My oldest and I were able to spot this buck bedded in some shade. It took us some work to get positioned for the shot, but with steady rest and calm, composed focus, Huntley put a perfect shot through the lungs of the bedded buck at 225 yards.

This is what it's all about.

Without new young hunters, we have no future.

Congrats

The buck, the pack, or both??? I say both! Great buck!

I was referring to the pack, but yeah both! I was trying to haul ass due to the fresh grizz tracks in the snow, didn’t want to take the time to bone everything out.. when the gut birds started squawking all I could think about was the G bear dinner bell going off!

Literally daily bear traffic on the road to the trailhead and up and down the main trail where I hunt. I hunted 17 days in November and there wasnt a trip on any or the 3 trails that i didn't cut fresh griz tracks. One 4 day span showed 9 different sets of tracks. The main trail runs low along the valley and more than a few whole whiteys were drug out just adding to the lure. I packed my buck out from up above it all in the dark the last 3 years in a row, and that low trail is an eerie sumbich when all you can see is what's in your beam. .....back to the Meat Pole!!!

Got to hunt with my son for the first time in several years and was able to put him on a nice western SD mulie on our first day of hunting. This was his first mule deer buck and it was made even more special in that he got to use my Uncle's favorite rifle on the hunt. My Uncle passed away in January of 2022 and I purchased his favorite rifle from his estate to keep it in the family. It's a custom Argentine Mauser that has been updated with a Timney trigger and Shilen barrel in .25-06. My Uncle would be tickled that it continues to take deer and spend time in the field. I managed to hang my tag on a decent whitetail in the same area a week or so later. Great year and can't wait to do it again soon!

My little otc public land 4x from this year. Glassed him on a cliffy finger at first light, and blew 15 deer out of nowhere on my first attempted approach. Circled the top of the basin and glassed the same finger until 345 pm when he emerged in nearly the same spot. Made a half mile stalk and took him with my 300 wm at 150 yards frontal.

Since this is my first season here, including my 2019 and 2021 otc bucks as well:
