OKhunter, I too live in OK and often hunt in SW part of the state where rattlers are common, especially when hunting hogs in late spring through early fall. Several year ago, I tried a pair of snake boots but they were just too uncomfortable and didn't work for me. For the past 4 years, I've...
I have hunted in 4 different states that require hunters (blaze) orange either on the head, above the waist (vest) or both, during rifle seasons for deer and elk. If given the choice, I prefer wearing a hat or cap only. My personal favorite is a blaze orange Stormy Kromer, and depending on...
I have long been sold on the benefits of merino wool base layers and I recently ordered a pair of Kanab's for a CO 2nd rifle season hunt. I've worn them twice now on backpacking ventures this summer and they were fairly comfortable. Even though they were a bit warm, they did breathe well and I...
I have a Seek Outside large titanium stove and use a GSI Halulite kettle set and an older Texsport copper bottom fry pan. These two pieces stack (pack) together nicely, are fairly light and I can easily cook for two with this setup. Both heat very evenly and cook well.
I have 4 backpacks including a Kifaru Longhunter G2 with Duplex setup and a less expensive Eberlestock J34. The Longhunter is a great hunting pack with incredible load lifters and the ability to carry heavier loads. But, after some minor adjusting of the pack, it just didn't ride comfortably...
In my opinion clothing preference is much like boots, and other gear. What is warm, comfortable and functional for me may not be so for others. I can't imagine anything more comfortable and versatile than my First Lite Kanabs. I will use them on elk and deer hunt in temps from teens and 20's...
I definitely suggest adjustable poles. If I'm carrying a load while backpacking, I use two poles. If I'm hiking, I only use one, and I extend it to the length that best fits the terrain.
I have several pieces of Gore-Tex rain gear for hunting and it works well for days when it rains for a few hours at a time. Beyond this, I usually get damp or down-right wet. Over 10 years ago, I found a rip-stop nylon Eddie Bauer rain jacket that I slip on over my hunting jackets and it...
I too use a 2 liter source and a nalgene bottle. The nalgene bottle is kept in my sleeping bag overnight and is my initial water supply. It hopefully lasts until my backpack source thaws out. I've yet to find a better system during cold weather hunts in CO.
My Seek Outside large titanium stove conformed perfectly from the start. Prior to the first burn, it went together easily and after the 2nd full, "hot" burn, it still goes together nice and tight. I will be doing my 3rd burn this weekend and can't imagine that it will be any different. What...
I use green Superfeet with my Kenetrek Mount Extremes and orange Superfeet for my Asolo Sasslongs. I probably have 5 or 6 pairs of other brands I've tried but Superfeet have worked best for me. I have heard good things about Synergy foot beds and may have to get them a try when mine wear out.
I too dislike Crocs. I don't care for how they look and I never wear them out anywhere. However, they are hands down, my favorite camp shoe. What I like about them is that they are comfortable and enhance the drying process of my merino blend socks.
I have 3 different packs, including my Kifaru Longhunter, that have a ring on the upper part of the shoulder strap that works well for clipping on my Rino. I've used mine this way for 3 years now without any problems. When it gets really wet, it goes in a coat or vest pocket.
Sneek-ee, good review and thanks for sharing. I too, am a Kifaru fan as I have a 2nd gen. Longhunter which is a very fine pack which I like a lot. After a lot of reading and analyzing, I recently ordered a 6-man tipi and stove package from Kevin at Seek Outside. He and Angie were kind enough...
I'm an old guy who doesn't smoke, dip or drink hard stuff any more although, I did all three with a passion when I was younger. Now, I'm happy with a couple of glasses of a cheap Cab before turning in early from a hard day's hunt. Doc says red wine is good for the heart….I'm having a glass now.
I used mine in CO on a 2nd rifle season elk hunt in mid-October. We had 12" to 15" of snow on the ground and temps were in the low teens at night. We stayed in in a small wall tent with a floor. With my Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0 degree bag, I never got cold and slept very comfortably...
