I've a chance at an undrilled sporterized Mauser 98 in .257 for $300 i'm trying like hell to find a reason to NOT buy it & slap it in some beautiful walnut with a period scope.

Why would I want this thing? What's it good for?

I have never even seen a Bob, let alone shot one.....

Not obsolete! Both my kiddos shoot deer with bobs and I use one too!!! Great deer Round! Love those old mausers. Good luck!

A friend of mine bought one brand new last year when Ruger made a run of #1s with manchlister stocks. And I think Kimber Chambers rifles in 257 Roberts as well.... maybe it's making a comeback!

As long as it is not wrecked in some way..... that is the kind of rifle you wouldn't ever regret buying. .257 Bob is waaay underrated by "modern hunters" and the '98, weeeelllll..... everyone knows that action is garbage. Actually, you will probably regret another project and should send it my way 😉

The 257 Roberts is a great chambering. In modern rifles, you can throw away the published load data and run 'em on up in pressure. My 257 is my favorite rifle,

Do it. There's a "bob" in my safe right now that my father uses. I used one when I was younger. And I currently use a .257 weatherby magnum. Love the caliber. Always have. Fantastic for whitetails.

Welp, I got her picked up this afternoon & it's exactly as three-hundred-dollarey as you'd expect for an old sporterized gun.
I haven't pulled it down yet, but I can say that the aftermarket trigger is superb! Bore is pristine & I believe it to be a 1:9 twist.
It has a promising future.....

What kind of chassis are you going to drop it in? Brake or silencer? hehehehehe

In all seriousness, or maybe not, are you going to put that German action in English or French walnut? I'd vote for Oregon Myrtle, or flame maple, but I'm into oddball stuff sometimes.
