Kestrel 2400 wind meter
Spotter: Vortex Razor Gen1 16-48x65mm w/ magview adapter

Shot 1: HIT (barely)
Sat, 06/06/26
511 yds, 0-5 mph wind typically straight away. Rifle tends to shoot 0.75-1 MOA high when cold, so I dialed 6.75 MOA
Trigger press wasn’t great, caught me by surprise slightly, still acclimating to an lighter trigger weight on this tigger tech

Shot 2: HIT
Mon, 06/08/26
511 yds, same as day 1, 0-4 mph wind mostly straight away, slight gust at times but minimal, held about 1 MOA left adjusting from the previous impact which was right
Trigger press felt good, hit in the upper left quadrant, felt like my elevation is pretty dialed but need to practice the fundamentals more since I appear to be inconsistent LT/RT. Overall, this was a great challenge and I feel much more confident hitting on game out to this distance, but really showed me that continued practice is needed.

Apologies for the poor footage and shooting paper at distance, not very easy to spot impacts! This challenge is late enough in the spring that shooting steel in the dry tall grass probably isn’t a smart move

I got out and shot this evening- I am going to call my MER at 700 yards this year due to feeling like that is going to be as far as I can shoot accurately with a new lower power scope. I am shooting a Mountain Forged 7 SAUM on a long action throated for 190’s. shooting 168 grain McGuire Ballistics copper rose bullets at 2975 fps MV, with an Unknown Suppressors OG-L and a salmon river solutions suppressor brake- MDT Mountain Bipod. Scope is a 2.5-10 Leupold Mark 4HD FFP with the TMR mil reticle . Today I shot prone at 676 yards. I hung 2 targets while I was doing it, the left target being a 10” circle. I had 4-5 MPH winds coming from about 3:30, but it was a bit shifty down range. I dialed 2.9 Mils and held about 2/10ths right and had a first round impact. My impact was about 2” right of center but my elevation was pretty centered up. I always enjoy this challenge starting and look forward to moving forward to day # 2. I am working on attaching the video link now, hopefully I do it right. I will attach some pictures as well.

Day 2 shot # 2. Got up and shot early to try to beat the mirage but still had a fair amount of mirage- 676 yards, I just barely stayed on the plate today, I was fighting mirage pretty bad with a 10x scope. But I was able to qualify to move on to my max MER of 700 yards.

Shot #3 this morning at 700 yards- between the mirage and the 10x scope with a heavy reticle this is absolutely my MER- There was very little wind to deal with. I was actually surprised when I saw the impact because I wasnt super confident in the shot just due to what everything looked like through the scope. I was able to keep it on the plate, though it was just a touch low and a touch right

Ha, I’ll do my best.

The gear:
New 6GT Barrel on an old t3 action. 18”.
Seems to be doing well with 116 TMK and 33gr Varget. Velocity is stabilizing between 2725-2736 fps.
Was hoping I’d have my Rokstok lite before the challenge. Unfortunately not yet. So the gun sits in a krg bravo, and has a 4-16 mil-r atacr for glass. OG65 rounds out the package. Everything but the barrel was hunted last fall.

I sewed myself an XL denim game changer, filled with about 2lbs of git-lite.
Rangefinder: Revic Binos.

MER 740ish shooting 610 yards qualifying for MER.

Tikka 300 WSM with 200.20x Bergers at 2714 fps in a warrantied Rokstok, Maven RS1.2 Mil. Seekins break for now will ultimately have a US Reaper and their new break.
Gunwerks Elevate 2.0 Bipod (Spartan Javelin in all previous years)
Molinator and Jellyfish rear bags, I've shot my past 2 elk with these bags and a deer last year with them.

50 degrees on the Mountain, mostly shooting through shade but I was in the sun from shooting location. I didn't hold any wind and when I started the video it was still, by the time I shot there was just a little breeze left to right, more of a downward thermal. Spin drift was 0.1 mil I ignored but with a little wind I should have held left of Center. Shot execution felt great, and I watched the impact in my scope, saw the plate rock right, just couldn't quite see the impact point. Used shooter for my ballistic app, it called for 3.8 Mil up.

Plate is 13" wide by 11.5" tall with a 10" diameter white circle painted

Day 2 Hit! 52 degrees I was a little earlier so the sun hadn't come over the ridge yet and video quality was better. Can see the trace and impact. Had more wind/downdraft so I held 0.3-0.4 Mil left. My 0.5 hash was just inside the right edge of the 10" painted circle and my center dot on the Maven RS1.2 was off the left edge of the 10" painted circle entirely. Might have held a little much wind but hit is a hit and I would say elevation was exactly where my cross hair was when the shot broke. Moving out to 740 MER for day 3!

Day 2
IMG_9601[1].PNGIMG_9604[1].JPG

Day 3, not my best shot and a miss
54 degrees very slight downdraft and in the video you can see stuff in the air drifting by left to right. I couldn't see that in my scope but could feel a little breeze or air movement at times. Held about 0.3 Mil left. I was fighting my position sloping down and right while trying to aim up to the target. Thought I had it but I wasn't solid enough on the rear support, I didn't loose sight of the target at the shot but I wasn't right on like I should have been if recoil was managed correctly. Shot was good left right and barely missed the top of the plate and rubber straps I use to hang it, but had them wired to rebar pounded in the bank.

Day 4
60 degrees and some light clouds which held the sun back for me. Had a very slight downdraft but not as much as day 3. I held my center dot inside the left edge of the 10" circle. Had my bipod alot higher today which let me get the rifle butt solid and square on my shoulder. Day 3 I realized the bipod was low, I was fighting it and the butt was only touching at the top and it slid under my shoulder at the shot.
Day 4 shot was excellent. Immediately settled back on target and my cross hair was back on the 10" circle when the bullet impacted.

Great challenge, I have more work to do.

Going for an MER 800 yds.

Rifle is a medium Bighorn Origin with an 18” Bartlein carbon barrel chambered by SJA in 6.5 prc. XLR Magnesium, MDT mountain bipod, Scythe (I know, I know), scope is a Leupold mk4 off my NRL Hunter rifle until my NX6 or S2H gets here. We’ll see which is first lol. I’ll be using my sig kilo 8k for my solutions but I won’t be using my kestrel or inputting wind into the RF purposefully. Just want to use it for my elevation and continue to call wind intuitively.

Shooting a Berger 156 at 2900 fps

Shooting will be done prone with a bipod and a home sewn rear bag that is spec lite and cordura around 1.9 oz.

Tried to push myself and shoot the qualifiers on an 8” I have on a t post near my house.

Qualifier 1: 611yds. Hit (barely). Shot first thing early morning and wind conditions were calm, shooting in a canyon looks like there was some wind up higher in the drainage. Good practice.

Qualifier 2: 614 yds. Hit. Wind was pretty sporadic and noticed it moving a good bit above where I was shooting from in the drainage. Solid impact holding .7 mils left.

MER Day 1: 803 yds. Hit. Wind was strong but consistent. Decided for the actual shots to take my portable target up a different drainage each day to add some realism. Held .6 mils right.

IMG_4821.jpeg
With wind blowing I couldn’t hear the impact in the electronic muffs and couldn’t see it very well on the plate and questioned if I missed initially though I watched it drop in. I assume the small impact was from the fresh paint still drying. Either way I was relieved.

MER Day 2 801 yds. Hit. Setup in a different drainage as a few days ago. Ended up having similar wind and holding .7ish right. Had to set up a modified prone with bipod extended to clear some of the brush. Had a hair larger wobble zone but stayed on target nonetheless.

IMG_4824.jpeg

This challenge was awesome. I think next time I will take my steel plate and backpack into some mountains similar to many of my hunting areas. That would be pretty special and could truly setup and mimic some specific scenarios. Biggest takeaway for me was that in all reality if you had some true adrenaline and was more limited on time that MER shrinks. I think next year I will try to give myself a time restraint and maybe do something prior to the shot to have an elevated heart rate.

My MER for this gun is where I’m comfortable with for minimum impact speed… TLDR: 900 Yards.

I will be shooting 2 shots in Wyoming in 2 different spots that I’ve never shot before. If I’m successful with both qualifiers I will shoot 2 more in Arizona in 2 locations that I’ve never shot before.

The density altitude effecting the terminal range will vary quite a bit between the two different states, with today’s shot being at 5,500 DA; and where I plan to shoot in AZ having potential for around 9,000 DA.

I’ll split the difference in DA and with this Tikka 6 Creed shooting 116 TMKs out of a supressed 16” barrel…

I’ll call my MER at 900 Yards.

Target:

IMG_4508.jpeg

Rifle:

Tikka 6 Creed. Maven RS1.2 Scope. UM Low Rings. Rokstok. US Reaper 6.5 Supressor. 16” PBB 7.5 Twist. Shooting 116 TMKs with a hunting/wet safe load at 2725 average.

Shot 1 Distance/Shot Location/Shooting Position:

IMG_4510.jpeg

578 Yards
.

I set the gong up on a “shelf” where a stream cuts a small drainage below, with rolling prairie hills up above. I stacked two coolers with my phone on top recording the gong during the shot. The phone and coolers are 75 yards in front of the gong and slightly off to the side. Pretty insane to hear how quickly that bullet gets to the gong.

I shot prone off my backpack with my bino harness as my rear rest.

Video and Shot Result:

IMG_4511.jpeg

———————————————————————

Shot 2:

608 Yards.

Same rifle and load of 116 TMKs.

Wind was swirling and a bit unpredictable with decent lulls and then seemingly out of nowhere 15- 20 MPH blasts from what felt like anywhere from 11 o clock to 2 o clock. Trees at the target showed unpredictable wind information, same with the tall grass at shot mid point.

Waited for a lull and held dead center with 3.8 MILs dialed into the scope.

This shot was a seated position, with long leg Spartan bipod up front and my backpack as the rear support (by far my most common hunting shooting position).

Video and Shot Result:

IMG_4548.jpeg

———————————————————————

Shot 3:

886 Yards.

Same rifle and load of 116 TMKs. 6 states and over 3,000 miles in the backseat of my pickup since the last shot.

Back in AZ and took the kids out for a Jeep cruise and hike. Went to a new area of BLM with some cool knobs and washes and saw a knob that looked like it would be good to setup the gong on.

We hiked to the top and hung the gong from a palo
verde tree then hiked back down to the Jeep and drove back down the wash until we reached a bit of a smaller knob and clearing.

Great view of the gong and the range ended up being 886 yards.

Snapped a photo of the shot setup and then set the iPhone camera in my phoneskope case and started recording video as I got setup, re-ranged the target, ear pro in, setup the garmin, just took my sweet ass time and made sure the kids were safe.

In doing all of that I didn’t realize that the phone had shut itself down into overheat mode and it did not record the video. 102 degrees, in direct sun, and stuck in a hot black phoneskope case… I should have known because that happens all the time here in AZ summers.

IMG_4636.png

I shot from the prone position using my backpack as a front rest and my bino harness as a rear rest.

There was next to zero wind this evening which is uncommon for this area in general.

IMG_4639.jpeg

Shot Result:

I dialed 6.9 MILs and held 0.2ish MILs left. The shot was a good hit, touching shot 1 near the top of the gong.

IMG_4638.jpeg

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shot 4:

913 Yards.

Same gun and ammo as the other shots. I shot prone off my pack using my bino harness as the rear rest.

While today was a miss on the 10” gong I had a ton of fun setting up this shot at 913 yards. Little coues deer target measuring just 34” from the ground to the top of the back. His other antler broke off during the jeep ride out.

IMG_4720.jpeg

From the shooing position he was quartering towards and facing downhill on a slight angle. He had some brush about 300 yards in front of him obscuring but not affecting the shot. Sun was blaring into me requiring a jacket to be placed over my head to be able to see the deer through the scope.

IMG_4724.jpeg

Shooting across a wash bottom up to the knob and it just felt exactly like a shot on an animal in the mountains. Awkward, different wind at target versus shooting position, bad lighting, animal blending into terrain, animal facing downhill and not perfectly broadside, rocks digging into my belly…

It was an awesome practice shot and while the gong wasn’t hit, it’s likely a mortally wounded coues deer.

IMG_4725.JPG

I am going to try for a mer of 650 yards.

Tikka T3x .223, factory barrel, factory stock, free floated, raised the recoil pad and installed an adjustable cheek riser. Bonded srs rail, seekins rings, and an swfa 10x.

Shooting prone off of my pack with a molinator and an lswild pack pillow for a rear bag.
IMG_9127.jpeg

Day one - hit @ 580 yards

Sorry for the long video, cant figure out how to edit it shorter in length.IMG_9129.jpeg

Day 2
Same shot, same distance, different conditions. Today the wind was blowing about 4-5 mph and building up to gusts of 10-12 and switching directions alot. I was on the shot for over 2 minutes waiting for the stronger gusts to settle down. I held right edge and hit top right edge at about 1-2 o’clock. What a relief.

Shot prone over my pack with a molinator and the lswild packpillow as a rear bag. Today I brought my hunting shooters matt as it was wet out.
IMG_9133.jpegIMG_9134.jpeg

Day 3
Today was a swing and a miss. I set up @ 656 yards, seated with my tripod out front with the lswild pack pillow on top and hugging my pack for a rear support. Shot felt good, I didn’t dial. The dejection is real. I drove home feeling like I screwed up on a big buck.

Day 4
Another swing and a miss. 656 yards is definitely outside my comfort zone and beyond my mer. But thats what this is all about right? Challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone? It was definitely eye opening how 80 more yards completely tripped me up. I shot this one prone over my pack with the molinator and the lswild pack pillow for a rear support. IMG_9173.jpeg

I just got this can last week and haven't gotten a chance to shoot much past 100 yards yet after chopping another 2" off the barrel. I changed my quick drop calculation from +.2 to +.3 and sent it. The wind was blowing from left to right, mostly lightly but occasionally gusting a little. I held ~2" left of center and hit the left edge.

HIT: Shot #1:

Infil and Target Placement: After work, I hiked into some public land with my worthless golden doodle. It’s nor golden and doesn’t retrieve. Anyways in one spot I gained a little over 1000 feet elevation in a mile. Once up we started ranging possible target locations eventually settling on a spot just below a ridgeline. With the target in place at 576 yards, we followed the ridgeline to establish our firing position. Settled on a spot and broke out dinner for the both of us. After dinner, it was go time!

Shot Conditions: Partly cloudy, 65F, elevation around 3k MSL. The wind has steadily increased from when we first got up there and now was generally a full value from left to right in what I estimated at 4-6 mph at my position. Didn’t have much vegetation at the target location so I was using heat mirage to try and estimate it at distance. I thought it was more than where it was at my position, so leaned in with a bold wind call. Ugh, I was nervous to break the shot!

The Shot: For the shot, I elected for bipod front and bag rear, dialed 3.2 and held .7 left for wind and broke the shot. So relieved for a hit.

IMG_2782.jpeg

Reflections: Two come to mind. First, these stinking CBCs have me dry firing and over analyzing. I need to follow the succinct shot process of IDing the target, ranging, dialing, building a position, wind call, shot execution, and respond to downrange feedback.

IMG_2800.jpeg

Second, and not related to shooting…as I went to retrieve the steel and pack it back down off the mountain, I was greeted by three young Dall sheep popping up atop the mountain behind me. So cool and a great way to end the day.

IMG_2792.jpeg

HIT: Shot #2:

Infil and Target Placement: After working the day, got home and packed up with the intention to shoot a new spot. After driving to my primary, alternate, and contingency spots were all unsuitable for a variety of reason, I ended up at my final location. Walked down and set the target in place at 598 yards then back to the firing position. It was now about 9:30pm and thank the good Lord for long Alaskan summer nights- plenty of daylight.

Shot Conditions: Cloudy, 60F, light and intermittent rain, elevation around 500ft MSL. The target location was pretty sheltered from the wind. I couldn’t feel any at the target. At the firing position, I had a light and recurrent ½ value wind for what I’d estimate 2 mph. Putting my reflections from Shot #1 into action, I tried to follow the process deliberately, and quickly. After the artificiality of getting the digiscoping video running, build a prone position only to see I was too low. Needing to get higher, I build a new position.

The Shot: For the shot, I elected for tripod front and backpack rear, dialed 3.4 and held .1 left for spindrift and broke the shot. Grateful for the hit.

IMG_2813.jpeg

Reflections: This was a very similar shot set up a blacktail I killed on Kodiak last year- tripod front and backpack rear to get the needed height above the brush. Wobble zone was acceptable on this shot but I could have brought the backpack closer to better consume the deadspace between my body and the weapon.

HIT: Shot #3:

Infil and Target Placement: Was out on an overnight bear hunting trip / testing some different gear (@Marbles thanks!). With no cold bore shot on a bear, I found a spot along my way back to set up. Got the target set up 659 yards and went back to the firing position.

Shot Conditions: Cloudy, 52F, elevation around 1,400ft MSL. The wind 8-12 mph, and occasionally died off to 3mph, or gusted to 15mph +. Thank that the way I had to lay out the target and firing position this was essentially a 12 o'clock "in yo face!" wind. Lots of adjacent vegetation to observe wind.

The Shot: For the shot, I wanted to shoot a different position than the previous two shots. Went with the tried and true backpack front and bino rear a really stable prone supported position. I dialed 3.9 and favored slightly left of the pink center for a .1~.2 for spindrift, shot, and watched impact.

1781459887493.jpeg
1781459913674.jpeg

Reflections: The recent Exo Mtn Gear podcast episode 584 with @Mark at EXO and Paul Schommer was on my mind. With the target in place, I walked back and thought about building a position, breathe control, then execution. I wasn't coming in from a max effort ski lap but rather sloshing through mud, and over deadfall. When I went for this shot, I felt confident- confident because the output of the process is a hit. I waited for the wind to lay down a bit, followed the process and watched splash in my reticle. Shot #1 I was so outcome focused- I wanted the hit so I dry fired two dozen times. Shot #3 felt the easiest, and I suspect it's because I'm more process focused.

MISS: Shot #4:

Infil and Target Placement: Flew into well known strip in the morning and got the target set up 647 yards and went back to the firing position.

IMG_2959.jpeg
Shot Conditions: Sunny, 74F, elevation around 200ft MSL. The wind was very light if at all. Heat mirage was at first useful but as the day heated up, it became problematic to clearly see the edges of the target.

The Shot: For the shot, I wanted to shoot a different position than the previous three shots. Due to target position, I had to get up high so elected to use my Aziak Ridgeline tripod for front support and my K4 3600 bag for rear support. I dialed 3.9 and held straight up to seeing a light mirage that would zero out spin drift at that distance, shot and watched impact. Missed about 3" low.

Reflections: Follow the shot process. Glad the CBC is over as I was able to shoot follow up shots on this last target and make repeated hits.

Chose the easy option of 400 yd MER; last season was my first big game hunting and 130 felt like a struggle when pointing at an animal.

6.5 Creed Tikka T3x w/ factory stainless fluted barrel, action, and trigger
Vortex Viper 3-15x scope, Warne Tikka rings
Pure Precision Altitude stock
Airlock Zero Gravity 6.5 can
Triper RP bipod in the front, my DIY bino harness in the back
Factory ELD-X, unknown MV. Before I chopped it ~3" and added a 5" can, I chrono'd 2600 fps on the 24" barrel and I'm sticking with that

Day 1: Hit. 404 yards on a 10" circle painted on a IPSC target. Calculator said 7.87 MOA which I rounded up to 8. Wind was alternation between ~2-10 mph, waited for a lull and with 2 mph in the calculator the wind hold was 0 after accounting for bullet spin drift. Shooting with @Klahklahnee , thanks for the footage brotha!

Video is a little rough and the target isn't obvious, but it is near center frame.

Target after both of us shot, mine is top left, about 3" from center.

Just two good friends shooting their 6.5 Creedmoors in the woods with no one else around, no better way to celebrate Pride Month!
