We're back! This is 5th year of our annual Cold Bow Challenge. This challenge is designed to test your realistic Maximum Effective Range (MER). The Challenge will start Saturday, April 17th AT 8:15 MTN TIME on this thread.

You shoot one arrow each day of the challenge with no warm up or follow up shots and no practice between days, hence the name, Cold Bow Challenge.

Below are the entry rules. READ THEM ALL OR DON’T PARTICIPATE.

We delete ineligible posts without notice. If you have questions or comments, post those on the Q&A/Comment thread here, so this thread stays clean.

1) Start a post in this thread (one post per shooter) on your first shooting day (you don't have to start on day one, but you do have to be done within 4 weeks (May 13th) or when the 200th shooter finishes to qualify for prizes). No reserving post slots! Start your post once you start the challenge.

2) Call the range that you think is your REALISTIC maximum effective range (MER). You must shoot your personal MER, so if it’s 60 yards, you can’t shoot 20 because that's all you have in your backyard! Push yourself a bit and make the effort--that's the spirit of the challenge.

3) With no warm up shots, shoot one arrow a day and only one arrow at your MER (you do NOT have to shoot 5 days consecutively, but there is NO PRACTICE between shooting days.)

4) Post a photo of that arrow's placement on a target that represents the kill zone size of your intended species.

5) It's a five-day/five-arrow challenge, so post a photo each day in your original post so all five arrows appear in one post. Just use the "edit" button (bottom of your post on full-site, or if on Tapa Talk, hold your finger on your post for a few seconds to see Edit option)

6) Be sure and mention the conditions, wind direction, and it’s fine to call your shot: “pulled left" for example.

7) Give us a quick summary on your equipment. This is a gear site and we all want to know what our buddies are shooting.

8) To qualify, you must be a member posting on your own account. If you want your kids to shoot, they need to post on their own account. (Sorry, just too messy for the judges to figure out what’s going on.)

Finally, this is not a competition, but because we're generous and we have some great sponsors, I'll be DRAWING for some killer prizes for our members (Rokslide staff, family can shoot but can't win the prizes).

--Every qualified participant shooting field points gets ONE name in the hat
--Every qualified particpant who shoots broadheads (fixed or mechanical) for all five arrows gets TWO names in the hat *note that practice heads for mechanicals are counted as field points. Shoot your mechanical if you want to qualify for broadhead category
--For every member that has at least 250 posts (on the day we qualify you), we'll give you THREE names in the hat for field points, or FOUR for Broadheads (fixed or mechanical, must shoot broadheads all five days)--it pays to be an active member!

All Traditional and Compound shooters are welcome (but there will not be separate divisions). You can shoot both Traditional for five arrows and Compound for five arrows to double your odds, (put all 10 arrows in one post and it's OK to shoot both bows on the same day)

@Travis Bertrand and I will draw from those who complete the challenge according to these rules

(and if you're wondering, @randyulmer is coming out again for this year's challenge!)

5/19/21 update:
You all ready for this? This is the fun part for me and the staff. We love to give away great gear from Rokslide's very generous sponsors. Even if you don't win, support these sponsors as they stepped up with $thousands in gear to support the cause of making better bowhunters!

@Travis Bertrand drew for the winners.

The way I'm going to do it, is post the prizes valued under about $350 today and get that slew of emails out of the way, then post the bigger prizes between tomorrow and Monday.

First, if you don't want your prize, you can either...

1) Give it to a friend
2) Let the alternate shown next to your name take it.

I can't be the go-between on trading prizes! I just need to know who we're shipping to, so just send me the email when you have a final decision.

You can PM your alternate by using the search in upper right corner, 2nd text box in the drop-down (in full-site) then typing the screenname. I won't contact the alternate unless you don't claim your prize.

To claim your prize, email me at [email protected] by May 26th or prize goes to your alternate.

Hi guys! Here is my first shot for the 2021 CBC.
CBC 2021 first arrow @ 85 yards

On a side note, you could play a drinking game watching my video, drink every time I say "ah" in the video.
Shooting a Hoyt Ventum 33 with a Iron Will S125

Weather is mild, no wind and 35 degrees.

Day two
33 degrees, clear sky, no wind.

Day three, 38 degrees with a 15 wind at my back.

Day 4
33 degrees 5-10mph wind from behind me

Final day

Cold and windy. 28 degrees maybe 15mph.
Almost out of the center hex but it’s in there.

I’m calling 2021 “The Year of the Sheep” and in its honor I broke out old mossback and chose its 10-ring in the vitals for a target size (about a 5” circle) and am setting my Maximum Effective Range at 60 yards through a narrow gap in the timber. I’ve been pounding my bag target this spring for the upcoming review of the Hoyt Ventum 33 and it has helped whip me into shooting shape. Hopefully a little luck comes my way in the sheep draw….

Day one: Conditions were calm and warm. I stepped off the road bike after a 1.5-hour ride and grabbed the bow to simulate shooting in a fatigued state. This one was in the 12 which is a great way to start the challenge!

P1000508.JPG

Day two: 30 degrees and calm. solid 10 ring.
P1000513.JPG

This is lane to the target.
P1000511.JPG

Day Three: Calm and 48 degrees. I am feeling really good with this Ventum 33.... time to take it bear hunting!
P1000518.JPG

Day four: 50 degrees and a slight 2 mph breeze from my left.
P1000520.JPG

Day Five: The final shot was taken immediately following a long road bike ride. 65 degrees with a 2-3 mph breeze from the left. Again, this was barely out of the 12 ring but I'll take it.

Bow: Mathews Traverse at about 63lbs, 29". MBG Mountain Lite 3 pin sight, 8" front, 6" rear stabilizers, Mathews Arrow Web quiver, Integrate Rest. New this year, the bow has custom strings (made by a local string maker) that have been phenomenal, Mathews Engage Limb Legs (extraordinarily handy with the added benefit of some stabilization), and a BeeReal Grip that has helped immensely in fixing hand torque (thus a longer MER this year). Spot-Hogg Whipper Snapper Release.

Arrows: Beeman ICS 300 at 510gr. 100 grain VPA 3 blade broadhead.
20210416_112009.jpg
20210417_094524.jpg

Target species: Whitetail deer. Target has an 8" dot ring that I'll call a hit.

MER: 50yds. This is 5yds more than last year as my consistency has increased over the past year.
20210416_111358.jpg

Day 1: Light wind off my left shoulder. 35Deg. Out and overcast. Solid hit. Short recovery work.
20210417_094712.jpg

Day 2: Beautiful 50° sunshine with no wind. Not great but not too bad either considering my 4 y/o was dancing around next to me.
20210419_094820.jpg

Day 3: Overcast, light winds, 50deg. 2y/o banging on the storm door. I knew I held left when I released but just squeezed it in there. Should be a dead deer after not too long of a walk.
20210420_105520_001.jpg

Day 4: Fresh snow, calm & 35° out. Shot felt really good. Pin must have been floating slightly off center. Would've done the job though.
20210421_091954.jpg

Day 5: Felt like a great late-season deer tracking day out there; not conditions for an easy shot but excellent for sneaking up on a bedded deer. 30deg out with blustery winds and some glare from the sun. Should have made for a relatively short tracking job.
20210422_101839.jpg

Afterthoughts: It was great doing this challenge for the third time. After two full years with the new bow I'm settling in and the random flyers are getting to be much less. I think the 50 yard MER was the right choice as all shots were within the 8" circle...but just barely on a few.

Looking forward to next year. Thank you Rokslide staff for all your work that goes in to this challenge and this community!

Well- another year! I am shooting an old Hoyt Carbon Element 63#, Black Gold 3 pin S&S special, Limbdriver ProV rest, with a 300 spine Black Eagle Spartan and a Magnus stinger 125 (I chickened out with the fog, I didnt want to lose my IW125 $$$)-
Day1: This morning was freezing fog and no wind- very challenging to see the deer target with the sun and fog- My arrow landed in the vitals but a little forward- My MER is 60 yards
tempImagerAhjgd.jpgtempImageo0WZww.jpgtempImageGZknjo.jpg
Day 2 - 25mph wind from the south blowing from the rear of the deer forward. I tried to compensate for the wind and wouldnt you know it, at 60 yards it hit right where I was aiming- so this one is rear of the vitals but still in the lungs I guess.
tempImageZjhN8t.jpg
Day 3 - No wind, 23 degrees and a fresh snow, freezing fingers from clearing snow bare handed from the barn door made for a real feel!
tempImage9MTwJn.jpg
Day 4 - well there it is- out of the vitals- gusty winds from the south. I should have let down.
tempImagePKvpTD.jpg
Day 5 - I thought Id spice it up for the last shot, go for a jog then shoot unknown past my MER- turned out to be 67 yards- shot for 64. Calm winds

Take that one CBC!

With the day off yesterday due to High winds, I felt extra rusty this morning. I made the vitals, but my confidence was pretty low when the bow went off. 30 degress, 3-5 mph in my face. Standing
Day 3:

Light winds, I held my first shot too long so I let down. Second shot wasn’t any better. Kneeling. Day 4:

Light winds, standing. I knew I had vitals before arrow even hit because I remembered my follow-through

So, in true "COLD" fashion I hadn't pulled my bow back since I shot my buck on New Years Eve at 42 yds. Last year my MER for this was 50, this year I decided to bump it back to 60 yds. Bow is Hoyt CD 34, shooting Axis arrows with all IW components, s100 head.

First shot of 2021 for me. I even used the same bloody arrow from New Years Eve. (Shame on me for at least not oiling the IW). Sun was a bitch shooting East this morning.

I am shooting the cold bow challenge this year for the first time! My MER is going to be 65yds.I am shooting a Prime black 5 at #74, 29" 490gr gold tip 300, black gold 5 pin slider, hamskea rest, and a 100gr vented iron will for a broadhead.
Day 1. No wind, 30°, overcast, shot felt good but was high a few inches
Day 2. 10mph wind, 42°, sunny, shot felt good but was the same 3in high and 1.5in right.
Day 3. 5mph crosswind, 36°, overcast, shot broke a little early and I was getting a little inside my head with the first 2 shots high. Need to not overthink things.
Day 4. 0 wind, 11° bright as it could be with no clouds and fresh snow. Took a few minutes to relax and focus on my shot. Shot broke like it should with pin floating perfectly. Bullseye. Couldn't ask for more! Cut part of the earplug used as a center dot off.
Day 5. Slight breeze, 23°, light snow flurries. I was running a little late for work and I rushed the shot. Punched the trigger and jerked it to the high left. Knew it the second the shot broke, disappointed I didn't take the extra 5 seconds to focus.

Super excited to do this every year thanks Rokslide and prize sponsors for the fun challenge!

This year I’m moving my MER to 50 yards. I’ve been trying to get more comfortable at this distance as I’ve been hunting the ND badlands a lot the last few years. My kill zone is 10" circle on my target.

My equipment is:

Hoyt Nitrum 30
Easton Axis 340s
Brass 25gr inserts
Slick Trick Broadheads
Black Gold Ascent Verdict 5 Pin

*Update I love this challenge because it humbles you a bit and for me reiterates focusing on the fundamentals and make my shot consistent. When it was windy, I let it affect my shot. I need to practice more when conditions aren't ideal if I want to take this shot on an animal. 3/5 wasn't great so I want to keep improving!

Here’s my target view:

2f948c651397c86908c696d2807111af.jpg

Day 1: 4/17 pretty pleased! Cool and sunny no wind this AM.

Day 2: Sunday 4/18 was nice in the AM, windy. Shot high
c33f606f9d6fc6c74d728d11dec8d6b8.jpg

Day 3: Monday 4/19 was extremely windy and cold. I dropped my arm when I shot and went low and left.

Day 4: Cold, cloudy and windy. Typical North Dakota.

Think I pulled a bit again or the wind had me off base. Coulda been worse.

Day 5: Sunny light wind shot felt great right in the boiler room.

Mer of 65 yards this year. Roughly 8" kill zone, using a 50 cm outdoor target so the mid line of the 4 ring. Shooting approximately 20 feet up a tree.

Shooting a 31.5 VXR @ 65# and 28.5" with 80% letoff. Tommy hogg sight with 5 pin housing. 65 is my bottom pin right off the level, so max without adjusting. 10/8 beestinger with 6 F/8R. Hamskea Trinity Pro with the .012 blade. Arrows are GT pro hunters with standard inserts and 125 IW solid on the front with flex fletch FFP 360 vanes, they glow in the dark. Using my old standby spot hogg whipper snapper release.

IMG_20210417_092747711.jpgIMG_20210417_093216946.jpg

Day 1:

Perfect weather, no wind 50 degrees. Today I'm facing the tree for my shot.
Shooting straight into the sun. Blinded me. I can still see spots from the sun coming off my level. Couldn't begin to see the bubble in the level, terrible shot.

IMG_20210417_093506224_HDR.jpg

You can see how the sun was glaring. I don't think it's a shot I would have taken, would have waited on a better one.

Day 2:

56 degrees, 1:45 pm local time. Overcast, supposed to have a wind from the north (behind me) but not noticing anything. Today I shot seated in my stand shooting 45 degrees off to my left side (the shooter). So not perpendicular to my stance like a normal shot but between that and straight ahead. Wasn't as stable as I'd like but it's a little bit of an awkward angle.

IMG_20210418_135032409_HDR.jpg

I'll take it. Suitable for the conditions. Slightly made up for yesterday. Dog didn't like it, he promptly pissed on it when we walked up there....

Day 3:
5:15 pm local time. 63 degrees, overcast and no wind. Shot with the tree behind me today, tree stand facing the target. It out my release elbow up close to the tree. Shot felt good.

IMG_20210419_170055370_HDR.jpg

Kinda surprised with the impact. Like I said shot felt good, then again it's only 3" high at 65 yards, so all in all it's not a bad shot.

Day 4:

Shot was 8:20 pm local time. Sunset was 7:58, so a last legal light shot. 10mph winds, from right to left. My arms are complete jelly from stuff this evening, blah blah blah. Rushed to try to get the shot in. Had the tree to my back, tree stand running to the right side of the tree from the target. Shot felt good but I could hardly tell if I was looking thru my peep or not. I never have trouble centering high/low, but left/right I need to keep a check on. It was kinda impossible to tell what was going on. Shot felt good tho, but then not the solid impact I expected.

IMG_20210420_202546963.jpg

So impact was left of target. That smaller tree on the near upper right corner of the target is the tree I'm shooting from. Arrow skipped and is likely gone. That road bed has just been used as a skidder road so it's pretty hard. My bow was inside so the flow in the dark vanes hadn't accumulated any light. I'll look for it a little tomorrow but I suspect it's gone. Sucks, but I know I shouldn't be shooting that far with that little light, I mean I kinda knew that, but I need to start shooting again. Got a 3d starting on Friday.

Day 5:

Sure happy it's over. 7:45 am local time. 55 degrees 10 mph wind, going right to left. Sun was in front of me but off to the side a little, nothing like day one. Recreated the shot from last night for some redemption. Shot felt good. Still sour about loosing the arrow.

IMG_20210421_080241503.jpg

Made a good hit.

Conclusion, maybe I'm not a treestand hunter. Not that I didn't have plenty of obstacles. Guess when I can see I can hit. When you are blinded by the sun, or don't have enough of it maybe you shouldn't shoot.

Picture of everything:
IMG_20210421_080146082_HDR.jpg

Thanks again to Robby, Sam, and everyone else at RS for putting this on. It's fun, something different. Nice to have the sponsors step up with all the donated prizes as well.

Good luck to everyone this year.

Like last year off to a Shaky start.

Yesterday I sent my release into my rest and had to remount it (shoutout to Hamskea for surviving a direct hit). By the end of the day my broadheads and field points were on top of each other at 50

This year I chose 51 as the MER (sight is set at 50 because certainly the animal isn't at the exact distance as whatever landmark I'd used to determine that range). My next hunt is a turkey hunt so I don't plan on any long bombs. I picked the red rings as the target size.

Bow is a PSE NTN Evo 33
Hamskea Hybrid Hunter Pro Rest
Nock 2 It Release
300 Spine Easton Axis w/ 50 gr HIT, 10 gr IW collar, and 100gr points, wrap and 4 fletch AAE Max Stealth w/ a nockturnal on the back.
Total arrow weight is around 510 if I remember right, maybe a bit over
Bow is currently set just over 60lbs. I'll shoot 70 after turkey season but usually shoot 60 through the winter and turkeys. 30.5" DL
Spott Hogg Double Pin Fast Eddie XL Sight
Quivalizer
Iron Will Solid 100 Broadhead

Day 1 - ~40 degrees. Light breeze from 2 o'clock. Sun at my 4 o'clock.
As soon as I hit the trigger I knew I screwed up. I've been really focusing on the angle of my hand/release, and also the direction I pull my back elbow. When I'm shooting well I get stuff like the first picture. When I don't... well see below for day 1 results. Hopefully a little better tomorrow!

Day 2 - I didn't think it'd get any worse than day 1. Steady wind left to right. I actually drew back, then let down and almost came back later. Decided that defeated the purpose and I'd still be fine. Probably would've been if I'd executed a good shot but I didn't... Maybe I'll go 0/5 this year :ROFLMAO:

Day 3 - ~40 degrees with a light breeze Left to right. Executed a better shot but doesn't help when my sight is set at 48. I wouldn't think 3 yards would put me quite that low but either way I'm going to go hang my head in shame.

Day 4 - On the board and guaranteed to finish at least 1/5! Upper 30 temps, much lighter breeze today from R-L and a solid shot from 51 yards.

Day 5 - The only thing worse than my NM draw results was my shot this morning. I went into this pretty confident after stacking arrows at 50 the night before. Low-mid 30s this morning with a pretty light breeze. I went out earlier than normal as turkey season opens today. I'll definitely need to get within 50 yards though!

Yay! My first year!

I bought a bow last year, then promptly got deployed. Frankly, this CBC was what prompted me to buy one.

I’ve cobbled together this used setup:

Mathews Vertix, 63#, 28.5” draw
QAD drop away rest
The stabilizer that came on it
G5 quiver
Spott Hogg Tough Guy release
MBG Revenge(?) sight (got it used, too)
Easton FMJ 5mm with Slick Trick magnum broadheads (courtesy of a gift card to BLackOvis)

Took my first shot this morning. My MER is likely 20 yards. I’ve shot a total of like 40 arrows lifetime.

Species of interest: primarily whitetail. I live in Michigan, so the chance of a shot further than my MER is slim. And this small circle is even smaller than the heart/lung zone on a whitetail.

But it’s a challenge, so I challenged myself. This is at 34 yards, 19* down angle...

Day 1:

Day 2:
Slight R—>L breeze at about 3-5 mph. Shifted dot of choice. They’re each ~3”, so plenty of margin for error on the boiler room of a deer. The break was a little hasty but the follow-through wasn’t bad.

Day 3:
I’m learning things with every single shot.

Today was clear and brisk. Almost no wind (I’m in a bit of a valley with thick woods behind the house). Had to delay my shot by nearly an hour as three deer browsed (no so intelligently, as my wife pointed out) right in front of my target. Two does and a button yearling. As you can see, a lot of glare as the sun is low and off my 1:30 o’clock. Where I think I’ll set up this fall: the wind will be slight but in my face, and the sun to my back, about a mile south of here.

I used the wrong pin here. Yep, that smart. Went down to the third pin because of my own error. Laterally, I was at the left edge of the center dot, and I’d still have high-lung-shot it. So it’s probably still a dead deer; I’ll bet I’d have tracked this one a ways. But an embarrassing rookie mistake.

Full disclosure, I’ve been shooting Gold Tip Hunters (?) at 8.9 gpi vs these FMJs at about 11.3 gpi. And field point vs these broadheads. I questioned if I ought not to have stuck with what I knew, but I wanted a challenge and this is meant to replicate hunting. This fall, I’d like to try bow hunting for the first time. So this is closer to my hunting rig. So I am re-doping my whole rig on the fly, and I’m now three shots into that process. Don’t know why I thought that was smart; I’d never re-dope a rifle before a hunt or an op? But it’s a challenge for a reason!

These Slick Trick Magnums have an impressive trocar:

What’s impressive is the amount of rotation those helical fletchings put on the arrow. It’s untwisting through the “wound channel” as I pulled it from the target.

Maybe someday I’ll be cool enough to get a set of IWs like my buddy. Those are some impressive broadheads.

Day 4:
Cold today. Here’s the view downrange to the target

I worked last night. So I’m a triple espresso and a drive and ton of fatigue in the hole. Crappy conditions for a shot, but pretty representative of what a hunt might be like.

The pin was bouncing all around, and I felt the shot break left. Was aiming for the center dot. Had had to stop and re-breathe twice at full draw and am not 100% certain my nose button was in the perfect place (in retrospect).

d46d46c0db3dfa5859789064b44b6aa9.jpg

So I’m happy that I called it. Less pleased with where the arrow is. About 4.5” left and 1” high of bullseye. Bow shooting is a much more dynamic process than rifle or pistol shooting!

Day 5:
We got snow overnight. There’s probably a half inch in places, but it’s going to melt soon, I’d imagine. Clear and a cold 28*. Very little wind on my right cheek.

I aimed center-mass (for the center dot) because it’s the last day. And overall, despite also having worked last night, had two coffees and three espressos, I was more patient and this one broke much cleaner. And it shows.

I’m about 1/2” left of the 8:30 position. Now that’s a dead deer!

So what did I learn? Practice. I need a lot more practice. And practice with my ultimate hunting setup. There are so many variables between arrow weight and construction, broadhead design and vanes...

I’ve never had much confidence in my ability with a bow. I was largely of the opinion that I could hit something with an arrow with more effective range than shooting. I was wrong. Frankly, these things are awesome and automatic, and just fun. And I’m better than I thought. But at the end of the day, I need more practice and have the confidence that I can get there. I can see why bow hunting is so addictive.

I think for this year my MER for real-life won’t be further than 30 yards (if I hunted tomorrow). Thankfully I can practice in my backyard and have all summer. And this is somewhat therapeutic given that I have a major professional milestone exam this fall.

Thanks again for putting this on. This was a blast and I’ll be eagerly looking forward to next year.

This year I'm shooting a 2021 Hoyt Ventum 33. Right now it's at 72lbs 29" and I'm waiting for 80# limbs to be delivered. My MER will be 65 yards using the center hexagon of the Matrix target as my vitals area.

I'm shooting Alien Archery Replicant 100 grain for this challenge.

First shot went well, almost no wind.

Second shot. Rainy, cold, and windy. Went as well as I would suspect.

Third shot, gusty left to right wind, tried to compensate but overcorrected, still in the kill zone but the hold felt good.

Fourth shot, hold felt steady, release was crisp. Slight left to right wind.

Shot 5 felt good, pin float was a little more than I like and I had to pull hard on the back wall to steady.

I have done this challenge every year since it started. Either on my own or posting the shots. I always learn something and I have decreased my MER every year, probably just being more honest with myself and knowing that small form errors are magnified with broadheads.

Thanks to Robby and all the Rokslide staff who work on sifting through the posts and getting sponsors lined up.

And thanks to everyone pulling their bows back and letting some carbon fly, helping each other to increase our self confidence with our equipment.

Hey guys! Practice has been slack but really pushing myself with 60yds MER. Shooting a Mathews Traverse 70# 30.5”dl. Rampage 250s with ethics outserts and field points, 220 point weight, 575 total. Here’s shot one this morning. Calling the white circle the kill zone but probably a little small for an elk to make myself feel a tad better. Have never been in the woods with 60 being a possibility so we will see.

Day 2, shot felt a lot better and the result shows it! 75, sunny, and a light breeze at my back. 4D78B774-CA07-4E41-BDB9-1735D5C84F69.jpeg

Tough day on the outcome today. Ran up and down a little hill a few times to get the heart rate up. Really thought the shot was better. Wind could have been a little more right to left than I thought, but still not a good result. 65 sunny and a little breeze.

Day 4. 75 and sunny with a 5-10ish breeze from about 2:00. Pin settled quick and shot felt great. Fairly happy with the result, but still room to improve.

Day 5. Breezy from the 7:00 direction. Shot felt pretty good but think I over estimated a little wind drift. Glad to be able to get back to practicing!
