Just sent in our deposit for next years Moose/Caribou hunt. Taking my dad again with me. We went together in 2016. It was my fathers first big game hunt besides deer. He is primarily an upland bird hunter.
I will be bowhunting for caribou and moose he will be hunting with a rifle for moose.
Last trip I bought him a Tikka T3X in 7mmRM, shot 162 grain Horandy interloks factory loads. They shot well out of the rifle. He killed his moose at a whooping 35 yards. I topped it with zeiss V4.
Going to stick with the 162 grain interloks as have them already and they shoot well.
Option number 2
I bought on a whim a T3X compact (20 inch barrel ) in 308win, topped it with lecia ER5 2x10x50, shot it with 165 grain Trophy Bonded factory loads and it shoots very well. Also shot but 180 grain partitions factory loads, they shot good but not as well as the 165 gr TB. Both loads are more then accurate enough for this venture.
Rifle shots in this area can be from bow range to the skys the limit. However my fathers skill set is such that he is comfortable out to 300-350 on moose. From my limited (200 yards) shooting both these guns and loads are plenty accurate for that distance.
Here is my quandy. I havent rifle hunted but one day in the last 15 years or so. I really dont need both of these. I been in the process of selling pretty much all my center fire bolt action rifles. I plan on keeping a handful at most along with my ARs and handguns. I been thinking of selling the 7mm Rm.
First any compelling reason not sell the 7mm and have him just take the 308 and secondly, which of the above options would you take?
Thanks for the advise.
