6mm /.243 hunting success on Big Game

I took a bull elk with my 20” 6 creedmoor this year…the shot was 645 yards with almost no wind…I shot him twice on one side and twice on the other…the bullet was an 87g v max…we found one bullet during processing…it was expanded within a 1/8” on the base of the bullet…they killed the bull but I won’t use those again…they shoot so well out of my rifle that I haven’t zeroed any other ammo yet.

That was out of a 6x45 which is a 223 necked up. That cartridge would be a far better choice for the 87 VMAX. Making some basic assumptions of a MV of 3100 fps with the 20" barrel the bullet was around 1725 fps at impact and would have had around 37" of wind drift @10 mph at 645 yards. For comparison, my 6CM at the same distance with the 105 Berger with a MV of 2895 fps would impact with 1920 fps and 27" of drift at 10 mph. A change in bullet could have definitely been made to optimize the results.

87 Vmax has impressed me. Numerous coyotes and a couple hogs at 100 yards. The hogs didn’t make it 10 yards.

The most ideal coyote bullet IMO. It is a flat out hammer and works great on the piggies as well

Yes softball size would cavities at 40 yards and absolute distraction at 250 yards.

18” 6 creedmoor with factory 103 Eld-x.
300 yards. Hard quartering to on the first round shredded one lung and turned the liver to soup. Broadside second shot got the heart. Caught both bullets but only have a picture of the lung/liver one. Watched both impacts.

That’s awesome. Rifle build specs? And what velocity are you getting with the 103s?

It’s a Christensen action with a x-caliber barrel. Western precision rifles stock. Hawkins rings and a Razor LHT. The 103’s are running at 2930 fps.

20 inch 6 creed with 108eldm at 80 yards. Shot quartering too and dropped on the spot basically. Standard eldm entry and exit. Lots of damage internally.

First big game down with my 6CM today. 3x3 buck at about 70 yards. The shot was solid right into the shoulder and he dropped fast, lights out.

I’m stoked on this rifle combination. It’s kind of funny though…. I shoot long distance constantly. Weird positions, varied wind and terrain, positions, all of it. And still every thing I’ve killed has been 150 or less

87gr vmax at approx 2540 impact velocity. I posted a little more on the ultralight ultralight rifles thread.
Entrance, damage under the hide, and exit (was a little bigger than a golf ball, I cut it open to about a dollar bill to bleed him out) no bullet fragments found.

Wow yeah definitely have not had an exit like that personally. I only have 6 animals with eldm bullets so not a lot. What I’ve seen in this thread before was what I have seen with my previous 6 animals as well.

6mm CM, 103 ELDx, impact velocity was 2735 fps. Mature buck for around here, 170 lbs.

Quartering toward me, hit the crease, straight down, no drama. Bullet traveled through the spine and lodged in the offside rib cage, just under the skin.

Retained weight of 42.5 grains. The core separated but was right there beside the jacket. GTG in my book.

I shot a ram last week with the 108 elf-m at 130 yards from a 243 AI. Muzzle velocity 3100 fps. Neither shot exited, but insides appear to have been obliterated. I shot him late and was solo, didn’t feel like opening him up for pics (gutless). After the shot, they were bunched up so I couldn’t get a quick follow up. He went down approximately 9 secs after first shot. The rest ran away a short distance, he got up clearly sick. He was facing away so I waited for a better shot. Second shot was quartering away, dropped immediately at the shot, then got up again. He went back down before I could shoot again. 2 things; sheep are much tougher than I thought they were, that bullet absolutely wrecked the vitals and gut. Looking forward to killing a bull in a few weeks with it.
