A decent Rifle

I got a Tikka 300 WSM and it is a fabulous rifle. Also lightweight, and kicks like a mule. 300 is overkill for deer and antelope. Works wonders on elk, particularly at longer distances. Go the heaviest you can shoot well. That said, 6.5, 270, 7-08, 30-06, 308, 7mm, and 300 are all proven rounds that will put elk on the ground, if you hit them square. My first elk was with a 25-06 at 350 yards.

I was once blind, weak, misinformed and had a manbun...since the creedmore came into my life im still all of those things, but now ive moved a flatbill into my styling repertoire and im never looking back!!

God how I hate 6.5cm. It could be the best cartridge on planet earth and I'd still refuse to even let one in my house.

I considered buying one a couple years ago. Makes me want to take a shower just thinking about it.

I bought one and never bought a bullet. It got turned into something better asap.

I had a 300 win mag superlite t3x and wasn’t overly impressed with its accuracy. It was acceptable, but nothing to write home about. The mag length and twist raise was limiting from a handloaders perspective. It’s getting turned into a proof barreled 270 wsm now. 300 win and 7 rem mag are great cartridges in standard weight rifles. Leave the ultralights to milder cartridges. I wouldn’t write off the TC, my buddy has one in 30-06 and I shot a 3/4 inch group with cheap ammo and a junker scope. Impressive for the price. The ruger Americans are supposed to shoot quite well for the price point too.

Any reason to pay the extra for stainless? It would be limited to Colorado/Wyoming mostly with an occasional trip to NM *AZ. My backpack hunts 99% of the time are archery, so I figure I could get it cleaned up every night if needed. I haven’t done a lot of rifle hunts and my old savage doesn’t ask for much.

I like the long action cartridges .270 and 30-06.

I’ve had the tx3 lite 30-06 blued for a few years and have been very pleased with it. lighter and less expensive than the stainless model. Extra money for optics.

Typically clean only after the hunting trip. Might wipe it down if it got wet.

I can't argue with the consensus here, T3x. I'm a MASSIVE Savage fan & I still can't find a fault with the Tikka. I utterly adore mine. If I could only keep one gun from my safe, that would be it.
However, I'd be sorely tempted to stick with milder caliber. 30-06 will kill anything you point it at. It's my chosen caliber for elk. I know a .300WM/WSM technically has a bit more ass to it, but inside of 400yds, I really can't imagine a situation where any elk is going to know the difference.
My shoulder, however, can absolutely tell the difference! A WSM is barely unpleasant, a long action Magnum is barely tolerable.
I like shooting a LOT during the off season & I'm pretty sure that a big mag would be detrimental to my enjoyment.
The only other rifle I consider taking west is a Savage LWH in .308, a caliber I'm totally confident in to 300, but only because it's such a joy to carry at a hair under 6lb, loaded. However, it barely gets shot, simply because the felt recoil compared to my slightly heavier '06 tikka, is brutal.
