12 year old son drew 46-2 Trophy Bull Tag

We will be out the month of December looking to find him one of those big desert bulls roaming around. Buddy had the tag last year and we spent a lot of time in the northern part of the inside desert. Didn't find as many big bulls as we thought. Towards the end headed clear down to the southern Part of the Diamond A and got into elk. Was thinking about starting off at the Diamond A this year. Will be looking for a good bull but not going to make him hold out for a once in a lifetime type elk. Will be looking for a good mature 320 class bull for him. Should be fun - time to get the Side by Side some new tires and a few upgrades to make the search a bit more enjoyable.

I drew a really good tag when I was 15- the second year I was legal to hunt back then. I wasn't asked to hold out much and in general had a great, successful hunt. 30 years later I haven't drawn again. No regrets really but sure wish I had been better informed. Looking back I wouldn't have shot on the second morning of a 7 day hunt had I known I probably wouldn't get the tag again. Good luck to you!

I totally agree with this. The two best tags (by a wide margin) I have have had in my lifetime were both youth hunts and I had no idea how blessed I was to have them. Looking back I wish I would have had a better idea of the rarity of the opportunity so I could have put more effort/time in. I don't think stressing a kid out is a great idea, but definitely get him pumped for his hunt and try to spend as much time as possible enjoying it!

Given your deer success and elk being so dumb as the deer studs like to emphasize, might as well harvest by lasso and strangulation for the increased challenge. Just being ridiculous.

Get cozy with the bio. If you want I can tell you who I’d focus on in the the Twin Falls Office. Some characters and some I trust more than others on expertise.

Our summer will involve lots of shooting practice...That desert can provide some long challenging, windy shots...He also drew a Wyoming Cow tag on a ranch in October, so he should have already killed an elk and got some of the jitters out before this hunt starts.

I will need to reach out the Biologist because I had heard there are quite a few elk to the east towards Castleford but never really spent much time out that way.

On a side note, he also drew the late season 39 youth extra doe tag. So my son very well could shoot 2 deer and 2 elk this year....

Had the tag last year as well. The otc tags just outside private really killed that hunt. I was on diamond A early, well really everywhere and hardly an elk. Went back just after Christmas and found bulls. Passed on many up to 320. Missed a giant last day. Fun hunt but tough as you know. Good luck, I hope he has a great time. Enclosed utv with a heater is the only way to go.
