I use Kenetrek waterproofing Boot Wax on my nubuck Kenetrek Mountain Extremes and my newer Asolo Sasslongs. Both have glued on rubber rands and, according to Kenetrek, it "will not harm glued-on rubber rands" at least according to their label. And, it has not harmed the rubber rand on either...
Shrek, here is the lacing system I have found to work best on my Asolo's and I use a variation of it on my Kenetrek Mountain Extremes. It does work well for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lHbsE89ces
Shrek, have you tried using a sock liner? My Kenetreks are extremely comfortable boots, but I too experienced heel slippage on my left foot. I have fairly narrow heels and after finding the best fitting insoles (I tried 3 different ones), I finally fixed the problem once and for all with a...
Although I have a couple of good dry sacks, I use waterproof pack covers on both of my main packs. They stay in the top lid and are quick and easy to use.
Muleman, I haven't used it in real cold weather yet, so I can't say for sure. I will probably take my Big Agnes insulated air core on an upcoming 2nd rifle season Elk hunt in CO just in case.
I use a Therm-A-Rest Ultra Lite cot. It weighs 2lbs 12oz and the pack size is 15"x6". At 62, my bones just doesn't like the hard ground anymore. The cot keeps you 4.5" off the ground. It has taken the place of the two pads I've carried for the past 3 years and takes up less space.
I'm sorry you are having problems. I've had my Big Agnes insulated Air Core for nearly 3 years now and have not had any problems with mine whatsoever. I use mine primarily for winter hunting and it goes inside my bivy so, it is protected. However, I've used it a couple of times in the open...
Not necessarily the lightest, but Integral Designs makes a couple of eVent bivy's that weight from 16 to 23 oz. I have their Bugaboo model which has only been rained on once but I stayed completely dry as did my bag. Condensation in the bivy is minimal but I usually use mine with the Integral...
I'm a novice but, I have to agree with the Bugler. I really like the Bugling Bull Game Calls. My favorite is the Select "A" Bull Calling System #114. It is a little large to carry around but, the call is realistic and easy to use. I also use a Hoochie Mama call (I have to confess I've only...
The footbeds that work best for me are the Spenco Earthbound's. I've tried 3 different, popular, brands before settling on the Earthbound's. I have a high arch and the support they provide is the best I've found. They aren't cheap but, they are well made. I have a pair in my Kenetrek Mountain...
Last year, I hunted elk outside my comfort zone when I backpacked in nearly 3 miles carrying a 60 lb plus pack, climbing over 2,000 ft in altitude from a trail head started at 8,600 ft in altitude. It didn't take long to realize that at 61, I was too old for the adventure. My hunting buddy and...
I have a Kifaru G2 Longhunter, Eberlestock J-34 and a couple of other packs including an LL Bean Carryall. The Carryall isn't in the same class as my other packs but, based on its cost, it is a good buy. It only suffers in two areas; load lifters and a belt. That said, it carries 50 to 55...
They work great as a floor in a floorless tent. On one occasion when it forgot my bivy sack, I wrapped it around my down sleeping bag when condensation became a problem. They are too light not to have one in my pack.
Got my order today and I am very happy with the purchase. The merino wool is heavier than I expected (heavier than my Red Ram lightweights). Thumb holes in the top were also a feature I didn't expect. Although the waist is a bit bigger than my Smart Wool and Red Ram base layers in the same...
