a hunt.

That was one of the coolest self filmed videos I have ever seen. Thanks... for fueling my moose fever... Ed F

Very cool video. Only made it halfway through so far but noticing a couple things.

1. It rains in Alaska
2. I thought the table and chair was an interesting choice. I get the chair but flying in a table seemed odd.
3. It rains in Alaska
4. Face paint @ 19:30 - Guaranteed to get a monster bull...back to watching
5. It rains in Alaska
6. Also seemed odd that he had a bow and rifle but I guess if he got a chance with his bow then that would be cool.
7. It rains in Alaska
8. An ultralight tarp to throw up as a shelter would be really handy

Thanks for posting it, he got himself an awesome moose!

Edit; I kept thinking about leaving his bull moose all night
I would imagine that a bull moose laying there all night would bone sour really quick, on top of laying all night it probably took him a long time the next day to get to the underside quarter, I can't help but wonder if a good amount of meat wasn't a little tainted.

Anyone think there was any issues with the meat?

Yeah, the concern over bone sour would be a real one on this hunt. It did not appear to be very cool. This fall it was really warm until late in the year. And raining when it should have been snowing up there.

It is a cool video but I also had some concerns on the length of time he left it. He should have been at his last gps point at daybreak, not in camp having breakfast.
I also had some concern on his shooting! Seemed to be kind of a "poke & hope" style.

SLIP System, Brad!

I don't know what I would have done without mine up there in 2011 (rained 7 days straight)! And, it doubles as a decoy!

That was my first thought as well. Was it an epic adventure he'll never forget, sure, but there's no question that there was some spoilage involved, and to me, that made this an irresponsible endeavor. If you can't take care of the meat on your own, you shouldn't do the hunt on your own, and a moose that time of year needs at least two people it would seem.

I went this year to Alaska and shot a bull moose. The one thing that stuck in my head was when he said " no way I can pack one 2 miles to camp" That is so true! Other than that I have no problem with anything he did. You just have to be there! This is good enough to be on a TV series like " Dropped " This guy is a stud to do it alone and I am surprised anyone would drop him alone! A bull moose is big animal even a small one! To be able to tanker it down into quarters makes a bull elk look small! That guy gets all of my Kudos not for just doing it Solo but being able to get it back for pick-up! Best Video of a moose hunt I have ever seen! Bob.

And if he lost most of the meat, which is likely considering he took TWO DAYS to break it down, does your opinion change? If we don't do everything within our power to save the meat, then we're no better than poachers.

Bob, comparing the massive size of a moose compared to an elk is exactly why I wondered about the meat, I usually do everything I can not to leave an elk overnight but it has happened to me and I ended up with a little sourness around the bone in the back quarters and that was only a skinny 80 lb elk quarter. When I hopefully kill a moose next year I want the meat to be perfect.

One other thing I am taking away from this video is that I will without a doubt use restraint on what shot I will take if given the chance next Sept.

a couple of things he did makes me question him, only because I constantly think about what I will do when an opportunity presents itself.

1) the day before he took a shot at a running moose and missed (so he thinks).
2) did not wait after the shot, he kept pushing the moose instead of letting it die
3) shot all his ammo at the moose and still did not kill it
4) took a Texas heart shot with his bow, although this shot probably is what killed him it also probably ruined more meat,
5) packed meat before getting the moose all quartered up

I am not trying to slam the dude, this guys moose hunt and video is very cool!! I just thought there were some things that could be discussed.

I think if I shot a moose and was alone there is a list of things that need to be done first.

#1 I would be capeing it out. Not packing the cape but capeing it and laying the cape a little ways away from the main body to cool. This also would help if a bear does show up. Maybe he wouldn't mess with the cape and skull.

#2 completely quarter as much as I could given daylight. You can always load your pack just b4 you leave that night for camp to pack out your first trip.

Other than that he did pretty well for a solo hunt. I have never shot a moose so I can't say for certain exactly what I would do. But those are the two things that I think would be most important.

Taking a moose apart alone really isn't that bad if you use a gutless quartering method. Working alone in the conditions he was in I can easily have the moose taken apart & bagged in under 6 hrs. Probably closer to 4. That's not boning by the way. it's mostly a mental thing. Like an elephant... One bite at a time.
Then get it all a ways from the gut pile. Bears like gut piles. If possible set it in an area that is open so you can see if a bear finds your meat from a distance.
This year my partner & I took apart my mid size bull in under 2 hrs from the time the knives came out to the time it was all loaded in the 6 wheeler. Ribs, neck, backstrap were all stripped from the bone, quarters whole. That wasn't a big hurry, we were taking pics, & we gabbed with a couple of other hunters that stopped for a few minutes.

I've left moose overnight after a kill on several occasions. But always roll the guts out and pull the hide back before leaving it for the night.

I've done 3 of them by myself and Vance is right. 4 - 6 hrs is about what it takes doing the gutless method. And I strip the meat off the ribs. 2 of those I shot near dark and spent several hours doing the deed by headlamp, singing very loudly the whole time I might add! It's a little nerve racking doing it at night.
