Getting a custom 4 man tipi built and was curious what you guys with more experience thought about the differences between having the stove jack run up along the center pole and out the top or have it come out the side towards the bottom?

My biggest concern is having rain dripping in during bad rain storms....this set up is going to see a lot of rain

I see advantages to both but can't make up my mind

Thanks for any and all thoughts

In a tipi, the center pole creates a dead space that you have to move around. It just makes sense to have the stove in that general area too so you don't have to avoid two objects in the shelter.

Plus the fact you have a pole, the more pipe within the shelter the more captured heat within it.

But when it does finally drip in will it be dripping all over me since it's in the center? Is there some tricks to getting things more rain proof ??

Guessing you've never been around one, it won't drip in but you can make a flap of the same material used for the stove Jack to flap up and against the pipe so it directs water away from the pipe. This is how the bear paw wilderness design stove jacks come ready to be sewn in.

Also when you cut your hole for the pipe just make slits that are a hair bigger then the pipe diameter, don't cut a hole in the stove Jack, it should look like a star made by straight lines if that makes sense.

Look at where seek outside and kifaru place their stove jacks, there is a reason for it.

Yeah I have nearly zero experience with tipis....sounds like I'm over thinking it

Thanks for the input !

Yeah we all tend to do that :). I highly recommend getting a premise ready to install stove Jack from bear paw wilderness designs.

I second the BPWD stove jack. I just had them install one in my Luna 6 and I like the extra flap that lays up against the pipe to redirect any water running down from the top.
