Working up a load for South Dakota gun deer this fall. 125gr Sierra Pro Hunters. Haven't chronographed anything yet but these shoot really well with 44.4 grains of w748. 2.600 COAL to fit in my great grandfather's 1947 Savage model 99.

Also ordered some 130 gr TSXs to see if I can get those to shoot well. Should be pushing around 2800fps with a mild load of w748.
Anybody have the marbles tang sights for a 99 and have some feedback?

I have a 99 built in 1949. I bought 125 Nosler BT’s for it but haven’t ever worked them up. The heavy trigger and awkward safety turned me off a little bit. Also the weaver K4 has a terrible halo from delamination that has caused me to lose interest. I will get back to it. Eventually… following your thread though

Shoot it with irons! I was pretty surprised at the groups it will shoot at 100. Mine is not factory drilled/tapped for rings so I don't want to mess with drilling it out. At some point I'll put a tang peep and different front post on it.

I have heard that you can make a pretty sweet load with the 125BTs though.

There's a story about the front sight on this gun. My great grandfather bought it for midwest whitetail hunting but he took it out west on a pronghorn hunt, and apparently killed one while wearing dress shoes and slacks. Anyway, at some point he dropped the gun and mangled the front post, so he took it to a blacksmith who allegedly forged a new one out of a penny. All I know is it's crude but damn did he get the windage spot on.

I took the gun apart and realized that the forend serial number doesn't match the rifle, my guess is he banged that up too, probably when he broke the sight.
