If your interested in experimenting, load some 168’s with imr 4064 and you’ll see better velocity. I get 3k in multiple rifles with 24” barrels and 2850 from the same load in a 18” barrel.
I never hit pressure when I loaded with Staball and got to 2840 with my 19 inch tube. Have to see if my dad has some 4064 to play around with.

If a person is cutting to 18” why not just keep going to the legal minimum? Serious question.

I thought about it, and still might. My can was in jail for 9 months and I still hadn't made up my mind when I finally got my stamp about a month ago. One of my great concerns was balance intersected with reducing overall length and velocity. My gun shot great and carried great without the can.

Let us know about results, this is what I’m thinking of doing also.

My magnetospeed isn't reading velocity with the can on. Irritated. Until I decided I'm going to get a Xero today.

All I have on hand right now is two boxes of factory 178 ELDX, should be a good starting point.
FYI, factory Barnes 175 LRX was 2765 fps out of my barrel before it was cut.

You'll love the Xero, there's no comparison to a magneto speed.

My 30-06 is 20" and I get 2890 and 2840 with two different 175gr bullets. LRX and DRT respectively.

Yeah I don’t reload unfortunately. My family and I are living in our trailer the last 18 months building a house on a 65 acre parcel we bought last year. Suffice it to say - it’s cramped. Even with the enclosed shop section that’s our living room/kitchen/closet/workspace…My treat to myself is buying a press and diving into education when we are finally moved in. I do have 600 yards of steel plates on site that my son and I love…

I prefer to shoot non-lead so with my losses a reduced velocity results in a reduced minimum impact velocity range. I wasn’t expecting to get the speeds I did out of my hand loads either. So it’s a little bit of both. I would have done 17.5-18.5 were I to do it again. I ended up at 19 due to a miscommunication with the smith.

I’ve ran a suppressed 16” 30/06 for a while now and like it.

You might try another aux cord, changing battery’s, or getting the wand closer to the bore line. My magneto speed has been great and if it has ever not worked one of those 3 was the issue.

I already got my new toy, I am done fiddling with a muzzle mounted unit, cable, batteries and its morse code simon says button pressing.

I had been planning on a xero for a while and finally found the motivation I needed…not to mention it’ll work with hand guns and my bow.

Sometimes it is because I have a short stock on it and I need to keep the whole thing above the legal OAL for a rifle (26"). This really only comes into play with my single shots.
The other main reason is that when it comes to firearms, I am a bit of a non-conformist. I still love to hunt with single shot handguns. I have quite a few rifles too, but a lot of them are chambered for wildcats and odd-balls. The ones that aren't have some type of weird characteristic, most of the time it is a barrel that is 17.5" or 19.25" or 21". Just a personal thing.

Are you saying you get your barrels cut to strange lengths just because you want to be different???

What kind of suppressor do you run and do you know how much db reduction are you getting?
Nobody knows exactly how much decibel reduction they are getting unless they have the equipment to measure. Lots of companies advertise their tested decibel reduction so we can make educated guesses based on their data. Thunderbeast for example posts their data for each model.
