6-280 Ackley

Anybody ever heard of this being done?
Yes and there are other variants off the parent case. 6-06, 6-06ai, 240gibs, 243 catbird, etc. I've recently been nerding out looking at them all. 4d reamers lists many of them out. https://4drentals.com/products/reamer-rentals/rifle/2436mm/

When the dust settles though the easier buttons are 6cm / 243 and then a little less easy 243ai. More velocity the 6-284 or 6-PRC seem a bit better suited than the tall powder column of the 06' family tree. But they all sound fun.

I have a 243 Super Rock Chucker with a #4 28” barrel and usually call it a 6mm-06 or folks get confused. It’s an “improved” case with slightly steeper shoulder and less taper than the parent ‘06 case, but not as steep as an Ackley Improved, and the shoulder isn’t as far forward as the 280. There are some different specs for this wildcat and it’s been confusing enough that I bought chamber casting materials to even know how to get started to fire form cases. The easy way is to not over think it, neck down some 25-06 brass and hard jamb the bullets into the rifling and use moderate loads with enough umph to blow the shoulder out.

A few decades ago the Super Rock Chucker was more common, dies were easy to find for under $100, barrel makers offered the chambering, but it’s fallen out of favor and dies are scarce or $300 for custom dies. When my barrel is burned out I’ll probably get another just like it because the name is old and kind of cool.

There would be a big advantage to sticking with a “pure” 6mm-06 or one based on the 280AI. Then full length bushing dies could be bought for the parent case and used with 6mm bushings.

It will sound like I’m full of fluff, but one of these fast 6mm cartridges will quickly be one of your favorites. I even love the shape of the 240 Weatherby case, but it’s not anything special performance wise - had it been based on the 257 Wby case it would have as much capacity as anyone would want. If I had a short action the 6-284 would be cool.

If anybody is interested, I have a line on 6-284 brass.

He prepares the cases starting with Norma 6.5-284. He also stocks tons of odd ball cartridge brass as well. It's shipped bulk in plastic bags, but the brass looks very good and I never noticed any dings, dents, or other imperfections with the pieces I received.
It’s this a fairly straightforward neck down cartridge? Or is neck turning involved (if so is he doing it)?
