6.5 WSM vs 270 WSM

Norma is making 7mm RSAUM but it's expensive and soft . Both Winchester and Remington have all but abandoned the components market to concentrate on loaded ammo production . I have a couple hundred pieces of 7mm RSAUM brass to make my 6.5 RSAUM from and I'll buy some of the GAP 4S brass this summer.

I have a line on a model 70 with all of the work done except the barrel.. trued action, McMillan stock, jeweled trigger.

That's a really good action for the WSM family. Gives 3.05" in the magazine so you can get the longer bullets out of the case.

I don't have the exact specs for the 165gr Matrix vld but going off its claimed bc and measuring some 6.5 150gr vlds with a very close shape and bc I think you would end up with only. 05" of the base sticking past the shoulder / body point into the case. Assuming that you can reach 3000fps you would be able to dial right to 700 yards with the Swarovski BT without hold over with a 225 yard zero. The 6.5 WSM has a pile of bullets that would give similar performance or better but there would be more case work involved. So many great choices for you :)

That's my goal, lighter weight hunting rifle capable of 750. It should weigh under 8 with scope.

My 6.5 SAUM Winchester SA in a McMillan Edge hunter with a 15"lop over the 1"pad. Swarovski 4-12×50 BT4W , Burris Signature Select rings , 25 7/8" #3 fluted Benchmark barrel , scope bikini cover , and snipepod adapter comes in at 9.0 lbs on the dot. With a shorter stock , Talley lightweight rings , and a little shorter barrel you'll be right around 8lbs.

I draw Norma 300SAUM brass down & turn them for my 6.5 GAP 4s chamber. Had an 11 & 15yr old both enter the "1K club" with it, over the weekend. 140 JLKs @ 1058 yds, two hits apiece after I got them centered up in the wind...

Initial brass prep IS tedious, going from .308 down to .264. But if the factory brass rumor comes true, the popularity of the 6.5 SAUM should be a home run for even novice reloaders. Still won't be as "turn key" as the 6.5 Nosler, but that SAUM sure is easy to like from a hunting weight short action rifle. That 11 & 15yr old sure seemed to like it pretty good...

I've been shooting a custom 270 WSM for a few years. Stiller action, Jewell trigger, Satern 26" #4 fluted barrel, Manners carbon fiber stock, regular old Talley steel rings/bases, and a NF 2.5-10x32. Weighs just a hair over 8 lbs. I've been shooting Berger 140 VLD's because they shoot half MOA in the rifle. Mostly shot marmots with it, and one elk. She died just fine. I had planned to rebarrel to 7 WSM when this one is done, but I really don't see enough advantage between the two to worry with. I will have a 9 twist barrel to shoot the Matrix 165's though.
My long range varmint gun is a 14 lb 7 mag shooting 180 Berger VLD's. I think 180's out of my 8 lb rifle will begin to recoil heavy, and I went with the 270 to get away from heavy recoiling rifles.

Hello Guys
I have a Winchester 70 in .270WSM and its devastating on deer the accuracy is very good too very flat out beyond 300yards my trigger weight on this is about 1.5 Lbs , I use the 140 Grn Sierra Game King or the Remington Premier 130Grn Accu Tip , I have a 6.5-270WSM its been built on an Hoffam action with a trigger weight of abot 3.5 Ounce its got a 28" barrel and it shoots one hole groups at 100 yards with my majic load with 120Grn Sierra match king it shot under 1.00" approx 0.6" @ 1000yard I was pushing her at around 3250 Fps both of my rifle have extreme accuracy , and are very lethal ! on Deer and Varmints Foxes etc.
