Just sent in our deposit for next years Moose/Caribou hunt. Taking my dad again with me. We went together in 2016. It was my fathers first big game hunt besides deer. He is primarily an upland bird hunter.
I will be bowhunting for caribou and moose he will be hunting with a rifle for moose.

Last trip I bought him a Tikka T3X in 7mmRM, shot 162 grain Horandy interloks factory loads. They shot well out of the rifle. He killed his moose at a whooping 35 yards. I topped it with zeiss V4.
Going to stick with the 162 grain interloks as have them already and they shoot well.

Option number 2
I bought on a whim a T3X compact (20 inch barrel ) in 308win, topped it with lecia ER5 2x10x50, shot it with 165 grain Trophy Bonded factory loads and it shoots very well. Also shot but 180 grain partitions factory loads, they shot good but not as well as the 165 gr TB. Both loads are more then accurate enough for this venture.

Rifle shots in this area can be from bow range to the skys the limit. However my fathers skill set is such that he is comfortable out to 300-350 on moose. From my limited (200 yards) shooting both these guns and loads are plenty accurate for that distance.

Here is my quandy. I havent rifle hunted but one day in the last 15 years or so. I really dont need both of these. I been in the process of selling pretty much all my center fire bolt action rifles. I plan on keeping a handful at most along with my ARs and handguns. I been thinking of selling the 7mm Rm.

First any compelling reason not sell the 7mm and have him just take the 308 and secondly, which of the above options would you take?

Thanks for the advise.

I've never been moose hunting, but I'm positive the 7 Mag is better for moose than the .308.

Either will do the job, but the 7 Mag will do it better.

I'm in the opposite camp. I'd keep the .308 and call it good. It'll kill everything the 7 mag will, cheaper, with less recoil, and most people shoot a lighter recoiling rifle better. There's nothing on this continent you can't kill with a .308. Might not be the preferred caliber for grizz, but neither is the 7mag. Besides, old timers killed bears with pistol calibers we'd laugh at these days.

I sold my 7mm rem mag and bought a T3 30-06. The only reason I bought the 30-06 over the .308 is that they weighed the same in the T3.

I'm not to keen on long-range shooting so I am happy with standard calibers. I grew up hunting moose and my brothers, shooting a .270 and a .308, killed moose just fine. The 7mm did not offer me any advantage.

If I could only have one gun for the rest of my life it would be a 30-06 or a .308.

oh ya, my Dad has the the compact in .308 and it is a great rifle. Actually, he was out with my 13 yr old nephew hunting moose today with that gun.

The 7 rm seems to cover the base that your bow hunting doesn't, longer range. Not that the 308 couldn't, but the 7 rm certainly would leave the door open noticeably farther. That's coming from a lover of the 308.

Had both, 308 was turned into a 358 for baited bear hunting.....7mm Rem Mag rides in the truck daily....from mice to moose 7 mm mag.

7RM would be my choice, just because I am very confident in mine. Which do you pick up 1st to shoot for fun? That may be the one you prefer, and that should be the one you keep.

I definitely agree with elkduds about keeping the one you shoot the most confidently. That's what is matters most!

I think we were about evenly split...sooooo, sell them both and get a 7mm08. Problem solved. One of my all time favorite calibers lol.

I have a model 70 feather weight in 7x57. It's a pretty decent shooter and nice to carry around!

Each one is way more that capable than killing a moose. Pick with rifle you personally like better and rock on.

Both calibers are totally fine for everything in NA. Instead of asking what caliber why don't you consider which rifle fits your frame better, your happy with accuracy, and which one you enjoy shooting more?

The compact should have a shorter LOP so is better suited to smaller frame shooters. The 20 inch barrel is nice, but I would not take that if I was wearing my scope due to eye relief issues. If you prefer one scope over the other you can always just swap.

Even though I like my 7 mm mag, this notion has a lot of appeal to me. I have contemplated this very thing and getting rid of my Rem Mag, 358 and 06 in favor of one very high quality 7mm-08

I am most likey going to just keep them both for the time being. I will have dad take the 7mm as he as he successfully used it on moose and should have confidence in it.
After the hunt I will most likely sell it as I dont need it.

Thanks for all the responses.
