I put the side parallax 10x mil on our t1x and 22br. No clue if there's a durability difference, but I like that better than the ocular adjustment versions.

Something no one has mentioned it that the 10x swfa has a very finicky eye box. It is not an easy scope to get behind quickly. I find this much more of an issue than field of view.

I have several swfa's (2 10x, 1 6x, 2 3-9). The 10x is my least favorite. It's okay on the bench but I get eye strain if I shoot with it too long. Wait for the 6x or a 3-9 for hunting.

Hm well I haven't found the SWFA 10X eyebox to be finicky. One of the reasons I like it is it's easy to get behind. I also have the 6X.

Your rangefinder has less field of view than your "10x" scope? Yeah, whatever. It's clear my opinion isn't worth anything here. Your credibility is shot with me. I'll just be on my way, it aint worth it.
Perhaps change name to NoviceShooter?

Nope. Not hard to get behind at all on my Fieldcraft.

I have several SWFA 6x42s and two 3-9x42s.

6x42s are my favorites, but not once have I thought "Man, this 10x42 is hard to use."

Different strokes I guess. My 6x and 3-9's have a much better eye box to me.

Nothing really, just a deer that I had to make a shot. 4x at 40 yards the deer fills up most of the field of view. Practice or not, using too much magnification is a liability. Fixed power is never an asset.
I killed two whitetails last year at 30 and 50 yards with SWFA fixed 6. Zero issues with proper sight picture and both kills, from from shouldering the rifle to shot, were less than 5 seconds. One in thick woods and one on the edge of the woods.

I don't think you're using your equipment properly, or practicing enough. 4X at 40 yards should be a non-issue.

Edit: Just caught up on the thread... WOW!

Target acquisition is a skill. A competent shooter won’t have issues shooting deer at 10x plenty close. Someone who hasn’t spent the time with the scope could have issues. Same can be said for the 6x as well.

I have a 10x on my varmint rifle and regularly shoot stuff sub 25 yards.

I have not found this to be true. I shoot the 10x on my NRL22 gun. If I had trouble getting behind it quickly, it wouldn’t work very well for NRL22.

This is 9X on a horse at 43 yards according to my Meopta range finding binos which have proven to be very accurate.

What kind of hunting? Stand? Open field? Stalking? Thick brush? Does the hunter take shots on runners?

Obviously, the 10x will come in handy on a stand overlooking a field. In my parts, it's extremely manageable from a stand, even at 15 yds. As an example, I stand hunt in the woods and over fields. I don't shoot runners. If I can't do it slow and easy, I don't take the shot. When I used a 3-9x, it never came off 9x and if I wished for anything, it was more power. For my use, a 10x will always work.

For a stalking hunter, I can see the issues with shake and unexpected close encounters without a rest. I'd probably want a 4x, then.

It's just a matter of application. Not everybody has the same one.

It could be your particular scope. My 6X has some fisheye. I'm going to play with it's adjustments before I make any conclusions.

Rokslide: Nobody should use more than 1x per 100 yards.

Also Rokslide: 25x per 100 yards is very usable.

This place is funny sometimes. I'm going into the woods with a 6x for the first time this year; I dont think its going to be any trouble but I'll definitely practice my presentation. If they made a fixed 4x, I'd probably have one of those.

To provide some visual context to this thread, these are very large pack goats- as large as large deer. 40 yards away.

4x

Hardly- “4x at 40 yards the deer fills up most of the field of view”

The 10x SWFA that is the subject of this thread-

You can fit about two of them in the FOV-

10x is not optimum for 40 yard shots on moving large game, however it is far from not usable for it. 10x at 100 yards is the same as 4x at 40 yards- easy.
This is very helpful as I try to figure out which rifles my 6x, 10x and 3x9 go on. Thank you. 10x isn't as limiting as I thought it might be.
