FEDEX just dropped off my Muscovy down ZenBivy sleep system for use next month in Colorado and other states later this fall. When I was out scouting two weeks ago, the system I used was ok but being a slide sleeper the mummy bag and pillow containment was frustrating so ordered a ZenBivy system.
Thoughts and comments:
UL 10degree XL Muscovy quilt: I cannot detect any type of odor from the Muscovy quilt but my smelling may be impaired as I had a basal cell carcinoma removed from my nose a week ago and a skin graft yesterday, although I can still smell my Boxer's SBDs!
Lt full wide sheet with 25 degree down, easily fits around the XL Flex Air tapered mattress pad with room to spare.
The XL quilt and sheet together in a 10L ZB stuff sack (without the compression caps/straps) came in at 2.8lb on my electronic luggage scale which is right in line with published weights.
The Large pillow system is nice with the case, bladder and down insert but pushes the total package weight to ~3.4lb. Will use this pillow in base camp/truck camping but for spike camping I will probably use an old Thermarest pillow case with the Outdoor Vitals bladder for 1/3rd the weight and just a fleece or insulation piece to fill the pillow case.
The Flex Air mattress (XL tapered) seems very comfortable on the living room floor and in its stuff sack with all the above (pillow system, sheet, quilt, mattress and stuff sacks - without compression straps) weighed in at 5.1lb. The small stuff sack inflator for the mattress takes a bit but had no trouble getting the pad nice and firm. Some of the online reviews of the mattress complain about the fill caps being hard to remove once inflated but I didn't have much of a problem. A little squeeze/side pressure on the caps and they easily pop off vs just pulling on the tab.
The Zenbivy system is approximately the same weight as my old Marmot Merlin long synthetic mummy bag and 30yr old Z pad and looks to be on a much higher comfort level! Looking forward to putting the system to use this fall / winter.
