Would a Singer 401A be a good starting machine? Here in Fairbanks, Alaska there is not many places to look/buy machines. You can buy new ones but I don't want to invest a lot at first until I see I can/like sewing. I have found a couple of Singer 401A that are fairly cheap and shipping isn't to...
It would just be used for my personal use and I would like to be able to sew some thicker stuff. I would like to learn to make some of my own gear. Also, the sewing will all be new to me so I don't need a super fancy one.
I second the BPWD stove jack. I just had them install one in my Luna 6 and I like the extra flap that lays up against the pipe to redirect any water running down from the top.
I talked with the owner of VIAM today and he will make a 0* quilt. He will be adding it to his website soon and he uses 10 ounce climashield for the 0* quilt. Seems like a very nice guy and was very helpful.
That is what I'm working on now. I will be trying to call some places tomorrow to see what insulation/weight of insulation they use. If it's the same as others, then where is the difference in rating coming from?
Not trying to start a fight but when the sponsoring company says they want make you a synthetic quilt rated for lower then the 20* one they sell, then you look elsewhere for what you want/need. I'm not saying they are not a good company by no means, they just don't have what I am looking for.
Thanks gentlemen for all the replies and info. I have always used mummy style sleeping bags but I toss and turn a lot in my sleep and usually end up sleeping on my side. I also will be buying a new sleeping pad. I just gave my son my new Exped WinterLite pad that I bought last year. It was a...
mavmskyb8,
Thanks for the info and if you don't mind what was the temps for your hunt? Do you feel the temp rating is pretty accurate on the VIAM? Thanks
I may have to give VIAM a call about the 0* quilt. I would like to hear more about it price, weight and bulk wise. I would rather have to much then not enough. It seems it would be very easy to vent the quilt for cooling off if you got to hot.
I have a BPWD Luna 6 and I really like it. I know you are not looking for something like it but the craftsmanship if very good. I would not hesitate to buy from them again if I needed to.
The EE Prodigy only goes down to 20* were as the VIAM goes down to 10*. I hear that EE ratings are pretty accurate but I'm not sure about VIAM. Cost wise they are about the same price.
Does anybody have experience with both of these quilts? If not what about the VIAM quilts? I have heard/read a lot about the EE quilts. Thanks for any help.
I am in the same boat kinda. I have been thinking about trying a quilt myself but can't make up my mind on whether to go with down or synthetic. I live in Fairbanks, Alaska and like to do float hunts and fly-out hunts. I have made the switch over to a floorless tent and use a bivy to put my...
