I had an 09 5.4 I dumped because of valve timing issues. It seemed to get worse mileage over time, but the real killer was when the engine started misfiring all of the time and I couldn't get the problem diagnosed and fixed. I kept up on maintenance extremely well, still had issues. I wouldn't do it.....

I go through alot of vehicles for work, mostly heavier (1 1/2 tons down to 3/4's) trucks but have owned a handful of 1/2 tons since 1999. Don't buy a diesel unless you absolutely need it (which it sounds like you probably don't if you're just pulling a clackacraft). as far as 1/2rs go

I had a 2002 ford that was a nightmare of issues
I had an 04 that had valve or lifter issues and I got rid of.... it sounded like a diesel
Dodge 1/2 tons have tended to have great motors but crummy trannys
GM's have gotten the best gas mileage out of them all... I've gotten into the 20's with a 5.3

I currently have a nissan titan pro-4x for basically a shop/parts/errand truck. It has been a downright work horse and pulls like a 3/4 ton. Mines a 09 I believe. I got it through kind of a unique situation with a friend who was hard up for $$ and needed to dump it. I grabbed it cause I needed one and this fit the bill, otherwise I probably wouldn't have looked at it. It has been arguably the best truck I've ever bought.

I would only get a titan if it were a pro-4x. They had a selectable rear locking diff which is a HUGE deal once you have it. The other model of titans didn't (may have changed that at some point)

+1 for a locking rear differential. Open rear differentials suck, especially when you start wandering off-road, or even onto a forest service road.

GM offers one - the G80 - and it is an auto locker, standard on the Z71 4x4 models and optional on others. I know it has a reliability issue, but that is most common when people lift their truck and put oversized tires on (33" x 12.50" and up).

Likewise, if you buy a truck that does not have a factory locker, you can get aftermarket models. Eaton (Detroit) is a popular brand.
