I have the .223 use to hunt all kinds of games. for bear i'd rather go for .308 or a .44 rifle as i am bore experience with both caliber.

Having used both a 44 mag rifle and a 223 on bigger bears at under 10 feet of distance from my feet to theirs, I am 100% of the time going with the 223 and an 88 or 77 over ANY offering in a pistol cartridge.

After raising hogs for a number of years, I wouldn’t be especially enthusiastic about sticking one on the ground in a one on one scrap.

Bears however, hand to paw combat is an adrenaline rush if you have a spear.

Re: practice ammo, I've been shooting Norma Golden Target Match 77gr SMK's but I'm down to 80 rounds left of the 400 I bought last fall at $0.90/rd. Not seeing any on Ammoseek currently. I shot 152 over the chrono, average 2633.5 FPS with 24.9 SD, 127.7 ES.

Black Hills 77gr TMK has been 2735.7 FPS average with 25.4 SD and 71 ES over 75 shots over the chrono.

Any recommendations on these options for loaded SMK's?

Remington Premier, $0.75/rd
PMC X-TAC, $1.03/rd
Federal Gold, $1.25/rd

That's what I'm seeing so far that I can confirm uses the SMK.

Follow up on the Remington Premier Match 77 SMK. Initial impressions: not sure my Tikka likes it. But it zero's the same as the BH 77 TMK at least, the MV is closer, and no heavy bolt lift like I was getting with the Norma.

I just tried the Bone Frog 77 TMK 5.56 ammo in a Weatherby 307 223 and I blew primers in the first two rounds. Velocity was almost 2900 fps out of a 20 in barrel. Damaged my firing pin though. I will be trying them in my AR 15 5.56, but they are spicy with soft primers. I am getting 2760 ish out my handloaded 77 tmk loads with 23.3 grains of XBR and starline brass.

I’ve used bonefrog in my AR. It wasn’t bad, grouped as good as I could expect it to, but it was about 3” higher than my Freedom Munitions 77gr OTM and lake city 77gr OTM.

Generally, yes. But I've never seen a bonded bullet OR a cup and core bullet of any type expand more than a solid copper 62grn Maker TRex. This one at over 200 yards. This doesn't mean that the TRex kill better than say the 77TMK but it does demonstrate that solid copper bullets can perform well in the traditional sense.
And in the non traditional sense the way that Hammer Hunter (60 grn .223 in my case) bullets shed their petals and create churn demonstrates that copper bullets can actually cause exceptional tissue damage.

^all of these. The 73gr or any of the ELD-M Hornady Match would be what I'd look for but there's an incredible amount of options for the 55gr stuff, too many to even list. If you want to avoid meat damage might could shoot something bonded at them like a Federal Fusion on the cheap, we just use our Gold Dots for hogs for example. Try some different types of ammo to see what your rifle shoots best.

If he is hunting Roe deer, he is likely not in North America, so the availability of those recommendations is probably very limited.

Correct, I'm in Europe and availability of factory hunting approved ammo (needs to be an expanding bullet) has been very limited apart from that Hornady Critical defense 55gr. However I just saw that they have started selling the Federal Fusion SP 62gr so I might try that instead then. Thanks guys.

Fusion will definitely get the job done, hopefully it shoots well in your rifle.

Have you shot .556 out of that rifle? That is drastically different than what I’ve seen from the first few boxes (I would assume same lot as it just came out). I wouldn’t hesitate to call the owner of Bone Frog, very approachable guy.
