Im a bow hunter, havent hunted with a rifel for over 10 yrs but im considering getting back into it. I almost baught a tc 300 today due to a sale at cabelas and didnt go through with it cause i know in the gun world you get what you pay for. Im not looking for a $1k rifle and have no intention of making a bunch of modifications other than possibly the trigger and a good scope. Im looking for some options that will get me shooting again for 4-6 hundred (rifle only) that im not going to regret buying and struggle to keep good groups at 3-400yds cause of a cheap purchase. I dont know much about rifles and i may have expectations outside of my wallet range but im looking for some input to get me on the right track.

I should add that im attracted to the 300wm and 7mm mag. But open to suggestions. I hunt elk and deer so i appreciate a bit of knock down power.

Tikka T3 in 300WM would be a great choice. You can find them blued/synthetic for 600$ or so. I wish they would make a 280 AI...

Tikka T3x in 6.5CM with a SWFA in sportsmatch rings shooting the Hornady 147eldm factory ammo and don’t look back.
Hard to argue with this, even though I’m not a fan of Tikka rifles.

Also, I’ve never been able to find a new Tikka for less than around $800 once tax, shipping and FFL fees are taken into consideration. Sometimes even more than $800.

I looked for an inexpensive rifle/scope combo a couple of years ago that would be reliable, durable, accurate and easy to care for as a backup rifle and one friends could borrow to get into hunting. My total budget was $1,000 for the whole rig, including scope and mounting system. I figured $500 each should do the trick but stumbled onto a Winchester rebate for both the Winchester XPR rifle and Winchester Deer Season XP ammo which was too good to pass up. The reviews on the rifle all said they were shooters and very reliable and weather-resistant. So, $300 and four days later I had a new Winchester XPR in 6.5 Creedmoor along with two boxes of Winchester Deer Season XP 125gr in my hands. I threw the extra cash I saved into glass and had a new Zeiss HD5 delivered a few days later, then put it all together after the Winchester XPR mounts (actually Talley Lightweights) arrived the following week.

The first three shots out of the rifle using that ammo printed into 3/4” at 100 yards. It also shoots other factory loads into even smaller groups, and I shot my first-ever sub-1/4” group with this rifle and the factory Winchester 142gr ABLR ammo. She has run flawlessly ever since, and it is nice to have such great glass on an inexpensive (but accurate!) rifle.

Just another way you could go and save $$$ over a Tikka.

He says he want the knockdown power of a 300 for deer and elk, but you suggest a 6.5....
The OP is an admitted rookie to rifle hunting, no issue with someone suggesting something other than what he original wanted. It's possible the other guy knows more about rifle hunting than the OP. It's also likely that OP will be more accurate and thus more effective with a smaller cartridge, being he has little experience with rifle hunting.

Could a guy buy a 7mm-08 and have a 280ai reamer ran into it? Will a 280ai clean up a 7mm08? I think it should, but not certain. I sorta did the same thing and went from a 6.5 creed to 6.5x284.

It usually takes a dedicated rifleman to want to ride a lightweight magnum. I wouldn't go any bigger than 270 WSM or 7mmRM. The difference in most of the economy models comes down to the stock. TIKKA has the best stock but you'll have to shop around to meet your budget.

There's something to be said for a used 30-06 or 270.

For what you are asking about I would not go magnum. Get something you can shoot without learning any bad flinching habits and fire away.

7-08 is a short action 280AI is a long action. Now if we’re talking Tikkas then yes it would work with a different bolt stop and mag. One action length on a Tikka.

Yep talking about Tikka. That's what I did with a Tikka superlite in 6.5 Creed and went to a long action cartridge.
