.270 on whitetail - short range

What bullet were you using? 130g 270 loads have been killing deer for over 100 years.

They were Norma Whitetail 130gr soft points. I never had an issue with 130gr bullets before. I was surprised the bullet came apart like that so fast.

Federal Premium 130 grain was my favorite 270 round for years. Core locks work well too.

I’ve killed deer inside of 40 yds out to 300 yds with the 130gr barnes ttsx, never recovered a bullet but the results were there and my 270 really likes the barnes bullets. My 2nd choice would be the partitions, also very deadly but since switching to ttsx I haven’t had a reason to go back.

I can't remember the number of deer I've killed with that combo and I've never had a partition not do the job when put where it is supposed to go regardless of distance. Switched to 130 gr partitions in 2020 when I ran out of ammo and they have done the same. Killed 5 elk with the old 270 using the 150 gr partitions, with the longest shot being 350 yards before I convince myself that I needed a 300 wsm.

Hammer Hunter 117 grain. Close to far they will drop with full penetration.

What would you suggest for a .270 WIN whitetail round from 20-200 yards? Preferably something that will stay together at close range and pass through. Hornady Interlock and the Nosler Partition 130’s come to mind. Any suggestions?

I shoot just plain Jane federal powershoks...shoots 3/4 to 1 in out of my 80s rem 700 bdl 270...ain't ever lost 1 most drop ...but hell that's a 270 win for ya

Using 140 gr Hornady Interlock BTSP (2735) on whitetail. Loaded to ~2900 fps. They have performed very good for me.

Federal 136gr terminal ascent for me. Dropped a buck at 330 yards and a doe at 16 yards. Both dropped and were not shoulder or spine shot.

I have two .270’s, a Sako 85 and a Tikka. Having owned them for multiple years, have tried a variety of factory loads. Both of my rifles prefer 140 gr bullets, usually shoot just under MOA with preferred loads. My Tikka likes Federal Premium 140 accubond and the Sako prefers Nosler 140 gr ballistic tip factory load. As a backup, both rifles shoot Fed Premium 130 gr Trophy Copper well also. Bullet performance is excellent with all 3 loads. Consistent pass thrus. The .270 is an excellent round for whitetails. Due to local terrain my shots are limited to 300 yds or so, but given the accuracy of my rifles, wouldn’t hesitate to attempt a longer shot.

My father and I have been shooting .270s for over 30 years. I handload 130 grain nosler ballistic yellow tips. We have killed whitetails past 400 yards no problem with this caliber and bullet. Also took a big muley in montana. Same bullet. , if you hit the shoulder there not going anywhere but your gonna lose some grind. Flat shooting and fast.

I realize this is a 4 year old thread, however Remington 150gr RN CoreLokts were what I started with in 270. Never failed to kill quickly and exited better than 90% of the time. Very reliable, 20 feet to 275 yards. Just my observations. I hope you found a winner for your setup.

Have used a 270 for whitys for years.
My favorite bullet for them is a Winchester 130gr Silvertips.
They quit making them for a while and they are starting to seep back in.
Need to buy a few more boxes of them.
My Howa 1500 shoots them about 3/4 MOA at 100 with them.

Shot a nice 8 at about 70 yards a few years ago. Was a small entry and the exit was about the size of a silver dollar. Deer took about 5 steps

My go to factory load is the 150 grain Power Point from Winchester because I like Winchester brass better than Remington. However I have shot a lot of deer with it and a couple elk. Works perfectly every time.
