6mm /.243 hunting success on Big Game

Looks like reports of Tikka .243 Win with 8” twist barrels is true!

Anyone going to grab one and rechamber to 243 AI or 6mm Rem AI?

All of my critters with the 6mm Remington have been taken using 100 gr. Nosler Partitions. Shot a lot of deer, antelope, and a spike bull at 30 yards. The spike I shot in heavy timber at 30 yards in the shoulder. It exited the off-side just in front of the left shoulder. He staggered a few steps and I shot him again in the neck. I've killed antelope and deer at really close ranges and out to 500 yards.

My son has taken 3 antelope, a couple deer, and a nice big cow elk with with his 6mm Remington. The first two were taken with 100 gr. Nosler Partitions, and the rest including his cow elk with a 90 gr. Nosler E-tip. His cow was broadside at 350 yards. He hit her tight behind the right shoulder and the bullet angled forward slightly and EXITED her left shoulder. She staggered about 20 yards and dropped. LOVE the 6mm Remington.

I’m looking to cut down and thread my sons model 7 243. I don’t see him shooting over 300 yards where we hunt with this gun. How short should we go? Using a Harvester Evo.

Grew up on a farm(40K acres) in Africa so I was very spoilt with hunting. My caliber of choice growing up was a 243 Win. I shot about +-400 big game animals ranging from warthog-giraffe with it. It’s a very underrated cartridge. Was in a Brno ZKK 602 and used normal bullets from the shelf such as Winchester and PMP. Shot placement is obviously important but it’s such a great rifle. I have a custom built Mauser in 6mm Rem now that unfortunately sits in the safe it’s whole life. Shooting with .30-.375 calibers now but still love breaking out the 243. Feels like I can’t miss with the caliber. 355114EE-9721-4E53-9468-FE99DD5DCBDE.jpeg

What bullet are you planning on shooting?

We shot 95gr SST this year. I have a lot of 95gr Fusions I might try or I will reload some 95gr NBT based on Forms. recommendation. Right now all shots are inside of 100 yards on baited deer. The challenge we have is everything we hunt is surrounded by cutover so I want short tracks with good blood. He had 2 deer this year that were good broadside shots with no blood but the deer was recovered within 100 yards. Internal damage was massive with the SST with exit holes about the size of my index finger.

Oh my that 6mm Remington has to be screaming to be pulled out of the safe and used! That's sacrilegious to leave that wonderful rifle and cartridge sitting in the dark. You can tell by my site name that I'm partial to the 6mm Remington.

Elk, 628 yards, 115gr DTAC, 2,020fps impacts-

First shot quartering to, over 20” of penetration, exit at back of ribs and caught by skin-

Second shot, quartering away, entered just in front of hip, traveled length of body through liver and lungs and getting caught by the scapula after exiting ribs-

Well now I see why people love this round. Sample size of 2 this year both WT and both DRT. Buck was quartering neck shot at 70 yards with 90gr Nosler BT, first bullet I’ve recovered in years but that was because of jack/core separation. It was buried neatly under the far shoulder about an inch deep into the muscle. Doe was clean broadside pass through at 100 yards. Same bullet. Neither really kicked after getting hit. It was almost like a bolt of lightning.

I think it depends on your barrel. I have not played with one yet, but my understanding is tgat have thin barrels to save weight. You might have to go pretty far back to get enough barrel width to thread it.

As for the Evo, mine is in ATF Jail (3 moths and counting).

.243 Win pushing a 95 NBT at 3,050. 100 yard shot, got the back of the close side lung, liver, broke off side femur and exited. Quartering-to body position wasn’t ideal and my shot was just a touch back. Still proved to be effective. These 6mms are hammers on deer sized game.

The thought that 6mms are kids guns is absolute nonsense. I only have experience taking game with the 95 NBT (several) but they are devastating. Every deer I’ve shot with this combo has been DOA. This was the first one that travelled any distance, but I blame that on my shot, not the gun. A .308 wouldn’t have done any different.
