2025 Bugle Report

I've heard some bugling, but the bulls are all still bunched up where I am in central WY. I've looked over probabaly 200 bulls the last few days and they are all together and nowhere near the cows. They are even play fighting and wallowing. I know I will wake up one morning in the next few days and everything will be different.

Do me a solid and push some of those bulls to the West. Thanks in advance!

The last 2 days of August in Southern Colorado I heard dozens of bugles and saw bulls chasing cows.

Been up since Aug 29.

On morning of sep 1, cows/calves were still in summer groups, very large herds (for this area). Bulls were mixed in with summer herds with lots of cow/calf talk and bulls bugling, raking, grunting, panting, glunking. You'd have thought it was peak rut. Literally hundreds of cows calves spread across about 5 square miles with 7-8 different bulls talking and lots of rags not talking.

Sep 2, summer herds broken into smaller herds (not "rut sized" herds but smaller), some bugling morning and evening but not consistent.

Sep 3, nearly all large herds broken up. Seeing groups of <10 cows/calves and solo bulls. Handful of bugles in the morning

Sep 4, two bugles around 5:30am. Small groups of cows, <6, spotted around. Bulls coming in silently to calls.

TLDR: the "august summer herd breakup" happened late in my area and made some super cool opening day activity. Typical pre-rut now with limited bugling.

Been hearing some bugling in the evenings the this last week while scouting, nothing too crazy yet but season opens tomorrow. Won't be hunting until the 9th.

Heard one bull going off a couple weeks ago in MT. Got a heat wave going now its been quiet. Opener is tomorrow

East Central Idaho. One bugle in the last 2 days. Been very warm, things are slow where we are.

I would have thought there would be a liitle movement towards the rut in central WY by now. Still seeing groups of 10-25 bulls together just out feeding. Cows are grouped up in very large herds with no mature bulls anywhere near. Gotta snap soon.

I have a herd in my neighborhood in the Northern front range Colorado. Saw them off the road last night and the herd bull had his cows with no other bulls in sight. He was bugling and had mud and grass in his antlers. He looked to be feeling rutty.

Northern New Mexico, spent some time scouting some desert elk, well attempting too anyway, very little sign and all was old, some recent heavy rain may have washed out a lot of it. Covered 20ish miles on the boots and heard zero elk!

Trying to avoid the crowds, but you gotta go where the elk are!!!

A bull bugled yesterday morning in MT and I was able to call him in in the evening but botched the shot two minutes from last light.

South Central Wyoming.

Was out looking for bucks yesterday and the only thing I could turn up was elk.

3 different herds all had bulls with them actively chasing cows.(no bugles) I did see 2 bulls together though not interested at all in cows.

Lots of bugling, finally, in Castle Rock CO. Started yesterday. Just a few cow chirps before that.

On the 6th in Central Idaho I was getting responses to every other bugle I threw out. Though they didn’t seem fired up to play the game, just talking.

Hunted S. WY this weekend and had a bull outside camp chuckling while he was covering some ground. Heard another bull bugle twice as he worked his way up a ridge. Not sure if he had cows or not.

Western CO: very quiet so far for me during the first 6 days.

Have come across two bulls that were acting like it was the peak rut, bugling a ton early/late while trying to keep track of their cows as they moved.

Those two aside, heard nothing so far, despite seeing plenty of young-ish bulls (almost all with cows). Looking forward to the moon buzzing off ASAP. Still hunting has been very productive, but I'm really looking forward to not always having to guess whether there are bulls in the herds we chase.

A lot of bugling saturday evening after a heavy rainstorm in SW CO. Silence since then

Headed to Montana tomorrow. Can’t wait to hear that first one rip off. This thread keeps me alive!
