I think just about every review or opinion I ever read on the NL's places them at or near the top of the heap. The FOV is what jumps out at you. I have used, but not compared them to other optics. You get what you pay for in this business. The color bias may favor hunters more than birders.
Alot of good advice here and many options in the 1K range. I would go with either used SLC or refurbished Vortex UHD in this same price range. The UHD's receive alot of criticism here, but they are optically among the finest in the world IMHO. I am a used optics dealer and compare alot of...
For big game hunting out to 400 yards, I am of the opinion dialing is not necessary. I think way too many people are fixated on dialing and tracking. 30mm tubes provide extra adjustment, but I never thought they helped much with light gathering. Maybe I'm too old and not keeping up with...
I have dealt in used optics for years, having owned, sold, and/or used many alpha grade optics. As a dealer/trader, I have the luxury of handling alot of optics and enjoy comparisons in the field. There are alot of good options in your price range, but in my opinion, the Vortex UHD will be...
I have used a Hart rest and conventional rear bag for nearly 30 years with no issues. I never use a bipod for load development. Always check zero with the bipod before taking it to the field.
I occasionally send older binoculars and scopes to off for repair/rebuild. I recall having a discussion with the owner of a prominent repair service many of you would be familiar with. I told him about some binoculars I was considering to send to Zeiss for warranty service. He chuckled and...
I buy and sell used optics. I have sold two pair of the older non HD Razor binoculars. These were open bridge and 1st or 2nd generation. Optically, they are not even close to the modern HD/UHD models. They are also bulky and heavy with a stiff focus wheel. On a positive note, if you have...
The prewar models weren't drilled on the rear bridge and have a bolt handle and safety that aren't typically kind to scope mounting. Gotta love 'em!!!!
I agree the used/refurbished market is the way to go, given a transferable warranty. Hard to go wrong with SLC's or UHD's in the 1K range.
Agreed. I bought my refurbished UHD's for 1K from AA Optics. They were 100% new. No reason to pay more. I have many binoculars and firmly believe the...
For most big game hunting, a 2.5X or 4X scope is adequate. Jack O'Connor said he took more game with a .270 and a 2.5X scope than any other rig. I'm sure most would prefer more magnification, but its really not necessary.
Vortex is the only brand of scope used by at least 15% of the top shooters in the PRS benchrest series since it started in 2012. I think close to half of the top shooters one year actually used Vortex. I have never used their scopes, but the evidence would suggest they are pretty good.
Agreed. A 4X scope will handle any reasonable big game shot and short to medium range varmint. You can shoot as about as good with a 4X as you can with an 8-10X. Jack O'Connor said 90% of all big game hunting required nothing more than a 2.5X scope. Finn Aagaard said essentially the same thing.
The playing field has leveled tremendously in recent years regarding optical quality (Durability and reliablity are another subject). As others have said, it really comes down to personal preference within a particular class of optics. Years ago, I recall spending quite a bit of time comparing...
