    New mountain rifle considerations

7 SAW looks sweet, I’m just not 100% dedicated to reloading yet. Vortex has a good #10minutetalk where they basically say the .243 and 6cm are comparable, 6cm more efficient, .243 a little more powder, similar terminal performance. Thanks again.

Fair point, I’ve seen a lot of posts with 400yd + elk kills with the 7mm-08, but would you use a 6cm/6.5cm on elk personally? Still not questioning that lots of folks get it done with less. 7mm-08 does deliver a little more energy with a larger diameter bullet with little recoil trade off...

Does energy not matter? Is it truly just terminal velocity and bullet selection I need to consider? Am I thinking about this wrong?

    New mountain rifle considerations

I’m thinking about going another direction. Leading thought is a 7mm-08 t3x superlite, thread and drop into a lightweight folder (XLR comes to kind) topped with a Swaro Z6i 1.7-10. I’ll keep the sako 30-06 stock as a light weight elk gun (I don’t generally apply for elk, mostly building points...

What cartridge did you go with? I was looking at these too, custom performance off the shelf. Good luck on your sheep hunt!

Thanks for this. The sako 85 takes a t3x prefit barrel but the action won’t fit in a t3x chassis.

https://www.outdoorlife.com/guns/6-5-prc-vs-6-5-creedmoor/ Just circled back to some the creedmoor vs PRC articles and I found this useful. I haven’t looked into it since I got my PRC. The PRC is ~350 fps faster with the same barrel length, but a 24” creedmoor is effectively the same gun as a...

    New mountain rifle considerations

I was doing some more research on PRC vs Creedmoor. I’m realizing that my PRC was using a 24” barrel vs his 20” creedmoor and that may have been more of a factor than a little more powder. To your point though, it could have been a number of things, totally agree my experience is a small sample...

I was looking really hard at this exact rifle actually!

Appreciate the comment - have a Finnlight 85 in 30-06 (5.75# bare) and 300WM (8.25# scoped and braked), my local range has steel out to 600. I’ve practiced with both out there, just don’t appreciate the recoil after a few rounds. I’ve never shot an animal past 400yds but consistently practice...

I was expecting 6.5 creedmoor to be the number 1 recommendation but I’ve seen aoudad soak creedmoor ELD-x’s where my PRC has anchored them. It’s anecdotal at best but I’d personally like to be a little over gunned cartridge wise because I’m looking at a shorter barrel. I also like the idea of...

    New mountain rifle considerations

Hi guys - considering building my first full custom/semi custom rifle. Looking for some reassurance. Requirements: -Finished weight under 6lb. Where I hunt is desert/canyonland and 20 miles in a weekend isn’t uncommon. -Barrel length of 20-22” because I’ll be threading on a 6” Scythe-Ti. -600...

Yeah I was originally gifted the 7200 with frame and suspension, so I didn’t want to get a whole new system. I’ve been looking at the metcalf.

    Backpack for 2-3 Days

Hi everyone, I am headed on an archery mule deer hunt in Colorado. My plan is to camp roughly 5-5.5 miles from the trailhead based on where I’m hoping to hunt. I’ve done day trips scouting. My longest stay is going to be 2 nights for a Monday PM, Tuesday AM/PM, Wednesday AM hunt, then I need...

    Compact Spotter

Ran it for a scouting trip a few weeks ago, and loved it. Picked out a bear at 1700 yards, and got some neat videos with it.

I ended up with a demo ATC for about $2050. Worst case, I can resell. Close runner up was a demo KOWA-55A for $2100 (available at Cameraland right now). Thanks yall!

I do have a rangefinder I use while bow hunting but I’ve been able to get the Steiners to range at 1300+ on a bright day and I know my little $250 rf can’t. I’m not sure what handheld rfs can do nowadays. I’m not married to the Steiners though. Probably no weight savings between having 2...

The only thing that drew me away from the Kowa 553/554 was the FOV, even if you say razor loses 20% edge to edge it’s still ahead in “clear” FOV. Maybe the Kowa glass makes up for it? How much does this even matter? FOV below are at min/max power at 1000 yards for each. 553/554 - 132/69’...
