6mm /.243 hunting success on Big Game

Are these the older open nosed dtac? Or the newer closed nosed pointed unit? Are they nose ringed? I'd think your short barrel 6x284 would be similar to a 24-26" 6cm velocity wise.

I have used them all, original open nose, new close nosed and I have 1500 of the new nose ringed...but I havent tested any of those on game yet.
I really didn't notice much difference with the open or close nose.

...and what is your recipe? Brass, COL, powder/charge, and primer? I have a 25-284, and am curious where it stacks up to the 6-284. I'm running a 22" barrel with 134 ELDM over 54.5 grns of H1000 and should be around 2900 MV, but still need to chrono.

I have no doubt a 25x284 will end up at or well above 3000. Even with a 22" barrel. My 25 Creed is at exactly 3000 with a 25" barrel

The rifle isn’t my cup of tea. I do like your caliber choice though.

I actually dropped the barreled action into a Manners folder. (Put a 14.5" 308 into the chassis)

Right on. Given my location (California) I’ll be running the heavier hammers or one of the other non-lead options. Gonna need a long throat I think, but a 104 grain hammer at an easy 3400 sounds pretty legit.

Any progress on this? As another California guy I’d be curious what your results were with the non lead options.

I'm getting very close to 2900fps out of an 18" 6 Creed with 108 ELDMs and 40.2gr of H4350. Not sure on your barrel length but that seems to be a big discrepancy in powder but I'm sure you couldn't use that much 4350 without pressure.

I’ve heard 42.4 gr of h4350 out of a 16” getting 2950 with the 108 eldm

^^^that sounds a bit over pressure.
6cm has a little less capacity than .243w, and book max is 41.1 h4350 and WILL NOT get 2950 with a 108 from a 16".

It seems the 108 eldm is the favorite for the 6mm Creed, but the Berger 108 elite hunter looks like I can get another 100 ish fps at 500 yards due to the better bc. Is there any reason the eldm performs better terminally? Provided accuracy is comparable, any real advantage to the berger?

None yet. This will probably be a 2025 rifle. That said, I’ve had good luck with the 110 Barnes in 30-06. You can push it fast enough that it can act like a hammer-ish design. So far it’s dropped deer without issue. I’m sure a 243 cal 104 grainer with a better bc and a higher starting velocity will work equally well or better.

Bergers are going to penetrate farther, longer neck length, before they begin to expand. If you want a better bc ga precision sells a 109 eld-m that has a g7 bc like the 108 elite. The 108 elite is a great bullet though.

Yeah light and fast is the answer for copper. The 80 TTSX runs great out of my .243. But it definitely limits range because I won’t go blow 2000fps with monos. Haven’t ever messed with hammers. Too many horror stories from people I know over the years.
I’m going to be exploring other non toxic options. Lehigh defense controlled chaos, and bulldozer….etc.

I shoot 41.5 grains out of a 24 inch barrel and 108’s are going 3150

Hell, maybe my experience with .243w is just crap. Take anything i say with a grain of salt i guess.

I get the feeling hornady favors published load data for the CM stuff so it looks better on paper, idk. If you can get 5+ reloads from the brass, then its probably ok.

Yea I aim for 2400 or better with Barnes. Might be unnecessary to keep them that fast, but it’s been a no-fail policy so far. Whatever direction you go (projectile), I’d be interested to see your results.

I can get a little more out of my Alpha brass on a different barrel I shoot PRS with and use 115 Dtacs.

Something to keep in mind though as
Everyone I feel like knows….. every gun is different. They all are indIvidual.

Also said it never showed pressure signs at 44 grains.

Small sample size but shot a cow a couple weeks back with this bullet. Quartering to and a fairly close shot. She didn’t make it 5 yards, basically dead right there. Gutless method so didn’t get in to inspect things to close but there was significant blood trauma on both sides and all the way down the rib cage. It was pretty brutal.

I’ve read of some pencilling complaints but just make sure to check the tips and use the best ones for hunting, and the periodic weird/deformed one for practice. I’ll continue to use them

The ELDM is a different design so you really can’t compare the Berger to them. The ELDM’s will start to upset faster compared to the Berger’s by typically 2-3”. There are lots of ballistic gel tests out there and you can see the difference.

Good to hear. I'm putting my money on the Bergers this year. I haven't been let down by a Berger yet. Also planning on trying a 95gr Nosler BT. Curious about an 80gr barnes too just for shits and giggles. I'm using it on whitetail though.
