Going to be feeding a new tikka if that matters.

Looking for a factory hunting round that is lead free. What are people using?

Thanks

I’m having good luck with the Barnes TTSX in three guns. The bullet performance is really good. Accuracy is great. I’ve been impressed.

Keep the barrel fouled. Don’t clean it until you he groups start opening up. Don’t overheat the barrel. They shoot great this way.

I've had good luck with the Barnes LRX out of my 6.5 CM Montana. I don't think Barnes loads their TTSX or TSX in factory ammo for 6.5 CM, but those have also worked fairly well in my hand loads. 130 gr worked better for me than 140.

I just got back from an elk hunt - I shot a bull elk at 290 with my 6.5 CM launching 120 Etips, complete pass through and one shot kill - two others in camp shot bulls, 1 bull at just under 200 yds with 127 LRX, first shot was a bit low and broke both shoulders/high front legs, second ended the discussion - Other hunter used my rifle, another pass through at 325+ - all 3 were mature bulls shot with 6.5 CM's

which brings me to another comment, need to watch the monolithics and not punch a hole in an animal standing behind the intended target - It SUCKS when that happens and it appears to happen a lot with "monos"

I'll add that the Barnes 127 LRX has been shooting very well in multiple rifles (of the very small cross section I've shot) and works exceedingly well on game

I have to assume you mean an unseen animal right? Folks aren't shooting at a target animal with another right behind are they?

My buddy dropped a bull elk at 400 yards with hornady factory 120 GMX. Exited the far side and he dropped dead. Only animal we used it on. I switched to 140 Amax for no real good reason beside I prefer a frangible bullet.

I know the OP posted that they were looking for factory rounds, but for those of you on this thread that roll your own, I tried out the Hammer Bullets SledgeHammer on my Afognak Island elk hunt, and the bullet worked quickly on two elk, a 5x5 bull and a large cow. There is another thread on the Hammer and Cutting Edge bullets at http://www.rokslide.com/forums/firearms/77239-hammer-bullets-mono-metal-option.html.

The bullet is designed to shed petals after entry creating a large wound channel, with 40-60% of the bullet continuing through. I am really impressed with both the accuracy and terminal performance and just ordered myself enough to load up for next year, too. Steve at Hammer Bullets has been great to work with and provided recommended load data to get started.

it's all too easy to, in the heat of the moment, pick out an elk and not see or realize that there might be a pass through - anyone who hunts elk knows how they can keg up, I made that mistake many years ago and upon finding TWO blood trails was horrified, ashamed and worried, it does happen ...... and NO, I'm not talking about being a slob hunter (thank you very much)

a frangible bullet may very well be the best answer for a lot of circumstances, I'm now thinking .......

and Yes, I mean "unseen" - if another animal is right behind it should be obviously noticeable but not necessarily at 20, 30, 40 or ?? yards behind, in terrain common to elk hunting

Yeah unseen in the terrain (or tunnel vision), I get that. Your original wording left open the potential interpretation that with a bullet that didn't typically pass through a person might shoot an animal with a known animal directly behind it. I asked the question to clarify and didn't jump to any conclusions. :)
