I have to agree with GKPrices' sentiments. I've been fortunate to do a lot of long range shooting, and an awful lot of medium range- 6-800 yards. I've had three Montana's, several standard weights, and currently have an 8 lb scoped custom 270 WSM. My experience has been that once ranges start...
I've been shooting a custom 270 WSM for a few years. Stiller action, Jewell trigger, Satern 26" #4 fluted barrel, Manners carbon fiber stock, regular old Talley steel rings/bases, and a NF 2.5-10x32. Weighs just a hair over 8 lbs. I've been shooting Berger 140 VLD's because they shoot half MOA...
My Schmidt Bender PMII 4-16x50 weighs 33oz. Resolution, clarity, etc. have been good enough for shooting (at) marmots at a mile. Turrets have been spot on and numerous marmots between 1000 and 1402 yards have been taken over the past couple years. Swaro is excellent, but it's not SB... IMO.
I've had 5 Coopers, and still have two. Great rifles. I sold two to fund a custom long range rifle, then replaced one with another custom for my elk rifle. I could have saved a bunch and had just as accurate rifle in another Cooper. I've become spoiled on accurate rifles, and really like ultra...
I first tried an alcohol stove made from a pop can over 10 years ago. Been using nothing else since... except to replace the stove a few times. No noise, no smoke, no wet wood (I have a small wood stove too). The one I currently use is still only about 1 oz.
Funny you put it that way. I was at our local long range shoot (200-800 yards), last weekend. My spotter is a Minox MD 50 compact I bought for a goat hunt. Several guys looked through it, mounted on the Outdoorsmans, and commented the scope had surprising optics for such a little scope. No one...
I've always used cheap pan heads until I bought an Outdoorsmans tripod with their pan head last month. I never knew how good my spotter really was until I mounted it in a solid tripod with this head. A few buddies have used it and are replacing their tripods/heads now with Outdoorsmans.
That's a big goat waterrat, congrats!
I did take mine with a Kimber .243. Another rifle I had planned to use developed problems just before the hunt, and I didn't want to use the .358 STA I had. I didn't have time to for load development as I was using the .243 with 58 gr V-Max's as a varmint...
I hunt in western CO and out on the high desert of eastern Utah. Glassing is frequently a long range proposition. This year I upgraded my ultralight 10x25 Zeiss binos to 10 X 42 Zeiss Victory FL's and mount them on an Outdoorsmans tripod. I've glassed mulies on the ridge above my house about a...
After using scopes with zero stop I wouldn't have one intended for long range that didn't have that feature. Swaro makes great glass, now if their turrets are dead accurate and repeatable these could be great scopes. I've found Nightforce to have reliable turrets, and my Schmidt Bender has...
