308 mountain rifle

sounds like a plan! Just dont come back and carp cause it dont shoot benchrest accuracy,,like so many do. Wish I had bought one back in the early 90's from the custom shop,,one that got away from my bucket list...good luck

I won’t. I only use the bench to zero one in. I practice other ways that are more real world

I'd look hard at the Kimber Adirondack or Barrett Fieldcraft for a 200 yard gun. Probably the Kimber for me at that range but mainly because I like the 3 position safety. I'd go with a Leupold 2.5-8x scope. All the glass needed for that range with 8x to help dial up to see holes between tree limbs to thread a bullet through if necessary.

I'd probably be looking at shooting a 165 or 180gr Accubond for a bullet, whatever the gun liked best. I've used a lot of Accubonds and they seem to open quick while retaining 60% or more of their weight even from a magnum. From a shorter barreled 308 I'd bet they retain 70% or more and kill very well.

I bought a Ruger scout rifle with a Leupold VX-6 1-6x that I mounted on an XS rail in a conventional scope location. The XS rail lets me use a standard scope while still having a back-up iron sight. It's the lighter synthetic stocked version of the Ruger. After a trigger job it is a fine brush gun for my needs that can still reach out further than my 30-30 if needed. I have not yet hunted with it, but have taken it when helping others track a wounded animal a few times. I have a color blind neighbor who hunts some of our land. If he gets a buck he usually just slips out and waits for his son or I to help recover it since he can't see the blood. I will likely hunt with the rifle in the future when the ability to shoot past 250 yards is not an advantage.

Short 308's make a really handy hard hitting rifle.

Thanks for the advice. I have been looking at different guns for the past little while I really like the tikka t3 compact also

I ended up grabbing a Kimber Hunter in 308 and a used vx3I 2.5-8 with a #4 reticle and CDS on it. Ordering some Talley rings and it should be a dandy lightweight rifle.

I’m looking at buying a 308 Remington model 7 threaded for back pack hunting elk and mule deer. I do not want to shoot over 200 yards and will equip with vortex scope and nosler 150 gr trophy grade ammo. What do y’all think.
My Model 7 does 200 just fine!
