Back to back years with an opening day bird on Alabama public land. This little Tristar .410 is a hoot to hunt with. Went out the night prior to listen for birds roosting where I ran into a big flock during deer season. Heard a faint gobble after I called in a few owls who were not shy. Got in early to listen the next day and happened to place that faint gobble correctly and was within 100 yards after his first gobble. The quietest subtle tree yelps from me and waited patiently for fly down. He gobbled on the limb for 20 minutes which is always fun. After I heard him on the ground I yelped a few times with some scratching. Few minutes later and a hen was in a full sprint coming by me. In tow was this beautiful gobbler. He stopped in a window and my 9.5 hand load TSS made short work of him at 28 yards. I’ve found I’ve been more successful without decoys. Best of luck out there this year.

Illinois youth season public land. Hiked just under a mile to loop around where we thought they’d roost. Worked two off the roost that slipped us but ended up getting on one. We head to Kentucky next weekend and our Indians season opens in a few weeks so hopefully just getting started! Epic morning and thankful to spend a morning in the woods him!

Youth season here in IL. Private land, CVA Spur .410 with Federal TSS. This bird was already in the field when we found him so no decoys at first. We had a hill and some good cover to get to maybe 200 yards. He had some hens and when I’d call, he’d partially come then turn around he saw no turkeys associated with the calls. When he went into the timber I snuck back down the hill to my truck and got my strutter decoy. I ran back up and quickly got it set on the field edge. When he came back out and I started calling again, he saw that decoy and came on a string. He put on a show drumming and beating up my decoy until my son hosed him. Maybe a 30 yard shot.

This last Saturday was opening morning and my first time turkey hunting went with a buddy that has experience on public land and it was a zoo. Saw more hunters than opening day of deer season. No luck.
It stormed pretty hard the last couple days and today was clear. We went back up with no pressure today and dropped my first turkey.

Pops and I doubled on April Fools’ Day and again this morning. My wife is very happy that I don’t have a valid tag until 4/15.

Got my 12 year old his first bird Sunday, called his and 6 other Jakes off the roost to 10 yards. Shooting a Winchester 1300 20ga with TSS shells. Washington State youth season, public land.

Boy connected in KY over the weekend. Last year of the youth season for him...came down to the wire!

Easter Sunday and the parking lot on Public was surprisingly empty at 5am. Decided to let the boy sleep and still no one arrived by 6am when decided to head in.

Ever have one of those days where it feels like you can’t do anything right? Bumped birds off the roost, bumped birds headed to other birds, bumped those birds, headed to another gobble way far off that confirmed initial suspicions that was across an un-crossable river…..to then hear that bird get whacked with an excited kid celebrating….we did our part to educate them, lol.

Finally, 8 miles into the day we got on one we could do something with at 1215. Hardly gobbled, but (2) moves later at 1245 finally came in with a lone hen.

20 ga Remington youth, 1 5/8 oz #9 tss hand loads. Self made 3 reed (0.003 over (2) prof) snake tongue cut diaphragm, no decoy, public land. 9.5” beard, 1 1/8” spurs.. no weight, but big heavy bird guessing went north of 22#. Going to need a new display board.

First Osceola. Public land, what a pain in the ass Even though I’m in FL somehow I still ended up with a 3 mile pack out!
I guess that makes a slam or grand slam? I haven’t gotten a Gould’s, should draw that in another 15-20 years!
