So by your conclusion the only way a bullet can fail is by not having a dead animal? If that is the case it would be pretty hard to ever prove a bullet failure. I dont necessarily disagree with that, but if the animal was not found dead it could be said that it was just a bad shot.

More and more people are recording their hunts, either with cameras, or in many cases, guys just pulling out a phone when their partner is shooting at an animal. So it’s not unreasonable to think, if these bullet failures are common, someone has caught a well placed shot on film, and then been able to show the animal did not die nearby.

Many videos exist showing small caliber successes; but I don’t think anyone has shown a video of good bullet placement, followed by “bullet failure” resulting in a live animal running off.

Didnt have big enough wound channel. Could of been bullet itself idk. 88 eldm. Either way elk acted like nothing happened.

Idk ive killed a lot of elk. Seen even more kiled. All various guns bullets ect. Ill say this 30 cal bigger has done better job consistently. Animals act different when hit ect. Obviously not every animal. You cant fix bad shot placement.
That being said ill be testing some mono 70gr out of same gun hopefully on some caribou if i see any on my moose hunt. Maybe audad and mule deer in Mexico.

I’m a pretty newby hunter, but recently jumped on the 22cm train. Plan on using it for mule deer in idaho 25’, getting a feel for the limits. I do appreciate the feedback and will be following along for sure.

Is your total personal experience with 22cals the one elk that you didn’t finish with it?

22cm doesnt 1-shot an elk with bad shot placement, never use it again...But 4x 250g bullets "perfectly placed" to the chest from the .30 magnum to put down an elk is totally acceptable...

How much bigger? I’m wondering how far you can miss where you’re aiming at with a “bigger bullet” in your experience

Bigger bullets create more recoil which leads to worse shot placement.

Worse shot placement leads to needing a larger wound channel to hit something vital.

I’m so afraid of a 7 mag I have to wait until two bulls stand next to each other so when a gigantic flinch causes a mis on one bull it will hit the other.

Even though playing Slug Bug with a grade school girl puts more pressure on a shoulder than a belted mag, shooting it makes my tummy hurt and I throw up so there’s no chance for a second shot.

You can always tell which 270 shooter spars at a MMA gym - that tiny pop to the shoulder makes them try to tap out every time.
