300wsm vs 7prc vs 7rem mag?

When comparing calibers, I would consider availability of components and ammo. Which one can you find brass for easily? Can you find H1000 or RL 25 to reload for the PRC? Powder for a 7 mag might be easier to find. Can you find loaded ammo on a shelf at a local store if you needed it? IMO availability of powder, brass and ammo is becoming an important issue when deciding what caliber to buy...not just ballistics. They'll all kill big game. YMMV.

Can I get some advice, in my area 7 Mag rifles as well as ammo are substantially cheaper than 7prc. I don't reload so just looking for factory options here. For those that have more experience is the increased price of 7 prc worth it? I'm looking for an elk gun, but would probably become more of an all around big game gun, elk, deer, pronghorn, and sheep

With plans to reload, a buddy and I both recently opted out of the 7 PRC and went for 300 WSM’s. He went with a Tilkka T3X. This is my second rifle in the calibre. The 30 cal bullet selection, short action, 300 win mag performance, it’s an awesome choice and I feel like it’s gaining popularity again. I bought a like new Sako 85 Finnlight with a 1-11” twist 24” barrel and I’m going to load up some Barnes 165gr TTSX bullets in brand new Hornady brass. I expect it to achieve 3000fps or better. 9.6 pounds with scope and bipod. Very excited about this package for my next Elk hunt. In my opinion, marketing of other calibres decreased the popularity of the 300 wsm for really no reason, it is a great cartridge all around. I traded a 6.5 PRC off on this rifle.

In a long enough action with the right twist, the 300 WSM can still hang right with more recent offerings. I've owned 4 through the years. Few years ago I had a Tikka with 1:10. It loved the Hornady 212's. Sold it to a buddy who loved it and has put it to a lot of good use.

I wouldn't be as warm and fuzzy about a standard short action length 300 WSM as I would be about a 7PRC. I did have an A bolt 300 WSM 1:11 that did well with several 200 grn bullets at standard length, so not at all saying that it's not useful at standard length, just that it's not all it could be; whereas, the 7PRC connects all the dots right out of the gate.

Really comes down to planned target distances and, by extension, how important higher BC offerings are going to be. Out to 400, a 7mm RM with cheap ammo will get the job done just the same. Out further, the higher BC offerings of the 7PRC are going to offer more utility. Likewise, higher tier loaded ammo for each cartridge is going to be similarly priced. There's just not as many core loct, power point, blue box federal, etc loads available for the PRC at this time.

My fall back node is 2938 feet per second shooting .3” groups. But if I can accurately throw a 30 cal 175 grain pill at 3000+ feet per second I am one happy camper.

It’s the best load development I’ve ever done. I’m shooting 64gr of H4350, CCI250 primers, and Norma brass.

My bullets are getting about 50thou jump and they like that. I tried changing the seating depth but they like it.

Very interesting! I’m using H4350, magnum primers and Hornady Brass. 24” barrel. It’s a Sako 85 Finnlight actually. Range is at 2000’. I’m waiting on my modified case so right now I’m just loaded to what the mag will allow. Also very little bullet runout right out of the press with the LRX.

Brass life will most likely be little better with the prc because of the belt on the 7 rem mag making it harder to full length size down to the belt.(cases are known to bulge around belt)

I currently own a Christenson Mesa FFT in 7 prc and a Tikka 7 rem mag.
The 7 prc is a tack driver and the 7 mag is a tack driver.
The Tikka cycles alot smoother and is easier to stay in the gun and get follow up shots when need.

I ran the ballistics of the 180 eldm with non inflated muzzle velocity out of my 22" barrel mesa compared to the 162 eldm out of my 20" barrel 7 rem mag. At 800 yards the 180 has 100 ft lbs more energy and velocity is a wash. (I see no difference for hunting situations)

All of my buddies are Tikka fanboys so for the past 5 years I went against the grain and tinkered with 700 clones and savages. I always felt like there was something to be desired with every gun (feeding reliably, bolt throw angle, triggers freezing in - degree weather).

In my conclusion I have wasted thousands of dollars on hunting rifles and I finally ended up with a 243 win 8 twist Tikka and a 7 rem mag to finish off the set and I am satisfied. They just work how they are supposed to.

(Side note) I owned a 300 wsm in a Savage and loved the accuracy and the efficiency of that round but couldn't deal with the feeding. The second round in the clip would never feed reliably.

Old ass thread, I'm torn right now between a tikka superlite 7mag and the Christensen mesa 7prc. I know it's subjective but how's the recoil between them? Ill be unsuppressed unfortunately. Im leaning prc because I already run a 270,heavier bullets out of the prc make it different enough

You can get a Tikka 7prc now. Then order a Shoot2Hunt RokStok from Unknown Munitions. That's what I would do

What distance is lr? I have both a 300wsm and a 7prc. The 7 is better after around 650yds but the wsm is an awesome round. The wsm is a savage 110 UL in a stockys vg2 and has a Jard trigger. It has been a great gun for me people hate them but they function perfectly for me.
