7mm-08 Rem success on big game

My daughter shot her first elk last year at 362 yards, 140 gr Barnes TSX, Federal premium ammo. One shot kill.

Between her, my wife and my son, they've killed more than 20 whitetail bucks from between 75 and 250 yards, 1 black bear and 1 antelope at 425 yards. Most were shot with 140 gr Federal Fusion ammo. Several were killed with 120 gr Barnes TTSX ammo.

I just purchased another 7mm-08, now I have 3, it is a great cartridge.

When I look at load data for it doesn’t seem like there is another powder that really blows the doors of varget in the velocity department.
Seems varget is always the powder that comes up with that combo when someone mentions it.
I see all these loads for Stabull and CFE-223 but I haven't heard anything from anybody that's truly note worthy. Certainly not enough to make me consider changing from Varget.

Shot an elk at 330 yds. Dropped in its tracks. 140 gr. nosler Accubond. Hit the bull in the spine shooting off 1 knee. Bullet was recovered, and it had exceptional mushroom and weight retention. Factory Nosler ammo.

Christensen mesa 7mm-08 topped with an older illuminated vx3- 4-14 boone an crockett reticle.

My son shot his first buck also with the same rifle and ammo...265 yds...double lunger...buck only went 30 yds. 1 shot.
I love this caliber. Low recoil, exceptional accuracy, and plenty of knock down power out to 400 yds....thats all the further I need to shoot...

My favorite is an old pre '64 winchester 7x57 mauser...ballistically, very similar to the 7mm-08. You hardly notice the recoil...a joy to shoot and deadly accurate with barnes 145 lrx, 150gr. Sierra game kings and H4350

162gr ELDM 286 yards. Cow elk.

2604 MV, 9 twist Browning X Bolt 20" barrel.

First pick entrance. Second Pic exit.

Edit: she was dead within 10 seconds of impact. Did one quick circle and went down. I didn't open chest cavity but based on entrance snd exit I'd say top of hear and both lungs. Uphill shot.

First 160 TMK kill. PA doe, impact around 2400fps. Shot hit the neck almost exactly halfway between the body and head but a touch low. Ended up going under the neck bone and seems to have somehow not caught very much as there was almost no blood exiting the 2 1/4 inch exit wound and the deer was still alive when we got to it about 40 seconds after the first shot. A second shot was placed into the head from a low angle, entering the head about an inch behind the eye and basically detonated the entire top of the skull. Impact on the 2nd shot was 2570.

Overall happy with the TMK, seemed to open very quickly. Neck length on the neck shot was about half an inch. Hoping to get more data on it with chest shots and the like.1764813729174.png

Kill 2 with 160 TMK, probably the last unless one of the two 7-08 shooters can find a legal buck. Impact velocity 2380, impact the front edge of the onside shoulder blade quartered to slightly downhill. Neck length less than an inch, 2" hole by the time it impacted the scapula which then turned into a ~6.5 inch tear as it entered and passed through the rib cage. The main jacket and core seem to have dead centered the spine, blowing chunks of vertebrae down through the lungs and out through the exit which was just behind the offside shoulder. Jacket (37gr) and core (40gr) separated sometime around here and were caught under the hide. Some other pieces of bullet and/or a chunk of spine exited, leaving a 2" oblong hole in the hide and a 3" oblong hole under it. Deer obviously dropped and was motionless in under 8 seconds.

Ribcage with a piece of spine barely hanging on at the 2" mark

Exit, looks smaller but was in fact 3"

Look forward to using them again, as well as other TMKs in different calibers
