got a 22 Creed build about to start … will be a rebarrel of a R700 action currently rocking a varmint profile Shilen 1:12 22-250 (too heavy and fast twist to do anything I want). I’m looking for the “easy button” specs for the build. Will be a do-all hunting / shooting rifle and shot by my girls as they grow into it.

Barrel length: pretty set on 18” but open to input.

Barrel profile (stainless and will be suppressed): I’m thinking heavy sporter… what’s the best?

Barrel maker: probably preferred barrels…? Maybe Brux. What’s the best bang for buck?

Twist rate: 1:7.5 seems a do-all. True?

Load recipe: will run a heavy ELDM and/or 77TMK, most likely. What’s the “ole reliable” powder / recipe for the 22 creed? Best brass?

For fun, it’ll be topped with a SWFA 3-15 on a pic rail and will eventually sit in a Stocky VG stock.

Check out the 22CM thread. There's a bunch of info, 136 pages in fact.

I’m several pages in… of the 136. Great reading but at the rate I’m going, I’ll have this thing spec’s by February. Hoping someone had done the “don’t want to read ### pages? Here’s the highlights” for the 22 CM thread…

I'd take a look at a 16". I'm getting 2931 with 88 grain eldms.

You're on the right track going to a 22 Creed. That's what I set my daughters up with. It's so close to a 6 and maybe a tad faster. No cal restrictions in Montana. Plenty for elk.

Only problem with it is it's so much fun to shoot! "Dad can I shoot it now?!" "One more kiddo..." haha

I'd rather buy a barrel once a year than have my kids get scoped or start flinching. Which was happening with the 6.5 creed pipe.

Not sure how old your kids are but I’d go with something like a .750 taperless profile if the kids will be handling it in the near future. Lighter profile than a varmint but still heavy enough to hang 5/8x24 threads if you needed to.

16.5-18 barrel length is just right IMO.

Everything else mentioned already is agree with also. Get it built and go shoot!

Thanks all on the dialogue on this!

On the barrel profile... curious why the heavier profile is preferred? If I recall correctly, Tikka barrels are in the sporter diameter range with the benefit of smaller profile being a touch of weight savings.

I've got a 5/8" and 1/2" thread adapter for my suppressor so I do no see that as a problem but recognize I might be missing something...

Just had an idea pop in my head... has anyone ever installed a pre-fit barrel on a Sauer 100 action?

na, bad idea.

If it were me I'd grab a criterion remage barrel from James at NSS. Order today and be shooting next week. You'd be looking at 450ish for the barrel chambered, cut, and threaded.
He'd need a nut, go-gauge, and maybe a wrench too but this is by far the easiest option. However, a thinner profile will likely be better for what he's looking for. IME, they stock a bunch of MTU and straight taper barrels for comp shooting but not a ton for hunting rifles. Regardless, top notch service. A lot of my Zermatts have come from there.

The taperless 750 isn't that heavy. Lighter than a typical heavy sporter like a bartlein #3. A little extra weight is easier to shoot, doesn't heat up quite as fast. Really anywhere from Tikka lite to the 750 taperless is going to be pretty handy in an 18" barrel. 750 taperless gives you enough shoulder for 5/8 threads too. 1/2" threads are fine but If I could snap my fingers and make all my barrels 5/8" i would just for simplicity with muzzle devices. I also like more metal at the muzzle end of the barrel.

I’m Using a Tikka action. I shoot a 24” carbon barrel. I like speed! Haven’t got on the short barrel train yet. Longer barrels are faster and quieter .

For me, it's a 7.5"tw 18" threaded PPB Hybrid Lite barrel. Next barrel might be a 16". Mine likes the 80ELDX, 77TMK, and 80ELDM in that order. You can see my recent load data on the 22 Creedmoor link.

I had a 1/2" adapter come off and is now stuck in the suppressor, which makes that can a dedicated 1/2" thread only. Therefore, I switched to the UM adapter and removal tool.

If you don’t plan on shooting heavier than the 88 ELDM, then a 1:8 works well. My 1:7.5 will stabilize the 95 SMK.

Barrel length: 18-20”.
