2025 Bugle Report

In SW Montana, we finished our 2nd day.

Seen plenty of mulies, got into one group of elk but have not heard a single bugle

We were bear hunting in North idaho last weekend and they were screaming their heads off. Glasses up several bulls including 2 6 points. Lots of camps in the area, no one was actually in the woods. Everyone seemed to be calling from the roads.

Central Wyoming from 9-13 to 9-20.

Mornings were quiet all week, pressure was pretty bad, bulls in isolated pockets away from pressure would start popping off around 3/4pm and bugle to and past dark. Bulls closer to pressure might let out one or two bugles, otherwise would stay quiet.

Closed to 60 twice but wind swirled, watched a small 5 wallow for 10 minutes at 50 yards.

We will see what rifle season brings as archery ended with no shots fired

Just got out from a trip in my home area, southwest montana. Elk were absolutely on fire, to the point they were keeping me up most nights...lol Some of the best elk hunting/rutting action I've had in years.

Still eerily quiet in my part of Western CO. Night and day difference vs. same unit last year, and I have no idea why. Muzzleloader season did seem to take out most of the herd bulls, and the few I've come across lately have only been grunting / glunking.

4 days in, SW Montana. Not a bugle to be heard.

Got on a 6x6 today, not a peep.

Creeping through woods and cow calling, group of elk got up and took off. Maybe getting call shy already?

9/13-9/20

In western Wyoming sounds like we were in the small pocket where Elk were actually bugling. We got into them most mornings with a quick location bugle. Also they were sounding off right at sunset and for about an hour afterwards.

I hunted northern New Mexico for 10 days starting the 15th, sporadic bugling first few days, pretty consistent after that, had best luck mid day covering ground and bugling myself, lots of close calls but no elk were harmed by me!
