Ok guys I have always been a mountain house kinda guy. Honestly never even tried backpackers pantry meals. I have had some desserts but never a meal. I have a buddy who can get me a big discount on the product and wondering if it's worth trying out. If so what's some of y'all favorites? Thanks!

I would say mountain house is better...backpackers pantry hasn't been the best imo...

I've got a few meals I bought last year that never made it outside of the house. Looking at the directions they all needed to simmer. That's too much fuel and pia imo. MH is boil , stir it in and let it sit , too easy and they're pretty good.

Tested them out vs. MH, no comparison. Backpacker Pantry are way more variable in calories, serving size, sodium, etc. than MH from flavor to flavor. They also take longer to rehydrate (according to package). Some of the BP flavors are good, I recall pad thai being tasty but the package was huge and sodium off the chart!

There was an article in Extreme Elk that reviewed dehydrated meals and BP was not at the top of the list thats for sure.

If you can get em way cheap, try a small selection if you can and decide for yourself. I use my leftover BP for car camping and backup. MH goes into the backcountry.

tried to give four away to a buddy of mine and he wouldn't take them. Second the simmer part, didn't read directions and 6 miles back had a horrible juevos rancheros for breakfast.

Sweet that answers that ! I love my mountain house but had to ask cause it seemed like a good deal

i cant eat them. BP.

several years ago, i made the mistake of buying a bunch of very similar flavors. like chili mac, and spagetti..lasagna. all of them, taste the same to me. they all also have a crazy aftertaste to me. i was eating chili mac. just trying to choke it down on the last night of a 50 miler. we were actually back to the car, but got in late and needed one more night before we could drive down the mountain.

that last package got me vomiting. it was that bad to me.

now, i just cant do it. i barely like the mountain house ones.

The chocolate cheesecake is to DIE for.... Seriously I can't really think of any homemade dessert that really tasted better. Great desserts I haven't tries meals yet.

Their cheesecake is great... Their granola and milk is excellent.

But most of their meals taste terrible.

Same experience as some others have had. Purchased some a few years ago and when at camp read that you should "cook over low heat in a nonstick pan". Won't purchase it again due to that. I prefer adding water and being done.

I tried BP chicken alfredo for the first time this weekend....HOLY SALT! lol MH arent amazing either but I think ill stick with MH when Im going dehydrated.

BP makes great desserts. I do have some BP meals that I do eat. The pad thai and lasagna aren't bad. You have to understand the food won't be gourmet.

I am working on making my own dehydrated food. But if feel limited in what I can produce, because I don't want fats going rancid or other opportunities for my food to go bad in storage or when I am in the woods. I also just flat out like some of the mountain house meals.

BP has never been at the top of my list because of cost. Recently it seems the cost is coming down, and you can even buy them at Walterworld here. I do like their deserts, and take one for every 3-4 days as a pick me up meal for if I am stuck in a downpour in the tent or hammock. When I take the kids, I take more desserts. I also have a cobbler (my favorite, I haven't tried the cheesecake) in my food bag specifically for breakfast the morning of the hike out.

If you have to carry water or are only going in for a few days," Tasty bites" taste great. Not super light but worth the penalty if you already have to carry water as they are not dehydrated.

What did the list look like?

Hmm... I'll see if I can find that one. Not sure if I still have the print copy. Takeaway: MH was tops. Wise foods actually did ok, and BP not so good on meals. I don't think they rated the sweets though. I think in total there were 4 or 5 brands tested.

I used to be a MH guy until my kids got me a book called "lipsmackin backpackin" I know it sounds stupid (insert joke here), but honestly, I have not bought a MH, BP, or any other store sold meal since. The book is nothing but recipes ranging from easy to complex, breakfast to dinner, that you put together at home, and then enjoy on the trail. I am by no means a chef, or want to deal with difficult meals out on the trail, so I stick to the easy/moderate recipes. I cannot speak highly enough about this book. I would bet it has saved me over $500 in buying the MH meals so far, and the recipes are good for you too. Each recipe includes all of the nutritional info, etc..I would highly recommend trying it as it is so easy to do. Just my opinion.
