Day 1

Well went in Friday morning with a buddy to try and find some berries below the snow. We got an early start and climbed up over the ridge through the snow and dropped down into another basin. We were in the 1st meadow by daylight. We hunted most of the morning without seeing a thing. Almost all the open berry fields are covered by snow, so we dropped down and hunted the open timber that still had berries hanging on. We were walking slowly through the timber with plans of heading out towards the truck. I spotted a bear at less than 30 yards after coming around a tree. I wasn't exactly ready, rifle over the shoulder and no round in the chamber. I chambered a round and amazingly the bear just continued to stand broadside looking at us. Put one behind the shoulder with the 300 win and hunting buddy grazed his back with the 300 ultra mag as he dove into the bushes. He didn't make it far, piled up about 5 yards into the bushes. Just under an hr later we were packing 5 miles uphill back to the truck. On the way out we spotted a decent boar working the hillside, he was about 340 yards but fed into the timber before we could get set up. we tried to call him down but no luck.

Day 2

the next morning (opening day modern deer) we went in to find the other bear. We couldn't find him in the morning so we continued to where i had shot my bear the day previous due to all the berries still there. As we were coming out in the afternoon at about 3 Pm we spotted him again a little further up the valley across the draw from us. He was about 300 yards out and no getting closer so we set up. My buddy spotted him and drilled him with the first shot with the 300 ultra Mag. He staggered and I followed up instantly with another shot and he was down. 1st shot spined him good 2nd shot hit the shoulder. We made our way over and got him cleaned up. I am amazed at how little these fat fall bears bleed. Had that bear ran even with two hits from magnum calibers there would have been no blood trail.View attachment 10994View attachment 10995

nice!.... cool to see higher bears being taken. i am working the salmon streams, located massive bear sign and pumped for the weekend, mother natures baits are beautiful........ crazy those larger cals didnt just make him drop. ill be using my grandpas pre 64 model 70 in 308 with my son, will be 3 generations in the woods in a way.

one more thing the Kifaru Bikini/highcamp was well worth the money. After hiking about 24 miles and packing 2 bears in two days the only thing sore was my legs! no shoulder or back pain. Last year I packed 3 bears and a deer (heaviest pack weight 94 Ibs) with a badlands 2200 and my shoulders were killing me every time....

a bikini with a DT1 will be my next pack. my tenzing tz5000 shreds me just going in....... glad to hear there is promise for smooth hauling.

I mentioned the pack because I tried several packs and was having trouble dropping that much on a pack due to all the gear I needed to get this year. It is a great pack and I think it was money well spent.
