But there is no bear in the story….
My wife has the bear tag, and we have been hunting a really big boar we saw last spring, he’s still around, but there are a lot of places he could be any given day, so he’s been hard to run into, but she’s all about it, and it’s fun hunting a particular bear, so that’s what we have been doing, hopping around from habitat to habitat knowing we will eventually be where he is.
Last night we go back to the original area we were hunting him, and his tracks are for sure in there, he does spend time there.
We get a good vantage point, wind is good, and we have good options to stalk once we see him (shotgun/archery only area so we are packing the 20ga slug gun)
We hadn’t been there long and I hear crashing directly in front of us in the timber, just out of sight, I tell her it’s either an elk or a big bear, and it sounded like too much crashing to be an elk, then a couple minutes later we hear an elk barking, so now I tell her there is either a bear or lion that spooked that elk, so pay attention.
A couple minutes later, my wife says “cougar, it’s a huge cougar, and it’s coming right to us” I am asking her where, and she’s being a little too vague
, but I get her to be more specific and I get on him, and holy crap, it’s not just a lion, but it’s legit massive, maybe the biggest one I’ve seen… huge
He is coming out of the timber, into the clear cut, and going right into a saddle, and is going to pop up on a little clay road that will bring him by us at 60yds.
I have the lion tag, so I need to get things going pretty quick, so I grab the gun and slide left so I will have a clear shot when he gets on our side, he’s 100yds and closing.
When I scoot over, I sat on a little branch and it broke, and he heard it, not thinking about anything but bear, we didn’t set up with much cover, and we were right in the sun, and he say my wife (I was behind a little fir tree) and he crouched down for 5+ minutes and just stared, after what seemed like forever, he slunk back into the timber.
Had it been a rifle area, I would have killed him well before, but as luck would have it, we set up thinking bear and not a lion, and got stuck in the open and turned it into a close call rather than a huge cat with a slug gun.
It was still an awesome encounter, and my wife was able to get a really good show, she was using the new Zulu 6’s and was able to watch it for several minutes through them.
We are going back tonight and calling, if that cat had a kill in there, we have a really good chance at killing him, if not, we might call in that big bear.
I have not seen that lion’s track before last night, but if we don’t get him called in, I will be hunting him coming up, he is a giant. Kind of a heart breaker, but pretty awesome encounter. Aside from the lions I’ve called in, that was one of the coolest lion encounters I’ve had
