2024/2025 Trapping thread

Getting any of them with the new skunky lure?
The coyote from last night hit a set with the half of a Hispid Cotton Rat down the hole and a stick with a smear of that long calling skunky lure on it stuck in the ground just over the hole.

You got to tan that one, that is awesome!!! Congratulations!!!
Yeah, we are starting from scratch on that department so I put him in the freezer whole to pass the buck until we can research the next steps.

A week or so ago I mentioned to my wife I wanted to drop the foxes and coyotes and that beaver from the 223 thread off at the taxidermist to skin and tan but my 6 year old interrupted and said "daddy...we'll do it ourselves".

Got a marten. A couple beavers crawled out of their dry pond during the warm weather this past weekend. One got eaten and not sure what happened to this one. It was frozen solid about 10 feet from hole where it came out of. Looked like there were a lot of fresh cuttings around.

We’re throwing some Hail Mary’s today trying to get the line active again.

We got iced in on Tuesday night which “never” happens here. In my lifetime this has only happened in 1989, 2010, 2018 and now.

The boy and I excavated a half dozen or so that are easy to find.

We cut some fox tracks and bobcat tracks. The deer are beside themselves.

Trying a new set up too with a staked merganser.

Our line was dead but we used the time to get a few more sets out from under ice.

It’s nice to see the boys realizing on their own that they have to act to achieve.

They’re getting to the point where they are starting to think critically and plan ahead about their own trickery and augmenting sets.

One of the Marten I caught last Friday was running on a stub. Bone was all polished and smoothed out from running in the snow for who knows how long, flesh looked pretty pink compared to the others with dark red flesh.

Night 42.

Soil conditions are fluxating from poor to worse with the weather we have had but all my sets are above snow at this time and I’m popping and rebedding as much as time allows.

If I overhaul the entire line on Saturday if time allows I hope to get a couple more coyotes before our season ends.

Something ate half my merganser but the trap didn’t pop. I think this interference is avian.
