I’ve got an upcoming moose hunt next year and want to try working up a load for 308 as well as a 300wsm. So I’m looking for suggestions on some good projos for moose. Range would be out to 300 yards.

Can’t go wrong with any of those bullets but lately I’ve been working on lots of loads with the Barnes and hammer bullets.

the Barnes 168g ttsx is shooting really well out of my 308 as is the hammer 166g, I’d use either one on a moose with my 308 using H4895.

It seems like a 300wsm using eitherof those bullets would kick ass.

Any 30 caliber core-bonded bullet that flies well out of your rifle. Accubond, TTSX, TBT - they’re all good.

The TTSX should have the highest weight retention. Any of them will do nicely when placed in the lungs within your expected shooting range.

I've taken several deer, a caribou, and a red stag with a 30 cal eld-x and each time it performed well.

I just moved to 165 TSX in my 300 WSM. I am gonna try those this year. My rifle likes them and I will be limiting my shots to 350 or less.

Pick the one that your gun likes best.

I think the 165 gr. Accubond or Partition in your 308 would be great as would a 150 gr. E-tip.

300 WSM it would be hard to go wrong with a 180 gr. Accubond or Partition and a 165 gr. E-tip.

I used this bullet last year on my moose and he dropped like a rock

For the .308 look at Barnes 165 or 168 grain TTSX. For the 300 WSM the Barnes 180 grain TTSX is a great choice. I'm using the 180 grain TTSX out of my 300 WSM (Christensen Arms Classic Carbon with 24 inch barrel) and it runs just shy of 3000 fps. That should be plenty for a moose (took care of a bull elk last year no problem).

Another vote for the Barnes. With the 308 I'd stick to the 168 TTSX. The 300 WSM could shoot a heavier bullet, maybe the 180 TTSX or 200 LRX, but the same bullet would also be great. Either way, the Barnes bullets will give you the best chance for 2 holes, which I always prefer for blood tracking.

Thanks guys the Barnes are definately on the short list I’m probaby gonna start with some rl15 and imr4350 as I’ve found some data that will work with both rifles. Unfortunately I don’t have any rifle powders in stock at the moment so trying to find things I can play with in both rifles without investing in lots of different stuff at once.

The LRX line from Barnes is worth a look.

I’m in the middle of load development for my 300 WSM with a 200 gr Barnes LRX. It’s going to be my all around Alaska rifle with that bullet

I have had excellent results on elk with my 300wsm and the 168 TTSX and RL 17. It’s a 26” barrel and I get 3180 fps . If loading for both the same bullet that is the one I would use.

IIRC Barnes said the 165 ttsx is for 300 mags and it a bit tougher than the 168 ttsx which is for the 308/30-06 velocity. I went with the 168 for long range where impacts may be slower.

I loaded some 168 ttsx for a friend’s 30-06 and he has been shooting through elk (I think elk are tougher than moose)

the other one to try is the 175LRX if you can find them. My rifle didn’t like them as well so stuck with the 168.

this is what it looks like after going length wise through an elk

I'm a fan of bonded lead bullets. Hornady Internond, Accubond, Partition, etc. I do believe the all Cooper bullets work fine but from my experience they don't transfer quite the same energy to the animal as a lead bullet does. In your .308, I would use 165 grain and 180 in the 300.

Moose aren't hard to kill....broadside/double lung with just about any center fire bullet, and the hooves will go up. Hit em anywhere else, and you're rolling the dice, unless it's an absolute cannon....I've seen a moose live for days after two center-neck shots from a .300 magnum at close range...not pretty. Find some moose vitals diagrams online and study them obsessively...the heart can be significantly lower than you might expect, especially on a large-humped animal....

If you're looking for data, I've found that Barnes online data to be pretty spot on for everything I load from 250 Savage to 35 Whelen. I'd start there. IMR 4064 is what I use for the 168 TTSX in my 30-06. Not sure how it would work in 308 or 300 WSM.

I've gotten very good performance from the 180 Accubond in the .300WSM on a wide range of critters, including several moose.

I'd probably use the same bullet in the .308 if it came right down to it.

Another vote for barnes. I did some testing today with 175 LRX and CFE223 in my Tikka T3x 308 and was getting 2750 FPS in a 3/4" group.

However I did need to borrow my dad's 30-06 mag to feed it because it was 2.94" to get it 50 thou off the lands. It would work in a the standard mag if I made it a compressed load.

It would be convenient to run 165/168s in both, but the 180s and up really shine in the 300. If I were you, I'd call that 300 my moose rifle and load 180s or up. The 180 gr tsx really shoot well out of mine.
