Dont see much around this discussion already taking place as I searched. I am highly interested in understanding the notion that because a caliber is new, it is better than the previous one; especially when the previous one is not that much older, has higher performance, is in the same action, and is also readily available.

SAAMI cartridge to SAAMI cartridge, 30 Nosler outperforms 300 PRC in all parameters and seems to have fallen out of favor. Wonder why?

I hear you, Hornady does flood the market but as I search vendors and websites, there seems to be plenty of 30 N ammo and components available. Not to mention the Hornady components reputation for quality at times can be suspect.

Anything new seems to sell - more so now than ever - plastic gun parts are so common it’s accepted as normal. We’ve become fixated with new and ok with disposable items of all sorts - little thought is given to how long a cartridge will last, only how shiney the new toy is.

There’s no practical reason for most of the new cartridges to exist - simply updating twist rates and chambering to minimum rather than maximum saami dimensions would accomplish 99% of what’s happening.

If your basing it on sammi spec alone, the 300 prc wins. The sammi reamer sucks for a 30N. Throat it properly where the bullet needs to be and it will out perform the prc pretty easily.

30 Nosler is a hand loaders cartridge.
They erode the throat and you have to chace the lands around every 500 rounds.

300 prc will be much more consistent of a larger number of rounds.

Yeah I hear you, dont have enough rounds with my 300 PRC yet but I am on my second bbl with my 30N and so far in both bbls, I retain < .50 moa accuracy running it hard (95% full case) out to about 890 rounds. No chasing running 210 ablrs and Retumbo at 82 grains. I have one bbl at 1120 before replacement which I count as really good these days with a magnum caliber.
Has anyone got any data past 600 or 700 rounds with a 300 PRC?

I don’t get the need for any of this new stuff
For years I have been shooting a 300 wby with 200 gr AB at 3150. They shoot one hole groups
What will those do that the old wby cant
Anything is splitting hairs.

We had a CA carbon fiber barrel that went juuuusssstttt over 1500 rounds. By the end of the barrel life accuracy was still very, very good but velocity was down to 2400 FPS. We were having to rezero and chronograph/DOPE every 20 rounds to get through the end of the LF class. Even at 2400 FPS with correct DOPE it still worked fine at a mile. We pulled the barrel and it was comically eroded for the first third of the barrel.
Edit to add: the barrel was NEVER cleaned. Mostly shot 212 ELD-X and 225 ELD-M bullets at medium high pressures. Nothing at or over book max.

It’s all about the reamer specs…my opinion is neither is perfect but the prc is closer.

As mentioned, the factory 30N Saami freebore is too short but you lengthen it for a 215+ and it’s a great cartridge. The prc is a little tight at the .200 line and will cause clickers. Open it up a bit (AW reamer) and it’s perfect for the 215 as is.

I have the 30N and my buddy has the prc..,with our eyes closed we’d have a hard time telling them apart…I’m not standing on mine as both are running the 215’s at 2900 from a 22” barrel suppressed. They are devastating on game and I wouldn’t hesitate to hunt anything in North America with either one. If anything there are some things it’s just too big for.

I’ve killed Nilgai with mine and they are largely regarded as one of the toughest animals we have. I love hunting them and that is what I built it for…mine rarely gets shot unless preparing for a trip.

Forgot to mention…while the ADG brass has been good and Nosler brass is normally good, if I was doing it over…it’s tough to ignore the Lapua brass for the prc.
