6mm /.243 hunting success on Big Game

So... my 8 twist 243 tikka came in this afternoon and I was doing a little measuring. Has anyone loaded the 112 match burners to fit the tikka medium mag? I measure it at 2.840" but the barnes data has them loaded at 2.850". I don't have any on hand yet so I can't see if they would end up with the ogive back in the case mouth.

Tikka m+ magazine, beleive it'll take near 2.98 coal, they come for the 65 creed.

It is, however I feel Tikka should've opted for 6cm with it's generous freebore and fast twist would been the better choice for long heavy high bc bullets. Also the large variety of excellent brass from Peterson alpha and lapua. Plus great ammo from sierra, Berger and Hdy.

I'd buy the 243 first, just so I didnt have to admit to anybody that I bought a creedmor

A 6CM is definitely not a 6mm cartridge that needs more.

I've shot or been a part of shooting in excess of 100 animals with the 243 and 6mm Creedmoor. Half have been deer and antelope with the rest being coyotes, jack rabbits, prairie dogs, and other varmints. Most of these were taken with the plain jane Remington CoreLokt 100 grain 243 ammo with a half dozen deer and antelope taken with the 85 Sierra Game King BTHP in 243 and another half dozen with the 95 grain Barnes LRX in the 6CM.

6mm cartridges are generally a pleasure to shoot and easy to carry as they don't require a long heavy barrel to shoot well.

Attached is my first big game animal taken with a 243 Winchester M70 and the 100 gr CoreLokt. This antelope was taken in 1988 at around 300 yards based on where my dad told me to aim and where the bullet hit using my drop chart since there were no range finders back then.

Also attached is my daughter's first antelope taken at 185 yards with the 6CM and the 95 grain LRX.

6cm is a very versatile round, 243 would be as much so if they were sold with a fast twist. I see a ruger American predator 6cm there.....have the same rifle. It's my budget truck gun(giving it away to the nephew soon) but that cheap beater shoots fantastic with factory ammo, and hand loads. Like makes me wonder why I give me gunsmith several Gs to do work that equals or just slightly betters a $400 bargain bin rifle. But it's a 6mm, they all freakin shoot great. From 6x223 to 6mm Saum. Just shoot.......

I’ve used my 243 to kill dozens of deer with factory loads from 75gr to 100gr. My preferred ammo was alway Remington 100 gr core lokt.

I’ve also killed deer with the 308, 264, 300 Remington ultra mag and the only one that put the down as fast was the 300 ultra mag. But it kicked like crazy and the muzzle last would bow your hat off! I do like my 264 sitting in a blind in here Texas but it’s to heavy to haul around elk hunting at 12 lbs. I’ve only been elk hunting once and that what I took, it was rough. Now I’m thinking the 243 might be enough.

They perform in a similar manner compared to 105 hybrid target or 108 ELD-M?

Is the 243 a decent host for a suppressor? Just wanting to lower the decibels some for hunting that is closer to town. Also, what has been the finding for minimum barrel length if I wanted to chop a barrel? I know that higher fps is part of what makes this round work. TIA.

I shot a suppressed 243 at coyotes for years. I ran 70 gr noslers at 3500+ with a 20" barrel.

EVERYTHING is a great host for a suppressor and 243 is a sweetheart. There won't be barrel length restrictions that are too bad for most makers with the smaller cartridges but you need to check with the manufacturer of whatever can you have.

My 243 suppressed with an 18” barrel and 75gr Vmax hornady superformance is About 3225fps and an amazing suppressor host.
