6.5 creedmoor bullet

I saw an older thread discussing this and just wanted to know what the current favorite loads are - planning on picking a savage LW hunter up this week, and looking for ideas as to bullet choice. I'll likely shoot factory for the first couple trips, and work on a load this winter when things calm down.

Looking for advice as to good factory load - accurate, but can be used for deer or elk.

For re-loading, looking at the barnes lrx, accubond LR etc.

Any other ideas/advice?

129 ABLR is my favorite followed by the 130VLD. Neither are factory loads but can be bought loaded from copper creek ammo and dallasreloads(both are usually to your door with in 5 business days or less)

how do the VLDs and Hybrids due if you hit a shoulder? Say 300 yard shot on a bull, but you hit a shoulder... it gonna punch through and hold together?

140 ELD Match. My friend shot a bull with mine at 310 yards last weekend. The first shot, bedded down, broke the onside shoulder and got both lungs. The second went through the top of the heart and lungs, stopping under the hide. It dropped the bull hard. Mine are reloads but the Hornady factory load is great. If you are planning to hit elk shoulders with the Creedmoor, I think Barnes is the way to go. Personally I'd take a bone free vital shot on elk with a bullet like the ELD. They do great on those types of shots.

Good tips thanks all. My plan isnt to shoot through the shoulder necessarily, i just like knowing it will make it through if the shot is a little off, or if i decide i need to anchor an animal right there.

Works great(wouldn't me my choice of placement but wouldn't not take it), creedmoor isn't a hot round. Every bullet has a max and min velocity threshold. Creedmoor excels with cup and core or mildly bonded bullets at distance.

Now from experience I wouldn't load a 115 Gr VLD in a 257 wby @3400 and start taking shoulder shots at 300 or under

I used a 6.5 Creedmoor and a Copper Creek Ammo loaded with Berger 130 grain VLD Hunter for Antelope this year. This is my first time with a .264/ 6.5. I know antelope is about the smallest big game animal we have, but it made me a believer in the bullet. I've never seen an animal fall so hard and expire so quickly. I hit above the heart and double lunged it. It turned both lungs into meat sludge soup. And the bullet exited with a 2" hole. Shot was a little under 200 yards and he never took a step. It blew the legs out from under him. The goat scored at 79". The pics in the Antelope forum meat thread. I'll have no problems using this combo on deer in the future.

No bullet in the world will help much if the shot is off. Hit it in vials. Practice. Don't take shots you can't make cleanly.

For elk, I'll leave the 6.5 CM at home, and will take the 7mm Rem Mag.

I shot a cow with a 130 accubond from my 260 doing about 2950 at the muzzle and the cow was around 80 yards. Shot head on through the pocket inside the shoulder. Found the bullet just under the hide at the offside hip

I am in the same boat. I recently bought a Christensen Arms Rogue in 6.5 Creed. The past weekend shot it for the first time using
1. Hornady 129gr SST
2. Hornady 129gr GMX
3. Hornady 140gr AMAX
4. Hornady 143gr ELDX
After I had some fouling built up, my groups tightened up and the 143gr. ELDX shot the tightest groups in my rifle. I finished the day with 2 separate 6 shot groups measuring .750-.787". This is certainly not a group to write home about, but that's about the best of my abilities. I've heard great things about two companies called Choice Ammo and Prime Ammo. They both offer 6.5 creed. I can't speak intelligently about them, but heard they put out quality and consistent ammo. I plan on trying both out after the season, but for now I'm completely satisfied with the ELDX.

Funny, I'm leaving the 7mm Rem Mag at home and taking the 6.5x47. 136 Scenars for me and I'll be aiming for shoulders.
