2019 Cold Bow Challenge

The 2019 Cold Bow Challenge will start Saturday, May 11th and run through Sunday, June 9th. Thread will be unlocked early on the 11th.

We kicked this off in 2017. This really wasn't my idea as I've heard many pro-shooters (who hunt) endorse this method in various media over the years.

This challenge is designed to test your realistic Maximum Effective Range (MER). You shoot one arrow each day of the challenge with no warm up or follow up shots and no practice between days, hence the name, Cold Bow Challenge.

With this in mind, we're kicking off the 2019 Cold Bow Challenge with a few modifications from last year.

Here are the rules:

1) Start a post in this thread (one post per shooter) on your first shooting day (you don't have to start on day one, but you do have to be done within 30 days to qualify for prizes).

2) Call the range that you think is your maximum effective range (MER).

3) With no warm up shots, shoot one arrow a day and only one arrow at your called range (you do NOT have to shoot 5 days consecutively, but there is NO PRACTICE between shooting days.)

4) Post a photo of that arrow's placement on a target that represents the kill zone size of your intended species.

5) It's a five-day/five-arrow challenge, so post a photo each day in your original post. Just use the "edit" button (bottom of your post) so all five arrows appear in one post. Do not start your post to reserve your slot, start your post on the first day that you shoot.

6) Be sure and mention the conditions, wind direction, and it’s fine to call your shot: “pulled left" for example.

7) Give us a quick summary on your equipment. This is a gear site and we all want to know what our buddies are shooting.

8) If multiple posters are on one post, only the member's entry will be counted. To qualify, you must be a member posting on your own account.

Finally, this is not a competition, but because we're generous and we have some great sponsors, I'll be DRAWING for some killer prizes for our members (Rokslide staff will shoot, but can't win the prizes).

--Every qualified participant shooting field points gets ONE name in the hat
--Every qualified particpant who shoots broadheads (fixed or mechanical) for all five arrows gets TWO names in the hat
--For every member that has at least 250 posts (on the day we qualify you), we'll give you THREE names in the hat for field points, or FOUR for Broadheads (fixed or mechanical, must shoot broadheads all five days)--it pays to be an active member!

All Traditional and Compound shooters are welcome (but there will not be separate divisions for this year). You can shoot both Traditional for five arrows and Compound for five arrows to double your odds, (put all 10 arrows in one post and it's OK to shoot both bows on the same day)

I plan on shooting the CBC twice, once with the Hoyt Helix Ultra and again with the Hoyt RX-3 Turbo.

Hoyt Helix is set at 29", 71.6# shooting a Gold Tip Platinum Pierce 300 with a 4 fletch AAE Pro Max and an Ironwill V100 that weighs 449gr @ 279 fps. FOC is just over 17%.

The RX-3 Turbo is set at 29", 71.8# shooting a Easton Injexion 280 with a 3 fletch AAE Pro Max and an Ironwill S125
that weighs 527gr @ 282 fps. FOC is 17.90%

Great start Tony!
I’m shooting Athen’s Convixtion, 65lbs, Gold Tip Kinetic Pierce Platinum topped with Iron Will 100 gr. vented Broadhead.

I’m calling 60 yards as my Maximum Effective Range

Day 1 vid and pic (standing):

Day #2. Took the Matrix to the hills east of town and found a bluff that looked a lot like places I’ve seen muley bucks bed. Set it up at 60 yards and, kneeling) fired my one arrow at a 20-degree angle in a light thermal moving left to right: Money!

Day #3. Standing. Perfect conditions but I can feel the rust settling in from not practicing. And sure enough, just as I was letting the pin settle in, I pulled right. 3” out of my vital.

This is why I believe in this challenge. If you’re honest and you push yourself to what you think is your true maximum effective yardage, the challenge will reveal what you’re truly capable of under pressure & conditions close to hunting (1 shot that you can’t take back). See you tomorrow!

Day #4. Perfect conditions. Standing. Back in the game

Day #5 light wind from left. Kneeling.
Like day 3, just settling pin and bow fired. 1” out of kill zone

So in 3 years of CBC, I’ve missed 17% of my shots.

In that time I’ve gone from 70 yards and field points and a 9 inch vital, to 60 yards, broadheads and an 8 inch vital (using Mendoza’s system for vital size).

It shows me personally that I’m still trying to shoot too far. Even though I’ve killed deer at these distances, my true maximum range is closer to 55.

It’s hard to admit when you’re not as good as you think you are, but is why I host this challenge.

Also leading up to this challenge, I had one string of 6 days in a row hitting vital at 60 yards on my first arrow BUT I was practicing between days. That’s why it’s so important that we do all we can to shoot in camp if possible on the hunt. Chuck Adams was preaching it 30 years ago that you can’t take days off on the hunt if you expect to maintain your preseason shooting accuracy.

Day 2 again no wind, mountain thermals were swirling and deer was on alert, I waited till a plane flew over head, then sneaked to with in 70 and let one fly.
Pretty sure I hit vitals
Went and found arrow, lots of blood
Probably didn't go far, gonna give him a half hour.

Day 3
Got up early, found this buck looking for other bucks.
I let him pass, but then he came back and I got a closer look. Glad he did, he was a shooter for sure.

Kind of windy with 5-0 mph early morning winds.
He heard the shot and ducked a bit and spun
Caught him a tad high and forward but still think it was money

Eating a snack now giving him a little bit of time

Next to last day of the season
Haven't seen my #1 buck I called "dark timber" so I'm sitting on my #37 buck called "freezer filler"

It was a 70 yard bedded shot, looked good. When he stood up I could see my arrow in the vitals

Calm day little wind. I'm looking forward to an easy pack out and getting back home. Been hunting since 1979.

No other bucks, he fed right towards me at 70 yards, then turned broad side so I shot
It was cold, and I was a little shakey, but it worked out
Shot and saw him run and fall over
Glad it ended this way
Now onto Idaho for my elk hunt

I’m shooting my 2014 Carbon Spyder Turbo at 77lbs and 27.5” draw, sight is a CBE Tek Hybrid 5 pin slider, QAD HDX rest, Strings are from Park-n-Sons, fuse carbon blade 9.5” stabilizer and tight spot quiver. Arrows are RIP TKO 250’s with 75gr HIT inserts, Iron Will Impact collars, 6 fletched with AAE PM2.0 vanes and shooting IW S100 heads. The arrow weigh 490gr and should be in the ballpark of 285fps.

I’m also shooting a Carter Simple 1 release.

Shooting a deer target at 40 yards which is the furthest I can shoot in town. The target has about a 6” tall vital zone.


Day 1 compound hit was low, no wind and sunny, shot at 6:30 am while having my A.M. Coffee.



Day 2 Compound hit low again almost in the exact hole. no wind and sunny shot at 9:30 am


Day 3 shot didn’t feel as good, shot after a long days work instead of first thing in the AM. Steady wind blowing from right to left maybe 15mph? Still would equal a dead deer but most likely would have hit some bone.


Day 4, I added a dot to the target which seems to have pulled me into the center. Windy and overcast 10mph right to left.


Day 5 - totally blew the shot, 25mph wind and raining, i could feel the bow blowing around and forced the shot big time. Missed about 6” right.


Second bow is a Black Hawk Scorpion made back in 1961, I bought it for $10 at a yard sale 20 years ago when I was in high school. It 39lbs at 28” draw. The arrow is a cheap mossy oak carbon and it’s tipped with a Magnus Buzzcut.

I have never took the time to get arrow built for it since it, some day I would like to start shooting enough to be able to deer hunt with it. My first shot today was with this bow and I smacked my forearm bad right behind my arm guard The shot was at 15yards into a Rienhart 18:1 and flat to flat is 8”.



Day 1 shot was 2” right of the square which I’m actually OK with since I don’t shoot this bow much at all. no wind and sunny.


Day 2 missed the target, guess that’s why they call them a struggle stick. no wind and sunny.


Day 3 similar to day one, on target but slightly outside the 8” square, 15mph wind from right to left, probably not much effect from that at 15 yards


Day 4 finally in the zone



Day 5- Rushed the shot with the trad bow too. Super wind and raining so defiantly wasn’t focused. Arrow deflected off of the top of the target into the dirt behind it.



After 5 days I can tell I defiantly need to keep shooting throughout the summer. I feel ok considering I switched to totally different arrows and went up 90gr a few weeks ago and just tuned for Broadheads last week. I feel like right now my MER is around 40 yards. We have several 3D shoots to go to this summer and I really haven’t started shooting or fine tuned my bow yet, I’m confident I will be able to extend my range before fall even though my last several elk have been well under 30 yards.

Defiantly won’t be hunting with the trad bow anytime soon. At least not for big game.

Started out this bow challenge right. Shooting a bowtech assassin (simple and affective bow) for hunting. 65 lbs, and 29" draw length. Shooting gold tip 400 xt hunters with trophy taker 100 gr ulmer mechanical broadhead. The nice part about these are that you can put in a screw and the blades will not deploy. This makes it perfect for practice in real life situations.

I have plenty of targets to pick from so i chose a black buck for this years challenge, the triceratops was tempting. a bit smaller than a whitetail and figured i could routinely hit a kill zone at 50 yards.

First shot of the competition was calm, 65 deg day, smooth release, 11 ring kill. Hopefully the weather stays this way for the next 4 days


Day 2: not quite as impressive as day one. Had a slight breeze right to left, wanted to rain and I just didn't feel as solid as day 1.



It probably would've killed the buck but it would've been a rough tracking job until his chest cavity filled up. May have gotten an unlucky but lethal spine hit.
Day 3 already feels better than today

Day 3: With the weather being so so as far as a little mist and a steady but minor wind from the back, I went out early before work since i won't be home till after dark.



Dead buck in my mind but the left hit two days in a row has me wondering what is slipping in my form.

Day 4: time to tighten this up. Calm, cool 43 degrees this morning. Settled the pin in knowing i didn't want to have a left hit again:

brought the shot back into the 10 ring, slightly left, which I now am thinking i was not as sighted in as i thought i was. Some more shooting to follow after tomorrow's day 5.

Day 5: after seeing 3 solid days of left hits and fighting the itch, i did the unthinkable. I moved my sights without confirming zero post move. Weather was a slight breeze in my face, crisp 50 deg and a good representation of a real life shot.

It worked out as you can see, a solid low 10 heart shot. I will say that 50 yards is definitely a solid yardage for me but the height of awareness by the animal will still limit my shots. I killed a whitetail last year at 35 yards and even though that's a chip shot, the doe turned and i hit the back thigh and had a full pass all the way up through the neck, lethal but not the idea.

Shooting a 2010 Hoyt alpha max 32 with 28.5” draw at 70lbs, have a tight spot and a Montana black verdict 5 pin sight. I’ll be using the 340 gold tip kinetic kaos with 75 grain brass inserts and 100 grain vented iron will Broadheads.

I’ll be shooting at 45 yards since that’s as far as I can get in my yard. Don’t mind the mess in the back yard, we just finished this house and had a baby at the same time and still have the landscaping to take care of.

First day of the challenge no wind, 83 degrees 4:30ish Pm

Day 2- snuck out before the wife and baby woke up, 7am no wind 50 degrees but I pulled my shot right

Day 3- shot low and a bit forward, shot a different arrow and it sounded weird and seems the broad head wasn’t threaded in all the way.

Day 4- shot felt good no wind and just a slight drizzle

Day 5- it was pouring rain when I went out to shoot my final shot, shot low and back.

Overall it shows that I haven’t picked up or shot my bow since September, now that life has slowed down a bit I’ll start shooting more. Last year I had 5 good shots and that was at 60 but I did terrible this year.

Day six, 4 fletch max stealth, 100 gr outsert, 100 grain magnus black hornet. 620 gr total arrow wieght at 263 fps.

Day one was slightly breezy otherwise perfect.

Day 2 -Jacked up my thumb today before i shot. It was painful to shoot and it showed. Little windy and overcast.

Day 3- Same weather as day 2. Thumb still jacked as well as general soreness from laying down a motorcycle.

Day 4 was sunny mostly calm. Took the brush cutter back to my range and got it all cleared out. Pretty muddy here.

Day 5. Windy and sunny.

I'm new to the archery game and have been shooting around 200 arrows a week since purchasing my first compound bow in Feb.

I am shooting:
Hoyt Pro Defiant 34 #70 at 29 inches
Axis 340, 16gn insert, with Ironwill 100gn solid heads and 25gn collar, 3 fletch left helical Max Stealth vanes, firenock.
Carter too simple release



I am on crutches at the moment and was planning to shoot for a 1inch kill zone at 10 yards indoors. I think I am going to man up and do 30 or 40 yards from tomorrow despite the terrain so consider the first photo at 10 yards day zero (and a miracle!). Hope that is ok. If the rest of the week follows in this vein I will be one happy camper!!!



OK, so day 1.

Range: 40 yards to the bottom of the tree on the left. My first year bowhunting I won't be taking any shots longer than that. Kill zone is 6 inches. 2" Orange spot for aiming point.



Conditions day 1:


Target day 1:



Day 2: It's about 48 degrees with a 3mph breeze. I went outside in shorts and a t-shirt running late for work. Was cold and rushed the shot. Inexperience showing through. Poor shot about 1" outside the kill zone.



Day 3: Weather was a little chillier today, 39F with no wind. Today's shot is within a half inch of yesterdays. The shot felt good so I was a little surprised to be off by this much. I haven't really shot these broad heads at 40 yards before the CBC so we'll see if this grouping continues through the week and tuning is an issue.



Day 4: 51F with a light swirling breeze. Shot felt good. A little low and to the right but in the KZ.



DAY 5: 55F with minimal breeze. I felt like the bow was shooting low so I aimed a little higher today and overshot a bit. Sneaked it in the KZ by a hair though.



Lessons learnt by the rookie from this exercise.

1. Even the fanciest Gucci fixed broad heads won't fly 100% with field points without a dialled in bow.

2. Not having good experiences with a local pro shop I bought a press, made a draw board and made my own arrows. Despite watching a bunch of you tube videos and reading a load of articles I lack confidence to mess with my bow too much. I need to bite the bullet and document the bow as is, mess with stuff more and shoot it to see what works and what doesn't.

3. Shoot broad heads a lot more before season arrives.

4. Don't rush shots and go through proper shot sequence regardless of the circumstances. Looking back I can say I didn't properly build back tension to release on any of the 5 days as I was so eager to get a score on the board. I've been gun hunting since I was 4 so I don't really experience a lot of target panic but rushing has a more dramatic effect on your shot with a bow.

My MER is 60 yards. I'll shoot at one spot from a NFAA 5-spot target. The outside of the black is a touch over 6 inches in diameter.

Day 1
60F, winds light, sky clear.

Day 2
60F, wind 5 mph at my back, sky clear.

Within an inch of where I shot yesterday.

Day 3
60F, wind 10 mph right to left, sky clear.

I released a touch high and the wind shows up in my left hit from the previous two days.

Day 4
85F, wind 15 mph left to right, clear.

I made a lazy shot up and down and the wind pushed it to the right.

Day 5
85F, wind 15 at my back, clear.

Closer to my first couple days.

OK.
I picked my MER at 60 yards. I'm going to shoot a Hoyt Pro Defiant, 29 1/2 in draw at 68.65 lbs.(limb bolts down tight),tight spot 5 arrow quiver with three arrows in it. Fuse stabilizer, QAD HDX rest, MBG 5 pin slider sight. My arrows are Gold Tip Hunter Pro 300, 30 1/2" Blazers, 50 gr aluminum insert and 125 gr Kudupoint broadhead. 499 gr total.
I plan on switching bows sometime in the 5 days to my back up bow a Powermax same setup.


Target is a Rhinhart 18-1 painted over with a 10" circle drawn with a sharpie and a 1" dot in the center. Target
specie is elk.

A little high and right but I'll take it.

Day two

A little left but still in my circle. No excuses. I found after the shot that my Tight Spot quiver bracket had come loose and the quiver had swung bottom forward. Don't know if that threw the shot or not but again, NO EXCUSES. My fault either way.

Day 4. Little windy, 13 mph. Switched up to my back up bow the Powermax. Was real happy with the shot.


Last day! #5. No wind today but it is raining steady. Shooting the Powermax again. (back up bow?)
Still not bad, a little to the right but it is done. All five days in the vitals so I'm happy.

Alright, I was able to sneak out before the wife woke up on Mother's Day. Compound set up is a Bowtech Cardon Icon 70#, 28.5" DL, BE Rampage .300 27" carbon to carbon. 51gr. half out with 50gr. of brass behind it, 3 Blazers and a 125 gr. G5 Stryker broadhead. 492 gr. total weight, I used a Trufire Edge thumb release. MER is 50 yards, 9 inch circle.
Trad set up is a Bear Grizzly 58", 50# at 28" and my DL is 28". Beeman Centershot 28.25" carbon to carbon, 20gr. insert, 3 4" feathers and a 200gr. VPA 3 blade broad head. Total weight 482 gr. MER 20 yards with a 9" circle.

Day 1 12 MAY 7:30 AM no wind 50ish degrees sun at my back.

Day 2 13 MAY not winning any awards today. Shot at 4:30 PM 87 degrees, 5mph wind quartering from right to left.


Day 3 82* no wind and cloudy. I seem to be consistently hitting low and left with the recurve, and completely missed today. Not sure what the issue is. Compound was better today though.

Day 4 68* 10mph wind right to left, cloudy and a sprinkle of rain. I had shot low with the compound the first and third day so I tried to aim a little higher, and shot high go figure. Trad bow went better though. Also found out you cant attach more than 10 images so I had to erase the non shooting ones.

Day 5 rain stopped so I was able to get my final shots in. 63 degrees, slight wind at my back and sunny. Definitely made me reevaluate what my true hunting MER is. I think I might do this again in August for 3-5 days so I have a good idea what my MER is before I go. Now off to the Full Draw Film show tonight.

So my MER for this is going to be 90 yards. I shots long range a lot and feel really confident past that. This is a really long shot and everything would have to be perfect for me to take it. But I wanted to challenge myself and see how I did. The only thing in my setup that will change is broadheads. I’m going to pick up some day six head next week when they come out. The circle in my morrel target is 6”.

Shot one May 12th 2pm
Cool cloudy and calm. Shot felt great. Definitely some nerves knowing if I screw up I’m going to look like an idiot haha. Day one went good and I’m completely satisfied with that. I’m guessing pressure will build daily.

Shot 2 May 13th 830pm
Sun setting and calm
Hit a little high again. Happy with the shot, but I did raise the sight two clicks since that’s two days in a row high.

Day 3 May 14th 845 pm Calm cloudy and sun setting. Pretty low light for long range. Peep looks huge in low light and can ad a factor that can really mess you up. I practice in low light a lot so I was prepared for it. Still a little high but very happy with it. Here’s a pic of light conditions also. Pressure is building. Two more days!

Day 4 May 15th 700pm. Calm sunny and a ton of gnats!

Day 5 May 17 900am

Sunny wind 10-15 mph coming from left to right but quartering hard from my backside. Nothing felt good, couldn’t make the shot go off the first time. I let down, drew again, watched my pin float cover most of the target and executed my shot. Shot went off great but I new that my pin wasn’t where I wanted it at all. I was holding my breath waiting to hear it hit to be completely honest. It’s always that last arrow that ruins the group! Anyways this was a good challenge and I’m happy with every shot but today’s. Thanks rokslide for putting it on. I’ll be back next year!!!!

I have a month old Bowtech SR6, it was a warranty replacement so I never saw the card that has the max draw weight, but it is probably a pound or three over 70lbs and set to 30". Gold Tip Pierce 250s cut to 28", Ethics Archery 110gr insert and collar, 125gr point, 3 Q2i-ish vanes gets me to about 545grs. Hamskea Trinity and Raptor, Spot Hogg Fast Eddie 5 pin, BeeStinger 12" with 3oz on the end, Tight Spot 7 Arrow, and a Tru Fire Max Pro.

The Recurve is a Rose Oak Puma 58", 53lbs@28" drawn to about 31.5" gets me to 62ish lbs. Gold Tip Pierce 250s cut to 31", Ethics Archery 110gr insert and collar, 250gr point and three 4.5" feathers gets me to 670grs. Thunderhorn Linx quiver, and American Leathers glove. Olive Wood and Ziricote are what I choose for the riser with Ziricote veneers on the limbs.

Field points only at the club.

I shot Day One (05/12/2019) with the kid in the Seek Outside/Deuter hybrid. 73 yards for the compound and 35 yards for the recurve.




Day 2 (05/14/2019) no kid and nothing remarkable.


Day 3 (05/16/2019) no kid, there was some swirly wind but arrow flight looked good and the arrow hit behind the dot when the release let go.


Day 4 (05/17/2019) no kid and a wonderful Colorado morning.


Day 5 (05/20/2019) some drizzle and what not.

Cold Bow Challenge Day #1 for me. Honestly this is probably the 10th time I have shot my bow out at 40 yards but I don’t think it was that bad and since I’m pretty new at bows anyways I’m kinda happy with the result. Wind was blowing and I compensated a little much but the height was on point. Shooting my Mathews 2019 Vertix at 55 pounds, Carbon Express Mayhem SDS Arrow. Still no stabilizer but that’s how I have been shooting this thing for months now. Maybe I should get one idk
Day # 2. Better shot today cold damp morning. No wind.
Day #3 for me, tuning it in. Cold no wind. I need to shoot like this more.
Alright boys brace yourself. Day #4 wasn’t a good shot and neither was Day #5. I felt day # 4s shot and I felt myself push my bow up so that’s why I had a high shot but day # 5 felt good but obviously was low lol. That’s my last shot but I’m going to get my bow tuned and keep at this! I really enjoyed this and it did help me learn a lot!

I'm in, day 1 for me...

Different year for me. I am shooting way less this year than I have in the past after taking all winter off due to an injury. But, this should make it a little more realistic, right?

Calling 74 yards because I have a convenient shooting spot at my range on the way to work. And, I really want to see if I can make it happen with less practice. I'm basing the kill zone off a broadside Elk, which gives me a slightly bigger target..

Bow is a Prime Logic CT5, 29.5" Draw, 72lb, shooting a Black Eagle Rampage 300 with a SEVR mechanical.

The Shot:

Day 1: Clear, Sunny, 6:30 am. Had the jitters a little and missed about 5.5" from center - right and a little high, still a kill shot. Shooting at the target at an angle so a little hard to measure exact, even harder trying to hold the tape measure and get a picture...

Day 2: Crappy weather. Rain with wind gusting to 20 mph. The wind did die down for my shot, and shot went off with the pin a hair high. Thought I might have gotten a little more drop, arrow hit dead behind the pin. Just under 5" high. Still a kill shot.

Day 3: This one bugs me, and I think the type of miss that I'm looking to clean up with more practice. Clear and sunny, but rushed the shot and didn't hit behind the pin. Until now, I was thinking my sight might need to be moved a click right. But, under 6" from center even if it blows up my normal groups...

Day 4:

Gorgeous and sunny. But, sun was directly in my eye and on the peep, target in the shade so a tougher shot. Pin was a little left when the shot went off - less than 4" off center. Don't want to go to work, I could really use some range therapy to relax.....

Day 5:

I'm done.. Rainy and crappy, good shot though

So, not completely happy how I shot, and I think I can clean this up with a summer of practice with my hinge and tension releases, but at the end of the day - 5 kill shots with a broadhead...

Shooting 40 yards since that’s where I am most comfortable.

I’m using a Hoyt Nitrum 30 @65lbs. Shooting Easton Axis 340gr Customs from Blackovis.com. I’m also shooting slick trick viper tricks.

Day1: Cool sunny day and breezy, shot felt great. Bonus Vizsla pup in the pic.

Day 2: Need to keep my 2nd target backing so I don’t put a hole in my shed lol sunny calm day and just drilled the target.

Day 3: This is what we call rushing the shot! Nice day yesterday and breezy. Didn’t take enough time and pulled a little bit! Not a terrible shot but I can do better!

Day 4: Warm and breezy. Shot kneeling with my pack on, shot a hair high but pretty solid!

Day 5: Cool and windy as hell here in ND. Shot again with my pack on this time standing. All in all pretty happy with these groupings for my first shots of the year! Now to built back up those back muscles! Thanks again Rokslide and sponsors, please pick me
