Well finally was able to lay hands on the 165 and 175 Matrix and got out this morning to do some testing on them. Load and climate data are on the target:

As you can see I hit the upper limit with the 165's and H1000. There were no pressure signs at 58gr, but at 59gr there was sticky extraction and extractor marks on the case head. I did not hit the max end with the 175's, but was pleasantly surprised to find that they would indeed stabilize out of my rifle. I stopped at 54gr as that is all I had loaded. Any guess as to where I might hit pressure signs?

I do not have a chrono so I cannot provide speeds on these yet. . .

The rifle is a Model 70 that has been worked over some. Barrel is a 1:10 twist McGowan, 24", SS, #2 Shilen contour installed by Sin Arms. Stock is a B&C ultralight medalist. Scope is a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42. Rifle as pictured is 9.5lbs:

Finally some velocity numbers for the 175's for you guys. By shooting at 300 and 400 yards and then working back I was able to calculate that the 175's over 58 gr of H1000 are leaving at about 2710 FPS, based on the average drop from 3 shot groups and using .680 BC. These maintained sub-MOA at 400 yards. I have not hit any pressure signs with these yet, so I may work them up more when I get another batch of bullets.

The 165's jumped up to 2 MOA at 400 yards, so the average drop was not a very precise way to calculate speed in my opinion. I was disappointed in these, and am out of them, so I'll concentrate on the 175's for now.

Here is the target:

165 Matrix

CA,
I just ordered an 8 twist from Hart and 200 pill from Matrix in the 165's. Should be home when I get there.

I tried these before in my Sendero with a 10 twist. I live at sea level so no joy.

Looking forward to getting it all put together.

Do you like the 175 over the 165?

Hey Shane,

An 8 twist Hart should be a great barrel! Be sure to post up your results when you can.

My rifle really seems to favor the 175s. They go 5/8 MOA and for some reason, I can push them at 2840 FPS (that is a chronographed number). That's only 20 FPS slower than a 7mm Rem Mag with the same bullet weight.

You can split a case neck, seat one long, close the bolt and that will push the bullet to the lands, then you can measure vs what your loading. Course, if it won't fit it the box, why bother. I'd be tempted to reduce OAL on that load a tad. Usually 2 together, one out wants a little more jump.

Any more info on testing to provide on these? I'm going to try the 165's out of my 1:10 twist 24" barrel, seems like most have had good luck with them.

Yup, I still run the 175gr over H1000 as my main hunting loading from this rifle. I have been able to chrono this load at 2840 FPS.

The only chance I was able to shoot these at long range, was at 912 yards shooting at a 12" gong. The wind was variable, and the shooter inexperienced, but it seemed like they were going about 1.5 MOA at that range.

The 175gr has been discontinued now for a while. The 165gr may well shoot great for you!

Berger just announced their 170gr bullet too though, so they might be worth a shot!
