Congrat's to all you guys and gals who took a nice buck this year! After four days hunting as hard as I know how, this little guy walked right into my lap and I couldn't pass up the opportunity for a couple reasons - First, I tweaked my back on day two and although I was 1.5 mi. from the truck at 9400 feet, it was by far the easiest 1.5 miles I'd hiked all week so I knew the pack out would be very do-able. Second, the forecast was for a low of 8 degrees the next evening and I had enough of that nonsense last year! Finally, I had seen 32 deer in 4 days and this was just the 2nd buck! :D

So I took it as a sign when he offered me a 45 yard chip shot an hour before sunset.

I will say I've never, ever seen so many hunters as I saw this past weekend! They were literally everywhere. Road hunters, private land hunters, backpack hunters, ATV hunters, etc. There was orange all over the hills down low so I bailed on that and went up high where I had a little more room to myself.

A fun hunt with my good buddy @colby12

We still had camp on our backs when we turned this buck up opening morning. After bedding him down we dropped off to the bottom to set up camp. We turned him up in the afternoon but fog, rain and snow saved his life that day. The next morning he was about a half mile from where we left him the night before, all the way to the top of a big steep ridge. He fed into a clearing and Colby took a shot across the canyon and missed. The deer only moved about 150 yards and started feeding. We couldn't see exactly where he had bedded or the other 3 bucks he was with were bedded, but knew they were somewhere in the head of a little draw on that ridge. We decided to make a move on them and get into the saddle at the head of that little draw. After a 1600' elevation gain from the bottom we were on top and trying to find landmarks from where we last seen them. As we dropped lower I heard the deer running on the shale rock. We had bumped them and all 4 bucks were running through the burn. Colby got a rest on a burnt stump and made a couple good shots on his running buck. It was a damn good time.

Wow! 1600' vertical is no cakewalk. What a memorable hunt.

It was a short distance to get there. Just up a lot. I think we hiked 2.5 hrs to get above him before he killed him. It was a lot of fun though.

I had a spot earlier this week that as 600' above the road in about 1/4 mile. I was gassed. I can't imagine 1600. It would take me half the day. LOL You guys are amazing really and my fatass flatland friends think I'M a mountain goat. LOL They have no idea.

Lol not to derail but my packout was less than 4 miles and i had to gain over 3500' elevation. Im sure its much worse in other areas with bigger mountains tho. I had goats/sheep below my camp, it was a brutal hunt but i had the whole area to myself so it was well worth it to me and i will do it again as often as i can draw the tag!

My son's buck. I spotted the buck bedded and Dylan made a great shot as usual at 217 yards. The buck never got out of his bed. I didn't know it at the time was I was sick with Covid and that day was rough.

My buck. My brother and I glassed this buck from a couple of miles away two days before I killed him and figured he was worth a closer look. We saw him again with a bunch of does the next night but there was only one minute of legal shooting time left so I decided to wait. The next morning we spotted the buck and I was able to make one good shot and watch him fall 10 yards away.

11-12-21 - SE Montana, HD 701. 2 days of hunting in 25-35 mph winds with gusts to 40+ in open country was no fun. Day 3 was 16 degrees, breezy and dense fog, everything coated in icy rime with visibility around 150 yards. Parked on the ranch two-track an hour before sunrise but didn't leave the truck for 2 hours when it was still 150 and little chance the sun was going to help. Caught this old boy at the edge of visibility with a doe at 200 yards as they gently grazed. One 150 gr. Barnes TTSX from my 30-06 anchored him. The doe, not 15 feet away, had no reaction, looked around for a while, noticed the buck was down and walked over to sniff him then walked peacefully away. With the hunt over the sun came out and the fog lifted before we even returned with the truck to pick him up.

Look at his right hind quarter and you'll see the hair messed up. If felt almost like it had a burdock really tangled in it. The taxidermist said it is a cow lick and is common, caused by the deer laying on that particular area repeatedly until the hair begins growing in an other than normal direction.

Holy crap I'm so glad I finally get to participate in the 2021 meat pole. I truly thought I might end up eating my tags this year. I out a good shot on her and she gave me one of the top 3 blood trails I've ever had. Not that I needed it, but it gives a guy a good feeling.

Dragged this beauty out whole a lonnng way so I can get every ounce of meat off her. IMG_20211121_152004206.jpgIMG_20211121_151950755.jpgIMG_20211121_152246089.jpgIMG_20211121_152334998.jpgIMG_20211121_152347489.jpg
